Teenage girl killed in shark attack in Australia

A teenage girl has been killed in a shark attack in Australia.

The 16-year-old was pulled from the Swan River in Perth with critical injuries on Saturday, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inspector Paul Robinson said the victim had been with her friends on jet skis and they witnessed the "extremely traumatic incident".

He said "there was possibly a pod of dolphins seen nearby and the young female jumped in the water to swim nearby the dolphins".

The victim's family was not present at the time, the officer added.

The type of shark involved in the attack is not currently known.

Australia's Department of Fisheries said it was unusual for a shark to be so far down the river, which flows through Perth into the Indian Ocean.

It is believed to be the first fatal shark attack in the Swan River since January 1923, when a 13-year-old boy was killed.

My deepest condolences to the parents and family.
As a father, I can't even begin to imagine the pain of their loss.
    RIP.

Jesus Christ, I watched the BBL final on tv yesterday at a stadium that river runs by and it seems like she was fatally attacked in it while that game was being played

As it's something from elsewhere in the world it'd be completely impossible for most American's to know anything about of course, and obviously Google is down right now, but it's a short form of a game played in many places that are outside your own zip code so for all intent and purposes it doesn't exist.

In any case, the 54,000 people in attendance watched their home team win the final but for sure their hearts are heavy today knowing that while they were enjoying a sporting event, a young girl died by shark attack in the river next to the stadium they were all at.

54,000? That's men's sport. I'll look it up. Aussies are usually happy to explain things Strine. Sandgropers might be different.

OK, back to the Swan River tragedy. I guess it was at the entrance to the river as the sharks don't go into fresh water?

^ I'm pretty sure that bull sharks have been found way inland in freshwater rivers and lakes in Queensland.

Wrong, Sharks including Great Whites are known to travel inland into brackish and fresh water rivers to cleanse themselves of lice and other parasites.

So sorry about the young lady, in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Wow. What about crocs? No crocs in the Swan? I'm not an Aussie and I've never been to Perth.

I'd love to visit Perth and watch an Eagles game. I hope Ben Cousins is doing well these days.

    Absolutely.
There is the infamous Matawan river tragedy t in New Jersey of all places where:
"In July, 1916, the Jersey Shore was the scene of a series of shark attacks resulting in several deaths and injuries. Among them were 12 year old Lester Stillwell and 24 year old Stanley Fisher who were attacked by a shark in a narrow freshwater creek in Matawan, New Jersey. "
Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 - Wikipedia

But it does not make this one any easier.Aside from the horrendous last moments of this girls life. I imagine the shock of the parents being informed of their pride and joy daughter being dead. Something that they will have to live with for the rest of their lives.
It makes the hair on my arms stand up.

Stupid fucking Yank goes looking for a bite in a thread about the tragic death of a young girl, stupid fucking Yank gets one regardless of the thread title.

But yeah, Bull sharks are commonly found many miles upstream from where river mouths meet the ocean in Australia. Locals are aware of that, non locals can find the same information on this new thing called Google.

I think you mean me? I'm not American. I respect Americans. I think the US is the most important country on the planet. Buddha bless the Americans and Sandgropers. Please put in more links on this story as they appear. It's interesting.

Just watching the story on the six o'clock news, she was taken in a popular swimming spot that looks to be right outside blocks of riverfront apartments on the tv footage.

Bull sharks are the worst IMO.Apparently have the highest testosterone levels of all animals. They have to be the nastiest of all sharks. They have a system that regulates their bodies salinity. They are quite at home in brackish water. No other shark can handle it like they do, AFAIK.

I paddle my kayak around that area often, and go fishing too.
There are heaps of fish at the moment - white bait are running, followed by schools of mullet, some mulloway and dolphins - Ive seen quite a few rays in the last couple of weeks.
The attack took place out the front of where my mum lives - I chuck a line in there occasionally. It is adjoining the main harbour - so it could have been anything - white tiger etc - they are saying bull shark which is also likely but they tend to go further up the river.
We often see pods of dolphins around the bridges.

I was fishing yesteday about 1.5kms away until about 2.30pm - the attack occurred at 3.30pm. Lots of boats and fish schooling on the rising tide.

Currently no-one is 100% confirming a shark attack - there was a suggestion that it could have been a prop - lots of boats go under the bridge.

Anyway - poor girl and her family.

There was also a part ray washed up a couple of days ago - with pretty big bites! The ray was about 1m across.
I'll certainly keep my eyes open a bit more in teh next few days - but as they say about sharks - its the ones you don't see that get you.

As has been said already, most likely to be a Bull Shark. Well adapted to surviving in fresh water and very aggressive.

This one wasn't coming to say a friendly hello to the diver:

    As the article says:

Lets hope it's just an outlier and not a trend of sharks venturing upstream to find food because the fucking chinkies have mopped it all up at sea.
