Auckland floods: New Zealand city declares emergency after torrential rain

Auckland floods: New Zealand city declares emergency after torrential rain-fndp6-0aaaekzb_-jpeg

New Zealand's largest city has declared a state of emergency after torrential rain prompted widespread flooding and evacuations.

Friday's downpour in Auckland shifted houses, stalled traffic and cut power to homes and businesses.

The city is said to have received 75% of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours.

"The impacts of the last 24 hours will be felt by many in Auckland for a long time," said the national forecaster.

Auckland's mayor, Wayne Brown, has confirmed media reports that a body had been found in Wairau Valley on Auckland's North Shore. Mr Brown has said he is "deeply saddened" by the news. Police have not confirmed whether the death is linked to the flooding.

He has also said infrastructure and emergency services had been "overwhelmed" by the impacts of the storm. In a statement, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it had been dealing with roughly 1,500 calls for assistance.

The New Zealand Defence Force is helping with evacuations and emergency shelters have been set up across the city.

^Yep, nasty as hell. Took me 20 hours to get home.(After staying at a friends place over night due to road closures ) I live north of Auckland. Must have seen 20 cars on the side of the road this morning with high tide marks close to the windows. 249mm of rain in 24 hours. That's 9.8 inches for you heathens...

So many people left without a place to stay.Houses flooded, cars ruined. Poor c.unts.

Met Service predicts more heavy rainfall in the coming days for the Auckland region with much of the rain falling north of the city.

The Tasman District at the top of the South Island should also brace for heavy rain.

Here in Ōtautahi and for the rest of Canterbury it is overcast, but will remain dry on the plains.

Update as at 11.01 am – Both the domestic and international terminals are open and operating. However, international operations will take some time to normalise. Please only come to the airport if you have a booked ticket and a scheduled flight. There are also additional delays in the system, particularly at international check-in. Please allow plenty of time to get to the terminal. Please note that only Air New Zealand has a ticketing office open at the international terminal. For all other airline ticketing enquiries contact your airline. We appreciate your patience as we get the airport back up to speed again.

Fine, thank you. A lot of water but no flooding here, free re-fill for the pool and empty streets. It was a record rainfall for Auckland since record-keeping began - one has to feel sorry for the people who lost so much.

Pretty hectic. Plenty of rain here but the sand seems to be soaking most of it up.

    NZ Herald has live updates
Cyclone Gabrielle: Live updates on red warnings for Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne; orange for Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and other regions

Gabrielle is just off the northeast NZ coast, creating waves over 11m high in the Bay of Islands. Widespread power outages are affecting households and businesses in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel.
    .
I'm in Sydney, flying to Wellington this morning, that flight not effected but see seven Sydney-Auckland flights cancelled this morning. Guessing my man on the spot, Auckland brother is without power/internet as he had been giving updates, secure from flooding but exposed to high winds on the hill above Mission Bay

MetService warns “we’ve got a full day of this to go still"
At 9.30pm on Monday, MetService warned that New Zealand was still facing another day of feeling the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.
“Cyclone Gabrielle is spreading a broad swathe of rain and wind, with warnings and watches in place all over the country into Tuesday.
“We’ve got a full day of this to go still,” MetService meteorologist Gerad Bellam said. The rain and wind would also spread into the South Island on Tuesday, Bellam warned.
Since the beginning of Sunday, some stations around the country had recorded over 400mm of rain, with the Pinnacles in the Coromandel seeing 424mm and Tolaga Bay recording 412mm.
Gusts of wind of up to 168km/hour had been recorded just North of Auckland on Monday.

MetService has urged Aucklanders to be alert to heavy rain, flooding, and slips hitting the region and for storm surges during tonight’s 2am high-tide in east coast areas. Transport bosses have warned Aucklanders to avoid non-urgent travel and that roads are blocked by flooding, trees and debris.

Taking a break from the cyclone, gales, rain, flooding, for variation this evening, a 6.3 earthquake

Magnitude 6.3 earthquake shakes NZ, felt in both islands

Tens of thousands of New Zealanders have been shaken by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake centred near Wellington tonight - described by some as “massive” and “scary”.

The quake started with a large jolt followed by at least 30 seconds of moderate shaking.

The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office said aftershocks should be expected.

A short time later another earthquake, this one magnitude 4.0, hit 45km southwest of Taumarunui and at a depth of 78km.
    .

When asked how he felt about the quake Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said it was “unprintable”.

“I was looking out the window for a plague of locusts.”

    Cyclone Gabrielle updates
    15 Feb, 2023 09:51 PM

    Four people - including a young child, confirmed dead. Police say they have “grave fears” for at least several others;
    At least 10,500 people displaced from homes, including 9000 in Hawke’s Bay with 3000 sheltering in Civil Defence centres;
    144,000 properties remain without power
Police said today that 1442 people had been listed as uncontactable - while they expect this list to drop dramatically, there are fears for some missing people in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne.
Community fears are growing of multiple deaths in one of the areas hardest hit by Cyclone Gabrielle, with coastal residents of Napier’s Bay View claiming they saw several bodies washed away by raging flood waters.
As Cyclone Gabrielle hammered the area, rescue helicopters were initially grounded due to dangerous flying conditions. But when the winds died down, many rescue flights took off, saving people from roofs and other areas where they had managed to find life-saving sanctuary.
Cyclone Gabrielle, now located well to the east of the North Island, is expected to continue moving away to the southeast of New Zealand. However, an associated front brings rain with heavy falls to parts of central New Zealand through until late Thursday morning, and Orange Warnings and Watches remain in place for some regions

Two navy ships are headed towards cut-off communities in Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti as the Defence Force responds to a disaster that its commander has compared to Christchurch Earthquake.
