Benedict Cumberbatch could be forced to pay reparations due to slave-owning ancestors

There’s been a renewed push to force Benedict Cumberbatch to pay reparations due to his slave-owning ancestors in Barbados.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch faces a compensation claim over his slave-owning ancestors.

His family once ran a plantation with 250 slaves on Barbados, which now wants reparations.
The Doctor Strange star’s seventh great grandad, Abraham, bought the land in 1728 — and made a fortune from it over the next 100 years.
But David Denny, who leads the fight for compensation, said: “Any descendants of white plantation owners who’ve benefited from the slave trade should be asked to pay reparations, including the Cumberbatch family.
“The money should be used to turn the local clinic into a hospital, support local schools, and improve infrastructure and housing.”

Cumberbatch’s ancestors were said to have been paid $11,000 compensation, the equivalent today of $6.4 million, when slavery was abolished in the 1830s.
He previously admitted his mother had encouraged him not to use his real name as an actor over concerns at the family slavery links.
Cumberbatch played a plantation owner in 12 Years a Slave.

And the 46-year-old was said to have taken the role of William Pitt the Younger in Amazing Grace, a film about Britain ending the slave trade.
He has suggested he took the part by way of apologising for his family’s history.

The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

The largely untold (and unwanted) side of the story of slavery is that the Europeans were not running around Africa capturing people. Quite simply they were enslaved by other Africans. When that side of the story is fully embraced, we might be able to start getting some resolution of the horrors of past history.

My late father's ancestry included generations in Maryland USA, and from this distant ancestry, lines from a will dated 11 August 1745

    I'll await a call from Sambo's descendants

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son William and my son James my two negroes Sambo and Ben.
I also desire that my son William make his choice of them by Christmas after my Death.
I also desire that my son James have a young horse named Spark that I promised him for learning his younger brothers and
sisters to ride and that he comply with his part of the agreement

My donations to the bint in Doha are over due let alone Pat's more recent running out before paying the bill ruse, yep Aliya money and Chinese take away issues moot. Giving it in arrears always seem less satisfactory.

Will Egypt bill the Hebrews for non payment of exit tax , while Noah's parking ticket must be huge. Let alone Pucker Hunters lot.

Possibly, but not necessarily. Collective guilt and historical guilt are issues that are not easy to define nor should they be. Individual vs. Federal . . .

    Pandora's box . . . let's say your grand-parents came to Australia:

    a) bought a house on some land from John Smith
    b) Sold said house and land for a profit and moved to another area where they bought a home to have one of your parents.
    c) Parent went to school and Uni
    d) Parent bought house on the old 1/4 acre after he met your other parent
    e) Parents sold house for profit and had you and your siblings, they went to Uni
    f) You used your uni education to buy house etc etc etc . . .

So, who benefited from First Nations loss of land/wealth/income/education/skills/position? Your grandparents did. Your parents did. You did. Your children do and did.

Ergo sum - you need to pay restitution.

Nah, shouldn't be that way. I agree with

    That isn't grammar, willy.

I'd have thought you'd be steering well clear of this after your 'grammar marks' debacle.

Did you go to school, or were you too busy having fun on the sheep station?

Can only try to make Mr. Craig S List pay for this.

    You never know.
