University of Idaho students stabbed to death in their beds

Well this slipped under the radar.

Nearly a week after four University of Idaho students were found dead in their rental home, a coroner has revealed they were stabbed in their beds.

The three young women and young man were probably sleeping when they were attacked on Sunday 13 November, said Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt.

They were stabbed multiple times with a "pretty large knife", she added.

No arrests have been made and police in the college town of Moscow have warned the killer may still pose a threat.

More than 25 investigators are working on the investigation with assistance from the FBI and Idaho State Police.

The female victims were named as roommates Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho; and Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho.

It's a strange one. Have they arrested anyone yet? Any known motive?

It seems not, and the families and of course other students are getting anxious.

Someone that can do that can clearly do it again, whether it's a serial is unknown.

Authorities investigating the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students as they slept said Tuesday that detectives have looked extensively into information that one of the victims had a stalker and have not been able to verify it.
Investigators have pursued "hundreds of pieces of information" about the possibility of Kaylee Goncalves having a stalker but haven't been able to "verify or identify" a potential person of interest, the Moscow Police Department said in a news release. Police asked community members to submit any information that could help detectives to the Moscow police tip line.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Moscow Police Captain Roger Lanier said that detectives first heard mention of a possible stalker through "some interviews" conducted in the course of the investigation.
"We have followed up looking at specific timeframes and specific areas of town," Lanier said. "So far, we have not been able to corroborate it, but we're not done looking into that piece of information."
Authorities have said they have no identifiable suspects or weapon more than a week after the Nov. 13 killings shook the Idaho Panhandle town of 25,000 residents.

The 2 surviving roommates did not know they four had been killed when they called 911 around noon when they got up, and reported someone unresponsive . The killer apparently covered up the victims before leaving so the roommates did not see any blood. It is indeed a weird one.

Surprising no arrest made yet with all the digital footprints these days, and Moscow apparently has very few cameras so not much video available.

MOSCOW, Idaho - As investigators skipped Thanksgiving celebrations to continue their search for a suspect in the unsolved slaying of four University of Idaho students, a third unsolved stabbing in the Pacific Northwest has resurfaced with eerie similarities.

Reporters at a news briefing Wednesday asked Moscow police about the possible connection between the students’ slayings and a second unsolved stabbing, which left Travis Juetten dead and seriously injured his wife Jamilyn in Oregon.
Authorities say an intruder attacked the couple in their sleep around 3 a.m. on Aug. 13, 2021.

Travis Juetten, 26, fought back but succumbed to his injuries. His wife, who is 26 now, survived 19 stab wounds.

"We're looking at every avenue, and we have other agencies reaching out to us with other cases, stuff that we are going to follow up on," Moscow Police Chief James Fry said Wednesday. He said his office knew about the case and was looking into it, but no official connection has been drawn between the two cases.

The following morning, the Idaho Tribune reported that a third nearby attack shared similar characteristics.

Sandra Ladd, 71, was found dead in her home in Washougal, Washington, on June 14, 2020, according to Oregon Crime Stoppers. Her death was ruled a homicide after the medical examiner found multiple stab wounds in her torso, Washougal police said at the time.

The two attacks happened 14 months apart but within 70 miles of one another. The locations are roughly a five-hour drive west of Moscow, Idaho.

University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were stabbed to death in their sleep on Nov. 13, 2022 between 3 and 4 a.m. in a rental house just off campus, according to police.

Like the attack on the Juettens, the incident happened between 3 and 4 a.m. on the 13th of the month.

Details about the timing of Ladd’s death were not immediately clear. Her body was discovered at 4:30 p.m. – in her bed, the Oregonian reported at the time.

In all three cases, no suspect has been identified.

Aaron Snell, the communications director for the Idaho State Police, told Fox News Digital Thursday that investigators would be digging into any possible connection between the cases.

"Unequivocally, even without asking anybody, our detectives will be aware of that," he said. "They will look into the possibility that they're linked…anything that would be a remote possibility as a connection will be something that we consider."

He said investigators had "not ruled out any idea or concept" but that it was too early to say definitively whether any of the three cases shared a connection.

State, local and federal investigators spent the Thanksgiving holiday on the job Thursday, digging for clues 11 days after the students were found dead at a grisly crime scene just a few yards off campus.

Two other roommates in the home, who were sleeping on the bottom floor, were not attacked, according to police.

They have been ruled out as suspects, along with several other people who encountered some of the victims the night before their slayings.

Moscow police have said they believe the student slayings were "targeted," but they declined to elaborate.

No murder weapon has been recovered and investigators are asking anyone with surveillance video of the surrounding area to send it in.

They were also looking into reports that Goncalves had a stalker before the attack.

"Kaylee mentioned having a stalker, but detectives have been unable to corroborate the statement," police said in a statement. "Investigators are requesting anyone with information about a potential stalker, or unusual instances, to contact the tip line."

This Morris guy is pulling together a lot of pieces. Pretty interesting that the suspect he names has launched off to Africa. Sounds pretty convenient. His 5 hour trip to his parent's cabin should be fairly easy for the FBI to track as his phone gets handed off from cell site to cell site. Each hand-off requires verification of his phone's unique identifier with a central registry, assuming he had his phone on of course.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murders of four University of Idaho students found stabbed to death in a house.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was detained some 2,500 miles away in Monroe County in northeastern Pennsylvania.

He has now been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, according to prosecutor Bill Thompson.

At a press conference on Friday, police and prosecution revealed that Kohberger had been charged.

They added the search for the murder weapon continues.

Good for the families to get at least some closure on this horrific incident. The suspect is a PhD criminology student at Washington State University only 10 miles across the border from the University of Idaho. Weird how this reminds of the Dexter Series. One video clip of a white Hyundai Elantra at 3:45 AM right after the murders seems to have been one of the only leads, but it panned out.

So what do we know about the man held on suspicion of their deaths?

Kohberger is 28 and a PhD student in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University, a short drive across the state line from the University of Idaho.

He is also a teaching assistant for the university's criminal justice and criminology programme, according to WSU's online directory.

The link above says they got so many leads when they publicised the Elantra, they had to had over to the FBI call centre.

Seems to have been the biggest clue that nailed him.

Well it looks like he'll have plenty of time to finish his thesis.
