Dallas air show crash: Two World War Two planes collide in mid-air

Two vintage World War Two-era planes have collided and crashed at an air show in the US state of Texas.

Footage shows the aircraft striking each other at a low altitude, breaking one of the aircraft in half. A fireball can be seen as it hits the ground.

The planes - one of them a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - were taking part in a commemorative air show near Dallas.

It was not immediately clear how many people were in the two aircraft, or if anyone survived.

I wouldn't think there are many P-63's flying either.

Shocking lack of awareness on the P-63 pilot's part.

Flying isn't like driving a car. Most likely it was the air master running the airshows fault

It gets worse from every angle you see. WTF was that P-63 pilot thinking or was he having a stroke or something?

Always turn after (outside) the one you are following in the formation. In this case, there was another flight out there the P63 driver never saw. RIP to all those lost.

I expect there are others overseas, especially in Europe. The P-63 was turned down by USAF and used by the Russians in WWII.

The B-17 was part of the collection of the Commemorative Air Force, nicknamed “Texas Raiders,” and had been hangered in Conroe, Texas near Houston. It was one of about 45 complete surviving examples of the model, only nine of which were airworthy.

The P-63 was even rarer. Some 14 examples are known to survive, four of which in the United States were airworthy, including one owned by the Commemorative Air Force.

Well the professionals discussing it suggest either/any of:

    - poor display planning
    - deviation from planned formation
    - medical incident

NTSB are on their way. I don't think this will go down as aircraft issues.

    RIP bits of metal.

I love how, when you type about 'what all of (us) are posting', it's never what anyone's posted.

I've heard there were 6 fatalities, 5 in the B-17 and the P-63 pilot.

Lots of aircraft in the sky at the time and looks as though there was an error in the co-ordination of them. The P-63 lost sight of the B=17 completely, which is not good.

RIP the the aircrew that lost their lives...

Basically, air shows are just too fkin dangerous.

This was concluded in the UK a few years ago following yet another tragedy at one.

Not sure how many of these horrendous accidents have to happen for the US to reach the same conclusion.

    lets all stay home then.

never go out, never cross a road, never drive a car or a motorbike, board a ship or a plane and never pick up a sharp knife to slice a fucking onion in case we trip up and stab ourselves.

Not quite the same as standing on top of a car while 2 Red Arrows play chicken 25 metres above your head.

The "medical incident" seems unlikely. Just too many aircraft converging on a small maneuvering area. Sad day for many families, but their loved ones died doing something they loved.
