The loss of life is indeed unfortunate, especially with such old aircraft involved. It does make the motivation of aircrew somewhat questionable.

In 2015 I visited the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre

Browsing the workshop hanagars is quite educational, in terms of the hours spent by ground crew volunteers, just to keep the airframes of historic specimens flight worthy and safe?

The loss of such unique aircraft must be equally devastating.

Certainly the B17 crew did nothing wrong. The AA pilots union chose to name two of them fairly quickly - on Twitter. Possibly something that should have been left to the families' discretion.

The NTSB will hopefully be able to determine if the P63 pilot made a disastrous choice without having received or followed a proper briefing, or someone cleared him to be where he ended up without knowing where the B17 was. Both suggestions are being discussed. Certainly flying like that with all those aircraft around is not the sort of thing you should ever leave to chance.

The whole "choreography" of the display is supposed to be with the Flying Display Director (in the US: "Air Boss") beforehand to allow them to verify its safety and coordinate the aircraft activities. There was supposed to be clear separation between the fighters and the bombers in this display. It's up to the NTSB to sift through evidence and find out why that didn't happen.

(By way of an example, in the Shoreham Air Crash, the Director had not been informed of the pilot's intended display, and may well have vetoed or changed it if he'd known what the pilot intended to do).

I have never met any of them. But I have stood next to a B17 at Vancouver airport

I don't know who the Youtube expert is but we already know what happened and how it happened.

The question is why it happened.

    Para 4, Line 1:

There were no altitude deconflictions briefed before the flight or while the airplanes were in the air.
Might as well have told them to fly at each other. Massive lawsuit inbound.
