I tried registering a Mastodon account because some of the groups I'm on moved to it, but I'm fucked if I can get the confirmation email. Must be a bit swamped.

Twitter Inc's new owner Elon Musk on Thursday raised the possibility of the social media platform going bankrupt, capping a chaotic day that included a warning from a U.S. privacy regulator and the exit of the company's trust and safety leader.

The billionaire on his first mass call with employees said that he could not rule out bankruptcy, Bloomberg News reported, two weeks after buying it for $44 billion - a deal that credit experts say has left Twitter's finances in a precarious position.

^hmm. Though I don't like many of FB's policies (it's good that they removed the facial recognition thingy), and I don't post on "my day" or every fancy coffee that I've drunk, I see the benefit of FB to many users.

I know of many people (small business owners) who get orders via FB - baked goods, baby products, clothes, silver jewelry, etc. There are also helpful/ useful groups, like the hiking group that I'm a member of. The hike organizers (many of them are registered w/ the Dept of Trade & Industry) post their events there & anyone can join (even solo joiners) as long as they can pay & abide by the rules. There's also FB marketplace where ppl buy & sell stuff. Some ppl also post listings of apartments & condos.

It would be quite a feat to buy a company for 44Bn and bankrupt it within weeks.

I am aware of the potential benefits that you allude to. A number of these clubs and sale sites are coming outside PI on similar lines.

FB under the direction of the owner, and in common with other platforms, also buy up smaller start ups, to expand their influence.

Such uncontrolled influences, often avoid scrutiny in less regulated countries, and the influences exerted over unscrupulous media, is often the cause of fake news. People like the founder and owner of FB, weild far too much unregulated influence.
I don’t think the owners care, provided they agree with such dangerous influence, and it continues to make money!
A great deal of this unregulated influence is often not noticed until it’s too late to do anything about it. Your hiking group, and my trade association become innocent bystanders, complicit by association.
    Unhealthy I think.

Twitter Suddenly Lays Off Thousands of Contract Workers Without Notice

Twitter reportedly laid off the majority of its contract employees on Sunday, offering no advance notice for some 4,400 staff. The cull affected workers on the site’s content moderation and core infrastructure departments—and, according to one manager who spoke with Platformer, the platform’s “child safety workflows.” According to sources who spoke with the outlet, employees only realized they had been shortchanged when they were unable to login to their emails or company Slack channels. “Regarding Twitter’s reduction in force, unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day,” Musk tweeted on Nov. 4. “Everyone exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50% more than legally required.” Musk reportedly shared with staff that filing for bankruptcy is not out of the question, as advertisers flee the site over political and corporate impersonation scandals.

    I agree,
I belong to several groups which have been very helpful with in their particular scope. I recently needed some Malay grass for a repair where I removed a tree, and could not find any at the places were I looked. I posted at our local Khon Kaen group and with in 15 min I had a message from someone who had seen some. Same with ordering , I often order specialty farang food items. My family is spread around the world , FB helps us communicate and keep touch with each other.
Twitter on the other hand is useless for me, if I want my opinion ignored by a bunch of....., I post on TD.

I used to enjoy following a watch collecting group on Facebook. Unfortunately it got overran by boofheads who were more interested in showing off their assault rifle collection, tactical gear kit, and other stupid crap.

So many close friends as well. Today is the 49er game, actually starts in 5 minutes. A group of us are hooked up on Messenger. Acapulco Mexico, Majorca Spain, London, San Francisco, Calistoga Ca, and Santa Fe New Mexico will be chatting. None post much of FB but do keep in touch with Messenger.

My cousin does not determine my psychology . . . in other words, FB's ownership/parentage doesn't affect how I interact with people of MY choice. As in:

I have 43 friends on my FB account. These range from elementary school friends to relatively 'new' friends and of course family. FB provides a great way to connect on a casual basis with photos, quips etc... that I decide I want to use, NOT Zuckerberg.

The rest is done by WhatsApp or Signal.

These 43 are my real friends . . . not 'social media 'friends'.

Twitter a clusterfuck of self-inflicted wounds and Tesla increasingly in shite after sell-offs & losing its early market leader advantage...

Can we call time on the myth of Musk as a genius yet and just recognize that he's a fuckwit who was born into wealth and got incredibly lucky?

There are some very narrow and selfish minds on here. Your convenient ‘friendships’ are just the kind of groundbait used by FB. You enjoy the innocent and idle chatter, while FB mines, and sells information for profit.
Whatsapp is a wholly owned subsidiary of FB.

Surprised Eddie hasn’t got shares in it. lol
