    look at his personal life
I would have before Musk. But after,… I’ll pass.

At the start of the video is a book that is (now) covered. It was/is The Art of War. One of Musk’s former spouses.

I actually like Grimes tbh. It is his desire to spread his seed around like he is saving the planet that disturbs me.

Big difference, but both you and JP/Stumps are way behind the times.

This has been discussed numerous times in the past and yes TD is a social media type site so you are correct.

I do not deny I am an old bloke, the alternative to not getting old was very unattractive, and I know nothing about "social media" and really can't get my head around the whole concept of someone being an "influencer". I suppose it works because there are a lot of dumb people out there.
Maybe someone, cue bsnub, can explain to me exactly what it is that '"defines or differentiates" a social media site to qualify as such?
If it is that there needs to be people posting stupid idiotic crap onto the internet for other dumb fukkers to see and be influenced by, then I would have thought TD is over qualified.

As for Elon I thought him changing his name to "Chief Twit" was self defining.

May I suggest a deconstruction of consumption in consumer societies, of spectacle and ennui the grate.

How do they sell us all these extras beyond food and shelter?
I look around my room full of objects.
Some I like. some don't use often, a few pieces of art sculpture made r were gifts
Some I use daily books phone, coffee machine others rarely non digital but loathe tu bin storage, CDs books, pens, gadgets old laptops, USBs , leads , cameras etc

I try to consume very little but so many items either break built in obsolescence or need upgrade like Phones that wont run 3 year old apps or Laptops that need upgrading to maintain security .

Such discretionary spending unless a gift is due to awareness/stimulation via ads or other means

Once upon you saw a watch / car/ bike you like in real life or in a film/ad or a shop, a friends house, cafe, on the links etc

Today a surfeit of cheap junk with short shelf life or even single use is common be it clothes throw away cups , chop sticks etc

Vendors once used Billboards, radio TV, the sides of buses ,When I was a student I spent a whole summer as a sandwich man walking up and down Oxford Street the main consumer drag advertising Nev's reusable condoms on one side and the rear "REPENT THE END IS REAR"

To get your attention today some barely clad 18 year old Bimbo does some stunt or walks her dog , shaves her pussy or shows her acrobatic gerbil on TikTok
Millions of Morons click possibly billions a week
Of those a fraction but could be millions will click through to the ad and convert to real sales in the real world, or download some game or ad or other means to join the prospect list for products , services, crypto, crapto and downright scams.

Take a peek at TikTok to see how low the bar is set, makes Teak Door secret room with Edmundo's live golden stream and Helge's Danish Patsies seem like book of the month club.

It's all about greed fantasy, people used to do anything to get on TV , even gurning behind street reporters with cheapo tel apps anyone can be a poser and some will have their 15 m of fame just as Warhol, McCluhan and Bowie suggested

I find the final solution is to be Under the Influencer ,not too much moral turditupe?

    'Myth' is probably more appropriate.

It would be a long-winded response. Each of those social media sites are quite different from each other. Web forums predated social media and have largely been left behind as a social outlet. This forum is a rare bird, as most forums are defunct or ghost towns. Today, most surviving forums are used by hobbyists and car enthusiasts.

    social media

    Learn to pronounce
    noun

    • websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

What is defined as social media?

What is Social Media? Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

What is the main purpose of social media?

Social media allows individuals to keep in touch with friends and extended family. Some people will use various social media applications to network and find career opportunities, connect with people across the globe with like-minded interests, and share their own thoughts, feelings, and insights online.

No need for long winded explanations. I think that after reading the above which come from Google of course, Teakdoor qualifies as "Social Media".

It is easy for you to make disparaging remarks about us old guys not being "up" with the latest trends but not everyone likes the shit that is "Socia 'Media" nowadays.

In my mind its just the same as a 1930's ford coupe versus a Tesla, they are both cars and some people like one or the other.

So Teakdoor IS social media just not as successful as Instagram.

Bloody hell that didn't come out very well. I think I need to learn how to cut and paste.

Bsnub likes to insult older people for just about anything. For some reason it hasn’t occurred to him that he is getting old fast. Soon he will be on the receiving end of ‘Pops’ and ‘geezer.’

BTW, I often refer to my contemporaries as well as myself as codgers or whatever just because it’s fun.

It is ootai. As Snubs commented, forums are dying and are becoming more of a means to communicate on a very focused subject or hobby, such as cars or fishing where the audience is looking for help or share specific ideas. Most are very much value add IMHO. I enjoy these sites because I am looking for something specific and it works and it's that type of "Social Media" I like and will continue to use.

As for the sites like FB, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn, Mastodon and Truth Social I will never sign up.
I do not trust their security systems, hackers focus on taking your information and in general people are just really weird on them and moreover they have mass audiences where people who appear to have limited abilities to filter information, believe everything people post. People live nowadays to get "Likes", "Followers" and "Subscribers". It some how validates them.

So while I say I hate "Social Media", the fact is I do use it but in a very very specific manner. TD is enjoyable due to its smaller audience and connecting with other expats living here or in neighboring SEAsia countries. I laugh a lot on this site when reading posts by numerous posters.

As one of the relatively younger members of this forum, I use social media but to a lesser degree. I have FB but I'm inactive there & don't post nowadays. I don't use Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, Snapchat, etc though I have many friends & acquaintances who do. Due to my work & hiking activities, I know a lot of millenials and Gen Z and it's sometimes nice to know the ins & outs of the younger crowd & how they think.

As for influencers, I guess they serve a purpose for those who are gullible to believe them. The thought if Kendall Jenner being paid $250k for just 1 Instagram post about the failed Fyre Festival is bonkers, or her sister Kim Kardashian paid similarly to promote a certain crypto platform. If you don't know who they are, Google them (or not).

As for TD and other forums, they're of a much limited audience and scope, but they serve a purpise. I continue to use TD since I'm entertained by it (and have had several larfs). I've also learned a lot from it (travel threads, news, etc). It's also fun (sometimes) to read/ watch the bickering of the old "geezers". Cheers.

Musk Bans ‘Impersonation’ After Parody Elons Flood Twitter

After vowing to make Twitter a bastion of “free speech”—and declaring just over a week ago that “comedy is now legal on Twitter”—Elon Musk announced a new policy on Sunday that will remove accounts engaging in the type of “impersonation” that comedians and others have using a way to humorously protest his takeover of the social network in recent days. “Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying ‘parody’ will be permanently suspended,” Musk, who has previously said he opposed permanent bans, including the one imposed on Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection, tweeted Sunday evening. He added that while users previously received a warning before suspension, moving forward “there will be no warning.” Celebrities such as comedian Kathy Griffin and Mad Men star Rich Sommer have already have their accounts removed for changing their usernames and photos to match Musk’s.

Meta to Begin Laying Off Thousands of Employees This Week: WSJ

Meta is expected to begin a round of mass layoffs this week that will affect thousands of staffers, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited sources familiar with the matter. A planned announcement may be made as soon as Wednesday, the newspaper reported. Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, employed more than 87,000 people at the end of September. The 18-year-old company has already told employees to cancel non-essential travel from this week onward, sources told the Journal. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment to the newspaper, pointing instead to Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks last month on the a third-quarter earnings call, with the founder and chief executive noting plans to “focus our investments on a small number of high priority growth areas.” He continued: “That means some teams will grow meaningfully, but most other teams will stay flat or shrink over the next year. In aggregate, we expect to end 2023 as either roughly the same size, or even a slightly smaller organization than we are today.”
