Dozens in cardiac arrest in Itaewon amid Halloween celebrations

More than 50 people were in cardiac arrest after being crushed in a large crowd in Itaewon, Yongsan-gu, central Seoul, during Halloween festivities on Saturday evening, according to multiple news reports and sources. No deaths were reported as of 1:20 a.m.

Authorities say the number of people injured could reach up to 100, many of whom are reportedly women in their 20s.

At around 11:30 p.m., rescue workers were conducting CPR on dozens of people that went unconscious near the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon, reports said. Initial reports said there were around 50 patients experiencing cardiac arrest at the scene.

Fire authorities said they had received 81 reports of people experiencing breathing difficulties, as of 11:30 p.m.

Around 100,000 people were in the entertainment district throughout the day on Saturday to celebrate the first Halloween weekend without mask and social distancing measures since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following reports of the incident, President Yoon Suk-yeol said, "All related ministries and agencies, led by the minister of public administration and security, should make every effort to promptly provide aid to the victims," according to Lee Jae-myung, a deputy presidential office spokesperson.

The president also called for safety measures to deal with emergencies that could be triggered at Halloween events taking place throughout the country. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has also decided to return immediately from his business trip in Europe, according to reports.

Officials: 9 dead after Halloween crowd surge in Seoul

At least nine people were killed and dozens more were injured after being crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in the capital Seoul, South Korean officials said.

Choi Cheon-sik, an official from the National Fire Agency, said at least 60 more people were being treated for injuries and that the death toll could grow. Officials say it was believed that people were crushed to death after a large crowd began pushing forward in a narrow alley near Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in Seoul.

    Origin of Halloween.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.

This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

This pagan freakshow called Halloween seems to get more popular every year with adults

At Least 120 Dead After Halloween Crowd Surge in Seoul

At least 120 people were killed and 100 more were injured as they were crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in the capital of Seoul, South Korean officials said.

Choi Seong-beom, chief of Seoul’s Yongsan fire department, said the death toll could rise and that an unspecified number among the injured were in critical conditions following the stampede in the leisure district of Itaewon Saturday night.

He said 74 of the dead have been sent to hospitals while the bodies of the remaining 46 who had been kept on the streets were being transported to a nearby gym so that workers could identify them.

Officials say people were crushed to death after a large crowd began pushing forward in a narrow alley near Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in Seoul.

More than 800 emergency workers and police officers from around the nation, including all available personnel in Seoul, were deployed to the streets to treat the injured.

The National Fire Agency separately said in a statement that officials were still trying to determine the exact number of emergency patients.

At least 146 people are now reported to have been killed during an incident at Halloween festivities in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood Saturday night, according to Choi Seong-bum, chief of the Yongsan-gu Fire Department.

At least 150 others were also reported injured, the chief added.

The cause of the deaths has not been confirmed, but the fire chief said many people fell during the Halloween festivities, resulting in casualties. The chief said they received reports of people “buried” in crowds starting around 10:24 p.m. local time Saturday night.

Celts certainly lived in N Spain where I have visited their typical dolmens and at Barnenez near Carantac in Brittany with 2500 pyramid platform earth works , well worth a detour if visiting Roscoff or Morlaix.

I've spent many a night in that district and many an early morning at the basement of the Hamilton hotel having American breakfast.

    Tragic. RIP to the victims.

In the nightclub district. The first Halloween in 2 years without covid restrictions.

It doesn't sound like it was a crowd surge. People were slowly trampled to death as the street got narrower. Still a bit strange that 150+ ppl die from this

I used to live 3 stops from Itaewon and was wondering just how so many people had died, but the streets are really narrow once you get off the main road and head towards the bars. So, if you've got a surge down one of those streets to a particular bar then it will become a bottleneck which would be amplified as some of those streets are quite hilly (Seoul as a whole is like that).

Therefore, you'll obviously have people falling on top of one another and crushing each other with potentially even more coming from the back adding to the pressure (these people won't be able to see what's happening either if they are running from the street at the top which doesn't have a clear view of the alley leading through to the main road). The reason they were rushing down this alley, according to reports, is because a local celebrity had been spotted in one of the bars there.

We can probably discount the Malthusian Weimar Ukrainian NATO Nazis, backspin.

    You'll set him off again.
Itaewon is an older 'suburb', yup - many tiny streets. It can certainly happen.

Reports said that an 'unknown' celebrity was supposedly in a club there and word got around - wouldn't surprise me.

Someone made a good point in the YT comments. When the crowd starts pushing , you will be stepping on anyone that falls down. But you have no choice. At that point you are just trying to stay standing yourself. You have to move with the crowd to stay standing. If you go down to help someone or anything like that, you will just be another victim

I do find 'cardiac arrest' is an interesting choice for cause of death. I'm sure they didn't all die from heart attacks?

    That's true.
I was at the Simon & Garfunkel Central Park concert, in NYC. 1991., where it was estimated that more than half a million people attended. Arriving happened incrementally as people drifted in earlier , But when the concert ended everyone got up and left at the same time.
It was scarry, once I got into the crowd I had no choice where I was going, and I am sure if I fell down I would have been trampled since the people behind me also had no choice.
I would never make the same mistake, If I was ever in a similar situation I would wait a few minutes and allow the majority of the crowd to disperse.
149 people dead. What a tragedy.

Very sad indeed and as Buckaroo said I have had a scary experience leaving a Metallica concert, never again, I either leave early or late from these things now.

RIP to all those who perished.

    Death toll rises to 153.

He added that most of the dead and injured are women in their 20s and many of them were killed near a nightclub.

Was this the celeb they were rumoured to be thronging to see?

South Korean singer Lee Jihan has passed away on October 29th in a crowd surge incident that happened in Itaewon Seoul during Halloween celebrations.
The deadly incident took place on Saturday, when a large number of people thronged a narrow street during Halloween celebrations, leaving almost 153 dead and more than 133 people injured, Billboard reported.

So I posted the above in reply to a comment made by Backspin about not having much choice in cases of crowd surge, and in agreement I posted a similarly experience I once had at a concert.
I was surprised when I got a Red and a comment calling me a "Tool" from the doctor in this forum. And I am perplexed how my what I thought was a innocuous comment would elicit such response from a respected member of the medical community?
Your guess is as good as mine but I suspect that alcohol and or other stimulants were involved.
    What do you think?
