Ford with $1.7B verdict over deadly 2014 crash

To our US friends on here, can you kind of explain the process/outcomes to me please?

Essentially, as I understand it ...

    • A 2014 Ford F250 is involved in a roll-over crash
    • The roof gets crushed (as it would in many cars) in the roll over
    • The wrong size tyers were fitted by a 3rd party
    • The driver and passenger (married) were killed
    • Their children (who were not in the car from what I understand) sued Ford for having a 'weak roof'
    • Ford sold 5.2 million “Super Duty” trucks with weak roofs that would crush people inside during rollovers, the jury determined ... WTF, jury members are now Auto safety experts?
    • A Georgia jury has hit Ford Motor Co. with the biggest monetary verdict in state history — $1.7 billion — $1,700 million dollars ... WTF
    • The state (Georgia) will receive three-quarters of the punitive damages under Georgia law for product liability cases

No, they would have made that determination after listening to the testimony of safety experts.

    You know...like juries do?

Yeah, maybe the jury listened to, you know, evidence.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs had submitted evidence of nearly 80 similar rollover wrecks that involved truck roofs being crushed that injured or killed motorists, Butler’s law firm, Butler Prather LLP, said in a statement.

^ ^^ ... I understand, but remember that this is the "Butler’s law firm, Butler Prather LLP, said in a statement."

It's the Plaintiff's Lawyer saying this, not the safety authority in the USA saying this.

I believe commercial vehicles are excluded from crash test requirements.

Have you got a link for that?

I tried looking for the 'safety rating' of the vehicle, but got nothing relevant.

My focus also was the substantive amount of the compensation (over 1 BILLION dollars) and why the State was entitled to 3/4 of that?

It's called PUNITIVE damages. A couple of bucks wouldn't mean anything to a company that size.

As for Georgia laws, ask the Georgia politicians who passed them. Seems pretty smart of them to me. That will pay for some new electric fences to keep all those black voters away from polling stations.

It actually equates to 10% of it's estimated 2022 profit.

Ford Motor shares sank 5.4% after a jury on Friday ruled against the automaker in a case focused on the roof strength in one of its older pickup trucks.

A Georgia jury last week ordered the company to pay $1.7 billion to the family of two people killed in a 2014 accident involving the rollover of an F-250 pickup truck.

    Good.

Mind you they've appealed and it will now be stuck in the courts for a few years and probably reduced.
