Salt then vinegar then salt then vinegar. On the side, one of those giant pickled onions. Assuming you're not on a date.

You put the vinegar on when you get home so the fish and chips doesn't cool down.

As for pickled onions as an accompaniment , that is just plain wrong!

Those big ones, I only ever saw them in the chippies.

My daughter always liked pickled eggs with hers. I could never get into that.

I am neutral on gherkins. Okay, but I prefer the big onions.

The big question is what to have with ones fish and chips???
Slice of lemon, mushy peas , tartar sauce or all three?
nah, just a couple of slices of buttered hovis and a mug of tea.

Salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for me, plus some tartare sauce on the side. Yum.

Here's the best F&C shop I've ever been in, and I've been to many of them in Oz and all over England to get an order of takeaway fish and chips (sometimes even twice) . Charis seafood on the Gold Coast of Australia shits all over them though but we're talking fresh reef fish versus cod or haddock, anyone who's ever eaten fish like coral trout knows what I mean.

Thousands of Britain's 'fish and chip' shops could close within a year. Here's why-20220519_154259-jpg
They've got everything from the sea though like crabs, oysters, prawns, lobster, scallops, and so on.

At the back of the shop which is right on the beach, they feed the frames of whole fish they buy and fillet to the local Pelican population each day and it's become a tourist attraction.

But here's the way to buy fish, depending on the season they'll have fillets of locally caught (or sourced from the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef or cold waters of Tasmania) snapper, mahi mahi, red emperor, barramundi, flathead, whiting, salmon, coral trout, bream, tuna, shark, cobia, and more. So you select which fillets you want and they'll batter, grill, or pan fry them in bread crumbs for you.

That sounds much too posh for the cold waters of fresh North Sea cod. Sorry, but when it was cooked in hot fat, (beef dripping) not the modern vegetable oil, but still wrapped in sterile newsprint, it was one of the very finest working class meals a man could afford to feed his family with.

There used to be a chippy on every street corner when I was a student in Leeds Yorkshire.

Great place to pick up a bed warmer after the pub's kicked out. The odd boyfriend being overprotective of his patch excluded.

Competition ensured a tasty "supper" and a hot "breakfast" in the morning. If lucky, a home cooked Sunday lunch appeared.

Not required. Plenty of lasses around some time ago. Life was free and easy.

You obviously lived a different life to me, if you depended on illegal drugs to sustain a relationship.

Let me get this right. You pick up a girl at a fish and chip shop and after swapping bodily fluids she will cook you breakfast and make Sunday lunch.

Are you dreaming? Slappers hanging around chippies after the pubs close are not known for their culinary skills otherwise they would not have been there in the first place buying pov food.

These days that's the clarsey end of town mate- the real slappers hang around kebab shops.

Charis seafood on the Gold Coast
Nice looking shop, but heard some awful reviews of it. I reckon it's hard to beat a right proper brit chippery, worth going out of your way for.

As a kid growing up in Canada, off the family went to our local shop every Saturday evening for a proper fish n chips treat. Sprinkled with malt vinegar and salt to finish it off.

Some shops had their front door recessed. It provided a little privacy. Luckily, the No. 17 bus stop was pretty close.

Harry Ramsden's was a lunch choice if north of Leeds.

^ Yep, too busy worrying about fukking vegans

There are about 6 chippies in a one mile radius of me. Only 2 of them are any good and have huge queues on Fridays. We'll their fish is good, not so much the chips.

I don't know how the other 4 stay in business although one doesn't accept cards, only cash so they are more than likely just there to wash money.
