While there is some historical evidence to support Sabang’s theory that population changes are caused by the Chinese singular and draconian approach to Covid-19, the other side of the coin is slightly different.
Multinationals are finding it harder to operate under Chinese mainland rules and they have already moved senior managers out of Hong Kong. Simple expediency and difficulty in filling executive positions has caused some companies to consider a move for major headquarters.
I am sure this ‘brain drain’ is welcomed by mainland China because it will mean weaker opposition to their business methodology, and more malleable proles left behind to follow the mainland ethos willingly.
Big business, especially in the finance and service sector was happy with the SFA status to protect their operations. That has now been undermined by Mainland Covid-19 management, and increasing interference in business practices.
The latent hesitancy by multinationals has also been dented by China undermining the SFA and little or no sensible opportunity for relocation and further growth.
Singapore, where 80% of western HK businesses would prefer to move, will have similar population limitations to HK. HK is already close to physical capacity for new growth, and Singapore would seem to have similar future limitations.
Notwithstanding these limitations it remains a fact that HK continues to lose middle and senior management staff to ever more distant locations. Some of that is Covid related and some is tied to business reasons. Maybe it is intentional, stemming from mainland aspirations, maybe not, but big business is seeing the writing on the wall. Honk Kong seems ever more likely to be subsumed by Mainland China in the next decade or so, special status or not.
Most management and senior management currently in HK were around during the Brit days and have been trying to get out after it was clear that China was not going to stick to the 2-systems approach.
Fuck China and their apologists
