Britain sends troops to Poland border as migrant crisis worsens

The troops will ‘provide engineering support’, says the Ministry of Defence

    Borzou DaragahiInternational Correspondent

"Britain has sent troops to Poland to help secure the Nato ally’s border with Belarus, as a migrant crisis that threatens to draw in major regional and international powers deepened and thousands of people remained stranded on the eastern European frontier in freezing conditions.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD said on Friday that it had deployed a “small team of armed forces” to Poland “to address the ongoing situation at the Belarus border”.

“The UK and Poland have a long history of friendship and are Nato allies,” said the MoD. “A small team of UK armed forces personnel have deployed following an agreement with the Polish government to explore how we can provide engineering support to address the ongoing situation at the Belarus border.”

One hopes they are not "attacked", from across the border.

    Article 5

"The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security"

    WARSAW, Nov 13 (Reuters) -

"A Polish soldier serving on the Belarus border died in an accidental shooting involving a Polish weapon, the spokesman for Poland's security services said on Saturday.

"According to preliminary findings, there was a shot from a military service gun, as a result of which the soldier died, and no third parties were involved in the event," a statement written by the commander of the soldier's unit posted on Twitter by spokesman Stanislaw Zaryn said."

Hungary breached law with asylum seekers policy – EU top court

    16 Nov, 2021 09:45 / Updated 32 minutes ago

"The European Union’s top court has ruled that Hungary’s 2018 law aimed at criminalizing aiding illegal immigrants who are claiming asylum violates the “rights safeguarded” by the bloc’s legislature.

The Hungarian legislation, passed in 2018, sought to punish anyone “facilitating illegal immigration” with a year in prison, under a bill dubbed the “Stop Soros” law. Hungary’s government justified it at the time by arguing that migrants illegally entering the country threatened its national security.

In the ruling, handed down on Tuesday, the European Court of Justice declared that “criminalizing such activities impinges on the exercise of the rights safeguarded by the EU legislature in respect of the assistance of applicants for international protection.”

The EU’s advocate general, Athanasios Rantos, had urged the court to make such a judgement back in February, claiming the introduction of the legislation meant that “Hungary has failed to fulfil its obligations under the [bloc’s] Procedures Directive.”

Similar in the EU country, Poland ?

At Europe's borders, migrants and refugees are denied their basic human rights

"Rather than being places of safety, those countries have failed to offer protection to many new arrivals. A new NGO report reveals that migrants and refugees in Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria are being routinely mistreated by law enforcement officials. Violence and intimidation are used to illegally push them back and deny them access to asylum procedures, even though such actions are strictly prohibited under international human rights law.

We have collected testimonies alleging systematic abuses and brutal treatment at the hands of police, border guards and other officials, including accounts of people being stripped of their clothes in freezing temperatures and having cold water poured over them, attacks by dogs, beatings and robbery."

Belarus’ Lukashenko discusses border crisis with Germany’s Merkel – reports

    15 Nov, 2021 18:32 / Updated 15 hours ago

"Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko and outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel have discussed the refugee crisis on the Belarus-Poland border, on Monday evening, according to a Telegram channel linked to officials in Minsk. The conversation was focused on the ongoing situation on the border between Belarus and two EU nations: Poland and Lithuania. The two leaders spoke for nearly an hour about ways to prevent potential escalation at the border, "First Pool," which is believed to be close to the Belarusian leader’s press service, reported.

It marks the first known direct exchange between Lukashenko and a major Western political figure since summer 2020's disputed presidential election in Belarus. Since then, the West's elites have preferred to deal with exiled opposition figure Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who claims she was the rightful winner of the contest.

Lukashenko and Merkel discussed how to resolve the crisis that has seen thousands of refugees, mostly from the Middle East, camping out at the Belarusian border and occasionally seeking to make their way into EU territory. Warsaw has sent additional troops to “defend” the border and requested assistance from NATO and the EU while blaming Minsk for the crisis it called part of Belarus' “hybrid war.”

Lukashenko has repeatedly denied the accusations, arguing that his government is simply no longer capable of shielding the EU from the influx of migrants due to heavy sanctions the bloc imposed on the country.

However, Warsaw claims that Belarus has laid on flights from troubled destinations like Iraq and Iran and is shuttling them to the border as a form of “hybrid warfare.” Poland also insists that Belarusian security forces are helping groups of migrants to make the crossing, and refusing to allow them to turn back.

Since the beginning of 2021, more than 23,000 people have tried to cross the Polish- Belarusian border, causing Warsaw to declare a state of emergency and boost its troop presence, as well as approving the construction of a fortified wall.
However, the UN’s refugee rights watchdog has said the country is not doing enough to offer safety to those fleeing war and unrest, with several people understood to have died while sleeping rough close to the border."

A blatant lie by your propaganda masters, and it is clearly proven so in this post...

The NYT traveled to the source of the migration and exposed it for what it is. 100% manufactured by Lukashenko and his goons. Only a brainwashed moron would see it otherwise.

Its awfully convenient for this "border crisis" to heat up just as Germany is trying to commission the NS2 pipeline. What a joke.

I believe this is 100% manufactured by the US to try and stop NS2 yet again. Its so obvious. At every stage of this pipeline, there is a crisis just at the worst time for those who want it. Germany and Russia

And what is most disruptive to energy supplies I wonder- building a pipeline, or bombing the shit out of oilfields & refineries, and the people working in them?
Sure beats me, but uncle sam says he does it to increase our energy security, and ensure a fresh supply of motivated immigrants for his European friends and allies!

Not moronic at all. Perspicacious. It is being ramped up out of all proportion, because geopolitics. Just look at the piddling amount of refos involved compared to southern Europe- but we're not reading much about that in the current news cycle, are we?

I think you should be more concerned about the neofascist tendencies of the current Polish government. Hungary too.

Anyway, Vlad the Omnipotent must have pulled some strings for you and stopped the flights from Iraq & Syria to Belarus. Diddums, better now? You're welcome.
Now all you've got to do is persuade fascist Poland to fulfil it's EU obligations, and accept the refs at the border into resettlement camps. Good luck!
