I predict that the 'issue', to the Australian taxpayer, will be one of spiralling costs. To pose any credible counterthreat to this mythical Chinese invasion, Australia would need a sub base in the N/NE of this rather large country- also to act as a base for 'visiting' US boats. Otherwise, it's a bit like the sub base in San Diego being the depot for subs patrolling the Nth Atlantic.

Furthermore, since the decision was made to eschew nuclear energy & research in the mid 70's, Australia has no qualified nuclear technicians etc at all. Everything, including people, will need to be imported. It's a considerable challenge. Then again, it still makes more sense than proceeding with the baguettes.

I find that fact that China is bankrolling Oz with their insatiable lust for Iron Ore and thus indirectly funding the Sub build deliciously ironic

That's the interconnected world for ya. As a general rule of thumb, countries that share vital mutual trade interests rarely go to war.

It is laughable that you would even think that this is a possibility. China could not even successfully invade Vietnam, its neighbor. The Viets kicked the shit out of your Chinese CCP gods.

That said, the Chinese navy is becoming increasingly belligerent and needs a bloody nose sooner than later.

^^ Of course - the whole situation is posturing really but its the Chinks are the ones that have something to lose They could learn from history on trying to project power - logistics always wins in the end.

^^ When I was in the RAN, the mythical threat from the Indonesians was being played up. The "Yellow Peril". What a joke- over half of their fleet was not even seaworthy, the rest antiquated.
Now it's the "Red Tide". Same old same old- I guess the public has to be sold something to be paranoid about. But for this to be credible as opposed to vacant posturing, we need a new sub base.

Of which the Chinese have next to none. The fact that Sabang throws out that nonsense shows how ignorant and blinkered he is.

No one is questioning that you were a former naval officer, but you have become more and more blinkered and delusional in recent years.

You are distant from your old self here as a mod in SC. To be honest, you were very fair, as was lardy in your moderation. But these days you just come off as a loon and a grovelling CCP apologist.

How am I being a CCP apologist by pointing out that Australia having one sole submarine base in the extreme SW of the country rather compromises it's ability to be fully operational in the waters off the N/ NE of the country?

That history here on TD is well documented by your posting history.

I am sure that your Admirals and brass will have plenty of time to rectify that issue, as it will take several years before the first sub will be even built.

IMO, Sabang does a good job giving another side to the story regarding China's ambitions — which is good for discussion/debate.

Those who wish to shut down viewpoints (international affairs, politics) other than those they hold have more in common with the CCP than they realize.

The reason the Brits and US left France out of the new arrangement is because they didn't like the acronym...

    Beat me to it

Irony is is with Rod of God, drones and the tokamak fusion on the horizon most subs likley be redundant by the time of sea trails 2029-2035 horizon but of course Boris will have hooverd up the basket cases of Barrow and many other so called "Red Wal" rsutbelt places constructed on coalfields who can scrape by building machines to kill foreigners yet cannot stop thousands landing on the beaches of Kent. If only Hitler had used Africans in inflaables instead of Op Sealion.

Of course Slyamese maelots will want a sub hub , gotta hang those medals their provenance cannot be challenged and tow starving Rohinghya out to sea undetected. With a retro fitted launchpad who knows they could launch the Mars mission, or keep out Lobster mobsters and illegal alien Octupussies.?

...a Bloomberg commentator this evening quoted the Global Times as suggesting that Australia is the weak link in the chain and will quickly suffer severe punishment for supporting the US...no hope for Aussie wine, I guess...

    Don't be fucking silly.

The US has just shed itself of a rather large ball and chain and now has lots of lovely military cash to spare.

So you reckon they will finance a sub base? That would be nice, but no mention of it yet.

You really are myopic, once they have the subs they can annex that place of the Long White Cloud, ideal.

One has to agree with the sentiment being expressed in France from all levels of government. The FM has described the submarine cancellation as a slap in the face and 'Trumpiesque' in nature. Apparently they were told nothing of the negotiations. I am hearing the same sentiment widely expressed in Canada today. Moves such as this only serve to give the impression that the Americans and shifting their priorities and former close allies can go to hell. There is little doubt that the Europeans are seriously given more thought to lessening American involvement in there own security.

In any case this entire scheme makes little sense to me, personally I consider it quite aggressive and possibly only intended to satiate the desires of confirmed war mongers like Snubbles and similar folks.
A true diplomat is a person who can tell you to go to hell in such a manner that you will be asking for directions.
