Videos circulating on social media show the widespread damage after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the Mexican port city of Acapulco on Tuesday night, with a force that was able to shake the capital Mexico City, some 230 miles away.
It killed at least one person, authorities said, and Mexican state power utility the Comision Federal de Electricidad said in a statement that 1.6 million users were left without power in Mexico City and the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Morelos.
Social media videos showed the extent of the damage. One video that has received more than 31,000 views shows an upmarket hotel in Acapulco, a popular holiday resort, that has seen its wall damaged by the earthquake, with plaster crumbling onto the floor and a pile of cement blocks that have fallen down the stairs as a result of the incident.
