Missing Belarus Dissident Found Hanged in Ukraine Park

A missing Belarusian dissident was on Tuesday found hanged in a park in Ukraine, with police opening a murder probe and supporters accusing the regime of Alexander Lukashenko of killing the activist who helped his compatriots flee repression.

Vitaly Shishov, 26, headed the Belarusian House in Ukraine, an non-governmental organization, and was involved in everything from helping fellow compatriots settle in Ukraine to staging anti-regime protests.

Belarus strongman Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, has been cracking down on any form of dissent since mass protests erupted after last year's elections, deemed unfair by the West.

Many Belarusians have fled, often to neighboring Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania.

"Belarusian citizen Vitaly Shishov, who had gone missing in Kiev yesterday, was today found hanged in one of the Kiev parks, not far from where he lived," the police said in a statement.

The police said they had opened a murder probe and would pursue all leads including a possible "murder disguised as a suicide."

Activist Oleg Ovchinnikov told AFP that Shishov had bruises on his face and a broken nose when he was found in the woods on the outskirts of Kiev.

An AFP journalist saw several police cars and dozens of police at the scene, some carrying black bags.

The Belarusian House in Ukraine accused the Lukashenko regime of being behind the murder of Shishov.

"There is no doubt that this is an operation planned by Chekists to liquidate a Belarusian who presented a true danger to the regime," the NGO said in a statement, referring to security service agents.

The activist went jogging in Kiev on Monday morning but did not return and could not be reached on his mobile phone.

Shishov moved to pro-Western Ukraine in the autumn of 2020, after joining anti-government protests in Belarus, and helped establish the Belarusian House in Ukraine.

    'Followed by strangers'
The NGO said that it had repeatedly received warnings about possible "provocations, including kidnapping and liquidation."

Friends of Shishov said he had been followed by "strangers" while jogging recently, according to human rights organization Viasna.

Belarusian authorities have used force to put down historic demonstrations against Lukashenko's rule and have been trying to snuff out remaining dissent, jailing university students and shutting down independent media.

Belarus has a history of political killings and disappearances, and regime critics have claimed that the Belarusian security services run death squads that hunt down and target Lukashenko opponents.

In 2019, a man who claimed to have served in an elite Belarusian police unit, Yury Garavsky, gave sensational testimony to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, saying he helped murder three of Lukashenko's political opponents 20 years ago.

The United Nations called on the Ukrainian authorities to conduct a "thorough, impartial and effective investigation into what happened" to Shishov.

"This adds another level to our concerns and our worries about what is happening in Belarus," UN human rights office spokeswoman Marta Hurtado told reporters in Geneva.

    "The situation is deteriorating clearly."

    'Not safe even abroad'
Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya expressed her condolences to Shishov's family.

"Even abroad Belarusians cannot be safe as long as there are those who are trying to take revenge on them and hide the truth by getting rid of the witnesses," Tikhanovskaya said in a statement on messaging app Telegram.

She also thanked Ukrainian authorities for opening a murder investigation.

Shishov's death came as Belarusian athlete Krystsina Tsimanouskaya said over the weekend she was forced to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics and threatened with forced repatriation for criticizing her athletics federation.

The sprinter, who was granted a humanitarian visa by Poland on Monday, said she feared being jailed if she returned to her country.

Her husband Arseny Zdanevich told AFP on Monday he had fled from Belarus to Ukraine and was hoping to join his wife "in the near future."

Lukashenko sparked international outrage in May by dispatching a fighter jet to intercept a Ryanair plane flying from Greece to Lithuania in order to arrest a dissident onboard.

I posted this in the other Belarus thread earlier.

She also thanked Ukrainian authorities for opening a murder investigation.
Which is most likely the offence here.

Not stupid at all. In our apparent naivete' (or maybe just our government spin and hype amplified by the media) we parrot this assumed narrative that the Opposition to any political figure or governmet that we do not like is a monolithic, combined entity. It is anything but. To use one example of this stupidity, thus Syrian Kurds and Isis are 'allies' because they both oppose the Baathist Assad regime. How did that work out for ya?

Fuck off with your whataboutisms and waffle. Socal's comment is a non-sequitor at best, and typical JAQing (more likely).

Of course it is stupid. You were a banker and work with probabilities - the probability that another opposition party supporter committed the crime as opposed to government agents is ludicrously low and you'd never back it

Not stupid at all, in fact quite true. (It's also why y'all are being so naive about Navalny in Russia- he's a nobody, widely reviled by the anti-Putinistas). Of course it neither proves or disproves anyone's theory as to what happened to the strange fruit in Ukraine... but you will have to factcheck yourself I'm afraid. Belarussian bodies in Ukrainian parks fail to excite me. Has it been officially confirmed a homicide yet?

Not many hanging suicide victims end up with "bruises on his face and a broken nose"... but have fun JAQing off.

A link to that would be good . . . and it still doesn't mean any opposition pols had anything to do with it.

Which really has nothing to do with the Belarus dictator ordering the beating, jailing or extrajudicial killing of people who threatens him.

    Classic diversionary three stooge waffle.

Regarding the Belarusian athlete that they tried to force back home after criticising her coaches on social media (what a crime!):

Tsimanouskaya had been scheduled to board a flight for the Polish capital Warsaw, but a member of the Belarusian community in touch with her said diplomats had changed her flight due to security concerns.
    And wouldn't you know....

Belarus National Olympic Committee is headed by the country's authoritarian president Alexander Lukashenko and his son Viktor.
I'm sure his son Viktor is highly qualified to run such an organisation and his appointment has nothing to do with the fact that his father is a murderous dictator.

If the Belarboy has indeed been offed, then an obvious first question is who would display his dangling corpse for publicity in a Ukrainian park? And why?
Was he killed there? Or transported there, and strung up. What was the actual cause of death?
Was he a really good boy like his mum says, or was he a bit devious? Did everybody love him (well, apparently not)?
Were/ are there any parties that stand to financially gain from his unfortunate mishap?
Was he gay, and bent? Did he partake of rentboys?

Just a few pointers to get the TD CSI off and running.
