The English city of Liverpool has been removed from UNESCO's list of world heritage sites because new buildings undermined the attractiveness of its Victorian docks.

    Key points:
    • Only two other sites have ever before been stripped of their world heritage status
    • UNESCO warned Liverpool in 2012 plans for flats and offices would destroy the city's skyline

The city that gave birth to The Beatles was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2004, joining sites including India's Taj Mahal, Egypt's pyramids and the Tower of London.

Sometimes the progress can be managed in a similar style or sensitive to important surroundings

Doubtless harry's attitude will be a bit different with the 'chinkies' making 'progress' in places like Luang Prabang.

No Big deal they've lost the status, tourism wasn't really about the heritage status its more to do with the vibrant flourishing city that makes Liverpool what it is today.

Not any kind of heritage that UNESCO understands, anyway.

We stayed in the same hotel as a bunch of their delegates on a visit to Sukhothai once.

Looks a nice little number, but their junkets will have been hit by COVID.

Not that informed at all sybille.

I put "progress" in quotes because I disapprove of destroying areas of historical or natural beauty with the architectural equivalent of cardboard boxes.

    Added: Ironically...

The decision was made at a UN meeting in China

Liverpool deserves World heritage listing because of the slave trade, and the Beatles. What does a few ugly buildings in an ugly city have to do with it?

It was all to do with Evertons FC's new 500million pound stadium being built on the waterfront.

Apparently its gonna lower the tone of the area
