Massachusetts police responding to group of 'heavily armed men' claiming to 'not reco

A bizarre incident is playing out Saturday morning in Wakefield, Massachusetts. According to local police: "during a motor vehicle stop, several heavily armed men claiming to be from a group that does not recognize our laws exited their vehicles and fled into the woodline" near Interstate Highway 95.

The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. when a state trooper came across a group of 8 to 10 people refueling on the side of the I-95 highway in Wakefield, a suburb of Boston. The group was dressed in military-style uniforms, carried tactical gear like body cameras and helmets and had long guns slung over their shoulders.

They told officials they were on their way to Maine from Rhode Island for “training,” Col. Christopher Mason said.

Officials said they made two arrests and the rest of the group, which calls itself “Moorish American Arms,” fled into a wooded area that is now surrounded by police.

A stretch of I-95 is closed and there are shelter-in-place orders for people who live nearby.

Police negotiators are talking to those hiding in the woods. “We're trying to successfully and peacefully resolve this,” Mason said.

The Wakefield Police Department said in an early morning statement: "Approximately 8 males fled into the woods carrying rifles and handguns and appear to be contained in the wooded area adjacent to the highway. No threats were made, but these men should be considered armed and dangerous."

Massachusetts State Police, who are also on the scene, tweeted early Saturday: "We have several armed persons accounted for at this scene on Rt 95. They are refusing to comply with orders to provide their information and put down their weapons. We are asking residents of Wakefield and Reading to shelter in place at this time."

At around 6:40 a.m. ET, state police announced that two suspects were arrested by members of The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council in Wakefield. Police took them into custody and transported them to one of their barracks.

"The situation is ongoing w/remaining members of the group. We continue to work to resolve the situation peacefully," they tweeted.

Police said a "heavy police presence" will remain in the area, and they are asking residents to lock their doors and stay home.

No injuries or shots fired have been reported.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.

Wakefield Standoff Suspects Claim To Be Part Of Group Called ‘Rise Of The Moors’

WAKEFIELD (CBS) — Interstate 95 in Wakefield was shut down by a standoff between Massachusetts State Police and a group of heavily armed men Saturday morning. The men claim to be part of a group called “The Rise of The Moors – The Moorish American Arms.”

The group claims to be American nationals but not US citizens. They have a Moroccan flag.

The standoff stems from an incident hours earlier where a trooper stopped on I-95 to help two cars pulled over in the breakdown lane. State Police said it appeared the two cars were refueling, but the trooper quickly noticed eight-to-10 people were wearing full military-style uniforms. They were armed with long rifles and pistols. The trooper asked for driver’s licenses and proper licensing for the guns but they did not provide any.

They were allegedly headed from Rhode Island to Maine with camping equipment for training.

“This is not a well-known group. They’re not on the radar of law enforcement agencies widely across the country, but they are now,” WBZ security expert and former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

The leader of the group was live-streaming on social media during the incident. He said the group was not anti-government, anti-police, or sovereign citizens.

“These guys have hijacked social media and mainstream media in Massachusetts, to get their word out,” Davis said. “It’s very unusual – unless the group has a plan; unless the group has been thoughtful about merging on the public scene. If that was their plan today, they’re achieving that goal.”

Along with police, the group said they wanted a peaceful ending to the standoff.

Two suspects were arrested around 6:45 a.m. but the highway is still closed as negotiations continue.

I wonder how many of them said "I want to talk to my lawyer"?

All remaining suspects involved in an hours long armed standoff with police off Interstate 95 in Massachusetts on Saturday morning have been taken into custody, state police said.

State police said around 10:30 a.m. that seven suspects had been taken into custody and were being transported for booking. Two other suspects were apprehended earlier in the morning. Sweeps are now being conducted of the suspects' two vehicles and the woods, police said.
