China's UN envoy urges world uphold true multilateralism

China's UN envoy urges world uphold true multilateralism

    2021-06-11 10:04

"China's ambassador to the United Nations stressed on Thursday that the world needs to uphold true multilateralism in the face of global challenges.

"The world is experiencing two global crises. One is the global health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the other is the multilateralism crisis caused by unilateralism," said Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the UN, during a meeting with Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The world is far from peaceful, and unilateralism has not gone far away, the envoy said. Under the guise of multilateralism, some countries engage in power politics and incite group confrontation. Their practices are even more dangerous and destructive.

"All countries should join hands to safeguard true multilateralism, oppose the politicization of humanitarian issues and unilateral sanctions," Zhang said.

China will continue to support the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and other multilateral agencies to carry out humanitarian operations and protect refugees and other vulnerable groups under the guidance of the UN humanitarian principles.

Grandi introduced the recent key works of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He said the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted refugees around the world and he looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China and others to tackle the challenges together."

Allegedly there 193 sovereign countries recognised by the United Nations.

Should all of them be told what is good for them, by one 7 country cartel?

Should they make their own choices?

The "other countries" can live without that uninvited, can't they? (But let them to fill up the zillions of the containers sent them back empty, please please...)

Delivered results or once again "The west" "promising", unfunded, unachievable, inexecutable future deliverables. I know what I would choose.

"The west" has screwed the world for centuries, exploitation, human rights, extractive commercially and continuously slaughtered millions of men, women and children. Continuing to today. The world now has choices.

Others are offering their proven play book. The growth of those countries, their citizens, their businesses and their combined political power are demanding "The west's" attention.

The G7 has published its diktat yesterday, promises their centuries old reputation are making many smiles on disparate politicians faces.

The 7 countries "here today, gone tomorrow" politicians are offering a belated competing route.

They have had centuries to deliver what they are now "promising".

Their in power, out of power rotations, have no staying power or credibility as individuals, let alone a consistent regime.

The "east" did the same centuries before the "west". What goes around comes around. Don't get excited. This too shall pass. Perhaps the "south" is next in line.

We live in a changing world. The world's 'once was' great sponsor of Free trade- the USA, is now advocating protectionism and trade wars. The 'once was' Hermit kingdom, is now the world's major proponent of internationalism and free trade. China caused the death of more of it's own people through policy blunders than all of the USA's disastrous foreign wars combined, in the latter half of the 20th century. But in the current century, it kills a tiny fraction of the people that the USA does.

I think, if the US is to compete on an equal footing with China going forward, more trade and development inducements and less bombs, sanctions and threats will be required. Forming a protectionist 'whiteboys club' with the G7 will only highlight the relative decline.

sabang, this isn't about the US, irrespective of how much you, Klongdick and OhNo want to make it so.

Except it's not . . . they love the idea of free trade as long as it suits them and they can use it as a weapon - to wit; Australia.

You've been to China as a banker maybe? - I've been there for US IT manufacturers and developers - good luck trying to set up a business in China, trying to keep your IP, deciding who you hire, secure yourself from fraud etc etc etc.

Nah, it is not "the world's major proponent of internationalism and free trade" by a long shot.

Well yes- and so does the USA. As long as they don't like the idea of war and foreign invasion, I reckon the world can deal with them.

Edit - & of course so does the EU, when it suits them.

Wasn't there someone called Genghis Khan who conquered by force the biggest empire with a continuous border in history . His hordes committed wholesale slaughter and enslavement for any city that resisted as they murdered and pillaged their way as far as the Danube in the "west" and to the Persian gulf?
Then there was Maos "cultural revolution" that killed millions of his own people.
Then of course there was the Kim family and Pol pot.

What a blessing it must be to have such a myopic memory like OhOh.

You forgot the Crusaders, they also had conquered not so small empire lasting up to our time. That, however, cannot be compared with the "murdered and pillaged way" of others, can be?

And then, we have empires, that never reach over their border...

Some however continue to adopt the same play book, slaughter, in the 21st century, by choice. Whilst visiting the temples every Sunday.

One should celebrate others have been able to create, deploy, prosper, refine and share an alternative.

Long may they continue to change, on so many levels, "water into wine".
