Russia warns West against sending troops to back Ukraine

Russia warned the West on Friday against sending troops to Ukraine to buttress its ally, after Kiev accused Moscow of building up a military presence on its border.

The United States had pledged on Thursday to stand by Ukraine in the event of Russian "aggression," after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of massing troops on the border.

Weeks of renewed frontline clashes have shredded a ceasefire and raised fears of an escalation of the simmering conflict in eastern Ukraine, where government forces are battling pro-Russian separatists.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would be forced to respond if the US sent troops.

"There is no doubt such a scenario would lead to a further increase in tensions close to Russia's borders. Of course, this would call for additional measures from the Russian side to ensure its security," Peskov told reporters.

He declined to specify which measures would be adopted, while insisting that Russia was not making moves to threaten Ukraine.

"Russia is not threatening anyone, it has never threatened anyone," Peskov said.

On Friday, Russia said its armed forces would hold military exercises close to Ukraine's border in the country's south to practise defence against attack drones.

More than 50 battalion combat teams comprising 15,000 people will take part in those exercises and practise "interaction with electronic warfare and air defence units", the defence military told reporters.

On Thursday, the US warned Russia against "intimidating" Ukraine, with both Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling their Ukrainian counterparts to stress support.

The Pentagon said this week US forces in Europe had raised their alert status following the "recent escalations of Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine".

    - Increase in fighting -

Ukraine has been battling pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions since 2014, following Moscow's annexation of the Crimean peninsula after an uprising that ousted Ukraine's Kremlin-friendly president Viktor Yanukovych.

Moscow and Kiev this week blamed each other for a rise in violence along the frontline that has undermined a ceasefire brokered last July.

Zelensky said on Thursday that 20 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed since the start of the year.

Ukraine's military intelligence accused Russia of preparing to "expand its military presence" in the separatist-controlled regions.

Ruslan Khomchak, chief of the general staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, this week said that more than 2,000 Russian military instructors and advisers were currently stationed in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly denied sending troops and arms to support the separatists and the Kremlin this week said that Russia is at liberty to move troops on its own territory.

"Russia is not a participant of the conflict," Peskov said on Friday, accusing Ukraine's armed forces of "multiple" provocations in the region.

A senior Russian official dismissed reports of Russia planning an attack on Ukraine as "fake".

"Russia is not interested in any conflict with Ukraine, especially a military one," deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko told state news agency RIA Novosti.

Together with France, Germany and Ukraine, Russia is part of the Normandy format of countries that have sought to resolve the conflict and in 2015 agreed the Minsk accords to reduce the fighting.

Zelensky was elected in 2019 on promises of ending the conflict, but critics say a shaky ceasefire has been his only tangible achievement.

The fighting has claimed more than 13,000 lives since 2014, according to the United Nations.

So Russia builds up military presence near the border of a country from which it has already illegally annexed territory, and then tells other people not to "build up tensions"?

Russia had a 50 year lease on its naval base inside Crimea. What Russia did is exactly what any great power would do. Secure it's military asset. Just like the UK did in the Falklands in 1982. Just like Turkey did with Cyprus in 1974. Both of whom are members of NATO.

Russia negotiated for 17 years to have Ukraine it's MFN partner under WTO. Russia gave away its empire and gave away east Germany in 1990. Under one condition. That Ukraine would remain a non aligned country. And it was written into the Constitution. And then in 2014, the US aided an overthrow of the elected govt and ripped up both agreements.

Now Ukraine is part of the US sphere. Russia LOST Ukraine in 2014. The US gained it. Not the other way around.

Tell me. Which sphere of influence is Ukraine in since 2014 ?

    From the other view...

Moscow warns of ‘measures’ against any Western troop deployment in Ukraine, as Kiev cites guarantees of US support in a conflict

Russia has warned that it would regard any deployment of Western troops in Ukraine as a serious provocation, after Kiev asked NATO to step up its local combat readiness and claimed the US would come to its aid in any future war.

On Friday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry issued a statement saying that it had received guarantees of American support after a telephone call with Washington’s top military official, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austen. “The US Secretary of Defense stressed that in the event of an escalation of Russian aggression, the United States will not leave Ukraine alone,” the Ministry said.

Asked about the prospects of a standoff in the region, Peskov warned that this could begin a potentially dangerous chain of events. The Kremlin official said that “undoubtedly, such a developing scenario would lead to a further increase in tensions near Russia’s borders. Of course, this will require additional measures from the Russian side to ensure its security.”

When pressed on what those measures might be, the official said only that the country would do "everything that is needed."

The public spat comes amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, after a series of reported clashes in the east of the country between Kiev’s forces and militias, who receive support from Moscow. Peskov called the escalations “quite frightening.”

Ukraine has since appealed to the US-led military bloc to increase its presence in the region. A call transcript published on Friday showed that Roman Mashovets, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, said that it’s been requested that the bloc consider “joint activities, including military exercises of Ukraine and NATO.” These activities, the transcript said, “should include land, naval and air components. In addition, it is advisable to increase the level of combat readiness of troops in NATO countries bordering Ukraine.”

In February, the country’s Ministry of Infrastructure invited warplanes operated by the US-led bloc to fly missions near Crimea, which it claims as part of its sovereign territory. Officials proposed that the skies be “used for NATO air operations in the airspace… which includes airspace over the sovereign territory of Ukraine and over open waters, such as the Black Sea, where the responsibility for air traffic services is delegated to Ukraine by international treaties.” Russia regards the region as its own after it was reabsorbed in 2014.

Moscow has previously described Ukraine’s membership of NATO and the deployment of troops there as a red line for the country. The situation has echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when Soviet weaponry was deployed on the Caribbean island off the Atlantic coast of America, sparking a crisis that led the two superpowers close to nuclear war.

^ the UK has had a presence in Estonia ever since the Russians started their aggressive stance over the Ukraine, a stance largely ignored by the EU but NATO has noticed. So much for the much vaunted EU Army ....much hot air and little substance by the block, as usual.

So Russia is worried about the US sending troops to the same place that Napoleon and Hitler staged in. What a surprise. Funny how every empire of the day finds a reason to build up military assets there. From the Mongols to Napoleon to the Ottomans to the imperial Germans to the British to Hitler.

Not at all. A very simplistic comment in fact.

I would suggest that the majority of the tension in the area is in the heads of the major news organizations "covering" the story.

If the US or Nato deploys troops into The Ukraine I'll consume a rack of hats. It's not going to happen, that would indeed be an act of war.

To be honest I don't know what "the West" is up to (if they are up to anything at all). Flash! Russia will not be returning Crimea. Ukraine, get the hell used to it.

If we have war games on the border, fair enough. I think if there are significant casualities, that's another matter. Haven't we already had sufficient of this shit.

We had better start establishing a more respectful relationship with Ivan, especially with China lurking in the shadows.

The same old shit becomes tiring.

Russ, Putin is a weak little shit, Russia as a people will never be sad about the demise of the Soviet Union. Former states individually, like Ukraine are better off, its only Puitn trying to relive the glory days. Russian has one thing and that is fossil fuel and Putin is wasting that resource at the expense of the people it belongs to, not long until it becomes a redundant resource, but by then the scum like Putin and his allies will have sequandered it and set themselves up - what then for the people. The Russians aren't the enemy, their politicians are.

So Putin squandered it eh. Is that why Russia has the 4th most currency reserves in the world ? That's the problem with propaganda. You don't know anything about the reality of it, but you assume that the data must reflect this based on the propaganda.

What is he doing with it apart frrom re-building military hardware and postiuring, has he asked the people what they'd like to do with their resource wealth?, no. What he has done is strut around like a pathetic prick squandering his peoples birthright. If you can't see that, then no wonder you complain about your father being a tight arse. where government forces are battling pro-Russian separatists.
The Ukrainian 'government' is illegitimate. Thus, whether the pro-Russians are Separatists or not is entirely in the eyes of the beholder.

This from a guy who actually is stupid enough to believe that Crimea had free and fair elections when there is a mountain of proof otherwise.

In the long run, the US will be found guilty of the same act as every other belligerent world power before it. Imperial Over-reach.

^ and if you are stoopid and naive enough to believe dear boy that the vast majority of Crimeans are not happy to be back with mother Russia, I hardly need comment further.

The only belligerent power there is the Russians and the cunts are at it again. Do yourself a favor and give the tin foil tomfoolery a rest.

Why he (Putin) does not just sit back and relax when at his gates has been amassing a huge army from 27 states, him being accused of the threatening not only EU but also others (participants)?

Surely, when the Russian and Chinese would exercised a huge war games in Mexico Gulf with another 25 states armies, no nearby country would provoke the world by building up their own defence gear inside their own territory, won't they?

    This issue is intractable.

Issues in the South China Sea are easy compareed to this baby. The situation in Xinshang is easy peazy.

We need a good discussion without the name calling. Tough job for the bestest of mods.

    Any volunteers?

Funny. The poor retards in the Baltic and Ukraine were sent right back to Afghanistan to fight for the US. It was less than 10 years that they were all fighting hopelessly for the USSR there
