Iranian woman dies of heart attack before execution, still gets hanged

Zahra Ismaili was convicted of killing her husband; her lawyer says he was abusive and she acted in self-defense.

An Iranian woman who died of a heart attack shortly before her execution last week was hanged anyway to placate her alleged victim’s mother, her lawyer said.
Zahra Ismaili had been convicted of murder for killing her husband. Ismaili’s lawyer, Omid Moradi, said her husband was abusive and that she killed him out of self-defense, The Times reported.

Moradi said Ismaili was sent to be hanged in the Rajai Shahr Prison, in the town of Karaj, near Tehran.

She was forced to wait behind 16 men who were executed and watch. While in line, she collapsed, apparently from a heart attack, and died.
Her lifeless body was hanged anyway so her husband’s mother could kick the chair out from under her legs, which was considered her right.

Her cause of death was listed as “cardiac arrest,” according to Al-Arabiya.
The woman’s husband, Alireza Zamani was an official in the Iranian intelligence ministry, Moradi said. The couple had two children.
Iran draws harsh criticism from the international community for its executions, which include killings of dissidents, non-violent offenders and people convicted of committing crimes as minors.
Iran executes more people than any country besides China. The UN said Iran executed at least 233 people in 2020, including at least three who were minors at the time of their alleged offenses.

Just when you think 'Thai revenge' can be brutal, the ol' Persians have only gone and legalized it.

What happened to that guy that threw acid in a woman's face, and then was sentenced to have his eyes burned out around 10 years ago.

The victims family showed mercy if I remember correctly.
Anyway, at least she cheated them out of their murder.

As if being hung isn't bad enough.

Being forced to watch 16 others being hung one by one as you're waiting for your turn must be indescribable.

By the sounds of the method (chair being kicked out from under them) it sounds like it isn't the more humane method of snapping the neck causing almost instantaneous death, but being slowly strangled to death while struggling.

This happened at the botched Nuremburg executions when some of them took 14-28 minutes of hanging to die.

    ^^ Exactly....truly awful.

There is however, another method I only heard of about 5 years ago, and which they used in Eastern Europe.

The hangee is strung up with not much rope and looks like they are going to be dangled and strangled. But as they fall, someone grabs their legs and pulls down.
It may have been that way....otherwise it would take too long for the 16 to die.

There are two ways you know you are living in a civilised country: you can drink the water out of the tap and the judicial authority doesn't kill its penal offenders.

Essentially, that means the EU, Britain and the Antipodes, only.

Hanging is supposed to be a quick death, the fall separating the head from the body.

Unless it's Iraq in which case sometimes they overdo it.

    This is just strangulation.

Pretty sure the idea is NOT to separate the head from the body. Heads flying across the room is considered bad form.

Think it is mostly fracture of the spine and/or blood vessels. In a fair number of cases it is simple asphyxiation (blocking blood vessels with no fracture).

The Iranian method sounds like a short drop hanging. That is basically just strangulation.

Many other countries use/d the long (or measured) drop, which has a fair chance of being much quicker.

In the UK before the development of the long drop, a hangee would give the hangman a tip so that he would grab their legs and pull down, thus speeding up the strangulation and ending the misery more quickly.

One theory of the origin of the saying 'pulling your leg' is based on that (if they pretended to do it, but didn't), but has largely be dismissed, which really makes this post completely pointless.

I thought it would be obvious that I didn't mean it literally when I said: "Unless it's Iraq in which case sometimes they overdo it".

But maybe you didn't get the relevance.
