    So, don't tell them you're English or Spanish. Spanish because of history . . . English because . . . well . . . reasons.

Blame the Spaniards- they fully deserve it! Except, after some months in Sth America, our departing flight (travelling with a mate) was Rio to Madrid. Gotta stay in Madrid for a while then, right?
Loved the people, crazy bunch of locos. Loved Madrid. I just find it impossible to dislike people, especially people that live life to the full like that. Oh, well, blame the Conquistadors.

    Nah, just people like you.

Never had any problems, no reason to. Speak Spanish, don't be arrogant and be interested in and respectful of their country/culture.

Spanish is the lingua franca of many different peoples. There is definitely a kind of caution, a kind of begrudgement, among the Quechua with respect to ole' whitey- or was back then. I can understand why, too. But I am sure if you took the time to get to know them a bit, and spoke the rudimentary lingo (that never does any harm) you would pierce the shell, be accepted as an individual, and find a very likable people beneath. But the onus is on you- they don't great you with garlands. Not so far different with honkies & Cantonese actually.

In contrast, I found the Chilenos to be some of the warmest, most outgoing people I have ever encountered.

I think you're confusing it with them not liking you very much. Which you probably get a lot.

You see people like me wherever I go. Whereas you get treated like shit because you're a bell end, and then say "It's the conquistadors fault!".
