Mysterious 'obelisk' in US desert draws wild theories

A mysterious metal "obelisk" found buried in the remote western United States desert has inflamed the imaginations of UFO spotters, conspiracy theorists and Stanley Kubrick fans around the world.

The shiny, triangular pillar -- which protrudes approximately 12 feet from the red rocks of southern Utah -- was spotted last Wednesday by baffled local officials counting bighorn sheep from the air.

Landing to investigate, Utah Department of Public Safety crew members found "a metal monolith installed in the ground" but "no obvious indication of who might have put the monolith there."

"It is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you're from," warned the agency in a tongue-in-cheek press release Monday.

News of the discovery quickly went viral online, with many noting the object's similarity with strange alien monoliths that trigger huge leaps in human progress in Kubrick's classic sci-fi "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Others remarked on its discovery during a turbulent year that has seen the world gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic, and optimistically speculated it could have a different function entirely.

"This is the 'reset' button for 2020. Can someone please press it quickly?" joked one Instagram user.

"Up close it reads: 'Covid vaccine inside'" wrote another.

With officials refusing to disclose the object's location out of fear that hordes of curious sightseers would flock to the remote wilderness, a race has also begun online to geo-locate the "obelisk" using surrounding rock formations.

Bret Hutchings, the pilot who happened to fly over the obelisk, speculated that the obelisk had been planted by "some new wave artist."

Some observers pointed out the object's resemblance to the avant-garde work of John McCracken, a US artist who lived for a time in nearby New Mexico, and died in 2011.

"While this is not a work by the late American artist John McCracken, we suspect it is a work by a fellow artist paying homage to McCracken," a spokeswoman for his representative David Zwirner told AFP.

Either way, Hutchings admitted it was "about the strangest thing I've come across out there, in all my years of flying."

"We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it," he told local news channel KSLTV.

Looks like the lizard shapeshifting aliens realise they have been tumbled.

The monolith that was recently discovered in a remote area of the red-rock Utah desert has vanished, local officials said.
The nearly 12-foot-high smooth metal structure was found on public land while Utah state employees were counting bighorn sheep by helicopter on November 18 in the southeastern part of the state, a statement from the Utah Department of Public Safety said.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spotted the strange object in an area south of Moab and landed to check it out. The crew took images and videos of the discovery, which resembled an object from the classic science fiction film "2001: A Space Odyssey."
There was no indication of where the object came from, but Insider reported it seemed to have appeared between 2015 and 2016, according to images obtained on Google Earth.
Following the discovery, the Bureau of Land Management joked about extraterrestrial activity.
"Although we can't comment on active investigations, we would like to remind public land visitors that using, occupying, or developing the public lands or their resources without a required authorization is illegal, no matter what planet you are from," BLM said in a tweet.
But BLM said on Saturday that the monolith was removed from public lands by an unknown party.
In a Facebook post, BLM said the agency "did not remove the structure, which is considered private property," and that reports were received that a group moved the monolith on November 27. The post also said BLM does not investigate private property crimes, which would fall under the local sheriff's office.

Sorry to rain on some's interstellar parade but .
It is consistently described as a monolith , which inspires 2001: A Space Odyssey images. A monolith is a solid rock structure, which this clearly is not.
To me it looks like stainless steel , yet nowhere in any of the articles I read it mentions it's composition.
Is it possible that non of the investigators thought to examine what this thing is made of ? Are they morons?
If it is Stainless Steel, or any other metal it should also be a simple process to determine where the composite metals were mined, the composition of the metal , and probably by whom it was manufactured.

You’d think those advanced aliens would have found a way to put their monolith together with something besides rivets leaving visible marks.

Who knows though, since those aliens came to earth in the past just to stack rocks.

They aren’t really so high tech.

It also appeared to have a triangular section rather than rectangular.

Moab’s ‘Mr. Slackline’ claims he was behind the removal of the Utah monolith

The origins of the now-famous “monolith” sculpture in San Juan County are still unclear, but its disappearance Friday night is becoming less of a mystery.

Andy Lewis, a 34-year-old BASE jumping guide and slackliner in Moab who goes by “Sketchy Andy,” posted a video to his “Mr. Slackline” YouTube account on Tuesday morning alleging he was part of a four-person group that knocked down the sculpture.

“We REMOVED the Utah Monolith,” reads the title of the 23-second video, which includes clips of the sculpture being dismantled in the moonlight on Friday night.

Contacted by text message Tuesday, Lewis confirmed he had posted the video, which includes photos that were taken by a bystander and original video footage of the men transporting the remnants of the structure out of the canyon. Blurring effects are used to hide the men’s faces in the clip. When asked to share unedited video to prove he was involved with the sculpture’s removal, Lewis declined, saying, “There is no evidence.”
The so-called monolith, which is technically a misnomer since it’s not made out of a single block of stone, became an international media sensation last week after photos of the stainless steel object were posted online by the Utah Department of Public Safety.

The coordinates of the 10-foot-tall structure were soon published as well and, within a few days, hundreds of people made the trip to the remote and secluded part of northern San Juan County in Lockhart Basin, an area with no restrooms, trail signs or other facilities. The sudden surge in visitation caused widespread damage to the landscape, according the the Bureau of Land Management, including tire tracks, litter, toilet paper and hundreds of new trails.

Colorado-based adventure photographer Ross Bernards posted a report to social media Monday, explaining that he and his friends had been photographing the monolith after dark Friday night when a group of four men approached the structure with a wheelbarrow.

“They walked up and pushed it a little bit with their hands,” Bernards told The Salt Lake Tribune. “Then they gave it a couple real good pushes that shifted it and tilted it over to one side.”

“I hope you got your photos,” Bernards recalls one of the men telling him.

Michael James Newlands, Bernards’ friend who snapped a few quick photos on his phone, said his group had just been standing on top of the sculpture. “I was thinking, ‘It’s solid. It’s not going anywhere,’” he said.

But when all four men started pushing it back and fourth with more force, it was clear it was going to topple over.

“It popped out of the ground and landed with a very, very loud thud,” Bernards said. “One of the panels popped off as it landed.” The men dismantled the structure and loaded its pieces into the wheelbarrow, leaving only the triangular steel top of the prism.

Bernards and his friends returned to the site Saturday and watched visitors who were unaware of its removal continue to stream into the area, including a Cessna that landed in the sagebrush.

“We saw 70 to 100 cars come in and out of there,” he said. “It was nuts. And just people walking every which way; no one was trying to find anything that resembled a trail.”

Lewis, who claimed credit for the removal, garnered fame for his slacklining skills at the 2012 Super Bowl, where he performed during the halftime show with Madonna. He has since gained a reputation, at least among critics, for pushing the limits of both safety and legality in his extreme sports exploits in southern Utah. Lewis was fined after making a series of illegal BASE jumps in Arches National Park in 2014. A stunt in 2016 that involved temporarily decorating rock formations outside of Moab with Christmas lights drew criticism from some local rock climbers.

Both Bernards and Newlands said they were glad the sculpture was gone, adding the people who removed it got in touch Tuesday.
“I told them, ‘Thank you for removing it because it needed to be done,” Bernards said. “It was cool, but it was destroying the land over there.”
Bernards added that based on his conversation with one or several of the men, whom he declined to name, he’s convinced the group was attempting to protect the environment from overuse by removing the sculpture.

“I know that’s what [their motivation was],” he said. “I asked them specifically, and they said that’s exactly why they did it.”

“The dismantling of the Utah monolith is tragic — and if you think we’re proud — we’re not,” Lewis said in a text message statement. “We’re disappointed. Furthermore, we were too late.” He went on to cite damage caused to the area by the crowds, noting that the 2-foot-deep hole cut into the bedrock by the artist was only a small part of the sculpture’s overall impact.

“We encourage artists to create, land management to [manage] and the community to take responsibility for their actions and property,” Lewis continued, calling for a massive educational movement regarding the “use and management of our lands — not a distraction from it.”
A BLM official said removing the monolith didn’t violate its policies, so the sculpture’s disappearance isn’t being investigated. The agency is, however, continuing to investigate how it got there, which did violate the law.

A second, more crudely made metal prism appeared briefly in Romania this week, indicating the discovery of the Utah monolith may have started a trend. The Romanian sculpture, too, was illegally installed and is under investigation by authorities there.

'Magical' monolith appears on Isle of Wight beach in the UK

A monolith has mysteriously appeared in Britain - just days after similar ones were spotted in the US and Romania.

The unusual mirrored structure was discovered on the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England.

Resident Alexia Fishwick said she "was dumbstruck" when she came across it during a beach walk on Sunday and described it as "really quite magical".

A monolith found in Utah last month created wild speculation on social media and apparent copycats.

Many observers have presumed they were art installations left by sculptors.

The metal edifice in Utah was found planted in the ground before it disappeared just days later.

The monoliths from the movie were supposed to trigger an evolutionary shift to advance person(man)kind. Looking at where they've been found around the world you could argue that they've appeared to help those countries 'catch up'.
