Most remote island creates massive marine protection zone

LONDON (AP) — Tristan da Cunha, an island with 245 permanent residents, is creating a marine protection zone to safeguard endangered rockhopper penguins, yellow-nosed albatross and other wildlife in an area of the South Atlantic three times the size of the United Kingdom.

The government of the British overseas territory, which calls itself the most remote inhabited island on Earth, said Friday that fishing and other “extractive activities” will be banned from 627,247 square kilometers (242,181 square miles) of ocean around Tristan da Cunha and the archipelago’s three other major islands.

The sanctuary will be the biggest “no-take zone” in the Atlantic Ocean and the fourth biggest anywhere in the world, protecting fish that live in the waters and tens of millions of seabirds that feed on them, the territory said. The isolated area, roughly equidistant between South Africa and Argentina, supports 85% of the endangered northern rockhopper penguins, 11 species of whales and dolphins, and most of world’s sub-Antarctic fur seals, according to the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project.

Seems to be the standard UNCLOS 200m Exclusive Economic Zones.

How dare a small island in the South Atlantic tell the chinky global-trotting vacuum-cleaning fishing armada where they can and cannot drop their hoover-nets

Why don't you offer to build them a port on loan money from China to help persuade them to cease and desist from hurting the feelings of the Chinese people Ohoh?

Indeed. A poke in the eye of rapacious Chinese fleets. Interesting to see how this plays out.

Well we know the chinkies have several approaches:

    i. Trying to bribe
    ii. Squealing
iii. Provoking an incident and then... well, squealing.
    iv. Threatening

I daresay we'll see item iii in no time at all.

FFS, now they know it's endangered, the chinkies will be googling (or whatever the chinky equivalent is) northern rockhopper penguin recipes.

Rockhopper webs, slow cooked in soy and garlic.

The rest of the animal smells of fish. Chop off the feet and chuck the carcass overboard.

I believe it's another British Overseas Territory

Allegedly home to a few shepherds until invaded by Argentina.

Can't see any value in that. No customers, nothing that cant be found closer to home. But I may be mistaken.
Possibly claims on a slice of Antarctica could be useful.

Internationally accepted, except by some unexceptional countries, who have yet to adopt the UN UNCLOS 320 Km wide Exclusive Economic Zones, around the 4 islands.

It appears 'arry's already been sizing up commercial opportunities. It's been well known for millennia that the Chinese are adventurous in their eating habits. But in this instance as they are protected I doubt the UK would issue an export license.

    Keep looking 'arry.

Good idea, and I think a marine protection zone should be declared around two other remote Brit islands too- being South Georgia & Diego Garcia. DG comes with it's own 'police force', as it is leased to the US for military purposes.

    Couldn't agree more.

Protecting any area of the sea from the chinky parasites is a good thing.

It won't be carcasses they're chucking overboard... why waste time killing them?

Chop off the feet and throw 'em overboard still alive, to join the de-finned sharks and rays dying a slow death while they spiral down to the seabed.

Sharks fin I am particularly appalled by- I have boycotted it for well over 20 years. Which got me some strange and disapproving looks at Chinese banquets!
