New supersonic passenger jet in the works.

Get to Thailand in half the time for business class pricing.

Boom Supersonic has officially unveiled its XB-1 supersonic demonstrator aircraft, which has also been referred to as the "Baby Boom." The company plans to begin flying the jet next year as part of work on a larger, 55-seat supersonic airliner design known as Overture. The Colorado-headquartered aviation firm rolled out the XB-1, which carries the U.S. civil registration code N990XB, in a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic on Oct. 7, 2020. The company first said it was developing this demonstrator in November 2016, some eight months after announcing its plans for Overture.

    This is the demo plane

The trick will be ensuring that Overture is low-cost and reliable enough to make it a practical alternative to existing subsonic airliners. "On an available premium-seat-mile basis, Overture is meaningfully less costly to operate than subsonic widebody aircraft," Boom's website says, but does not give a hard cost per flight hour to operate the aircraft. Boom does state that they are targeting a seat cost to be around that of a business class international ticket on existing airliners.

I'd just like to preemptively tell all the tree hugging Malthusian greentards like Switch, to kindly go fuck themselves.

One hopes the US will have the same bans in place that they did for the Concorde....

If it's a seppo plane, I hope the rest of the world adds them. That would be long awaited karma.

Just wondering if you read the article or just looked at the pretty pictures. From the linked site.
Dubbed XB-1 Supersonic Demonstrator, or “Baby Boom,” this is a functional one-third scale prototype of a future full-size commercial production craft.
Revealed Tuesday evening at Centennial Airport in Denver, XB-1 is based on a Concorde study and will be used for testing. It features a 17-foot wingspan and seats two (pilot and engineer). Max takeoff weight is just 13,500 lbs, but the eventual full-sized version aims to be a proper passenger plane.

I've been following this company for 3 years. I said demo plane. They call it SST demonstrator. Same same

I'm afraid unless it's of the pop-up or colouring variety, you're probably out of luck.

What the living Christ are you arseholes even fucking saying. I posted a pic of the demonstrator jet. That's what it is. A small scale demonstrator that is being used to test the concept.

I was referring to the US ban on concorde flights resulting in them being limited to JFK and Washington. Also supersonic is only allowed over the oceans.

Anyway, supersonic has been done. Where's the hypersonic flights that were promised?

I would not hold my breath waiting to make reservations. IMO the future of super fast air travel is sub-orbital
Forget supersonic, the future of super-fast flight is sub-orbital

Those are mostly vaporware pipe dreams. Supersonic can be realistically done. Suborbital will never be certified for another 30 years minimum

Where is everything we were promised 30 years ago ? Other than computer power , technology has stagnated for the last 30 years thanks to crony finance capitalism.

How about we go BACK to supersonic first , before we start pipe dreams about space flight ? Which is frankly ridiculous.

I support supersonic because it has a chance.

At 63n years old, I am sure I will never fly on either a supersonic or a Sup-orbital . Being stuck in the US . for now I will settle for a slow boat to china.

Supersonic civil was being done when you were 15 years old. Don't count it out. Hang in there for 10-15 years

Was never done economically viable for mass consumption, simply a toy for the rich , which is what this is going to be also if it ever reaches production.
But thank you for taking the time to share this, is is certainly better than talking about each other or trump.
Personally I think pushing a plane through the air at supersonic speeds for commercial purposes is a loosing proposition , even if you went straight up outside the atmosphere, and stayed there for one hour, the Earth rotating at about 1,000 miles per hr will bring you down 1,000 miles away, combine that with some forward momentum and you can see where the future in super fast transportation is. For that reason I don't think there will be a major investment in supersonic other than a toy or tool , for the rich.
Personally . this is more my speed, and only $4,000.

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

Cell phones were a toy for the rich at the start. Jet travel was a toy for the rich at the start too. There was jet travel in my grand parents time. But they only traveled by boat across the ocean. Its a vital step in the economic system. The rich pay big bucks and the money is used to develop the technology.

Did you know that wing drag actually starts falling, AFTER you pass the sound barrier ? You end up with reduced drag coefficients, the faster you go. This is what makes supersonic an absolute no brainer. And that is what separates it from these ridiculous ideas about rocket powered flight. Supersonic is the sweet spot. Once we go supersonic, it will never make sense to go faster.

This is partly why Boeing gave up on the Sonic Cruiser. Because it was going to fly just below the sound barrier. Where wing drag is at its highest. It just didnt make sense. You have to get past the sound barrier.

The USA originally banned the Concorde for trade reasons. They didn't want the US airlines buying Concordes. They had their own 300 seat supersonic jet in the works. But that was too ambitious and never happened. And remember. They didnt fly the Concorde for 27 years just to save face. In the 1990's, the Concorde was responsible for 20% of British Airways profit.

Concorde ticket prices were doubled to over $7,000, one way, in today’s prices. As a result, Concorde was repositioned to provide a super-elite class for bankers, the rich, and the famous. Concorde became the place to be seen.

Despite the high price, sales were very strong. For one particular day, half the tickets for its first fare-paying London-New York flight were sold out in the first two hours of booking, (source).

Concorde started making money. Lots of it. “We made about $500 million pounds in net, clear profit.”. Estimates point to $50 million pounds in profit per year. That’s significant, even for a company the size of BA.

    This was the Sonic Cruiser

Concorde made a tidy sum for BA. They used it as a marketing tool for frequent flyers, and they estimate it bought in 30-50 million a year.

Why do you think Branson was so keen to buy it off them?

I flew Concorde a handful of times NY-London-NY. I didn't really see too many advantages to using it.
    I prefered the 747s

I suppose that if London based it was possible to fly to New York for lunch and be back home in your own bed that night if traffic didn't conspire against you.
I was NY based at the time

I heard that, beyond 'bin there done that' bragging rights, the experience was pretty underwhelming actually. What I did like was seeing the Concorde take off from LHR, you had a great vantage from the area where the rentacar agencies were clustered. A beautiful sight, which you certainly didn't get from a Concorde seat!

Quite a small cabin, seats not special. Food & service good, & a special waiting lounge. But the most telling comment I got (from a cathay pilot) was by the time you kind of wanted to settle back and enjoy it, you were in descent!

They didn't fly it for 27 years to save face. Time is fucking money. Long flights fucking SUCK. Nothing worse in the world than a flight longer than 3 hours.

    Every Concorde ticket was sold
