Second UK Walker Killed By Cows

It seems Mendip was dicing with death recently...good job he wasn't surrounded by tougher, Northern cows.

Police call for witnesses regarding second walker killed by cows

Death of Malcolm Flynn, 72, on the Pennine Way, came before that of teacher Dave Clark

A second fatality caused by cows has been made public by police, meaning there have been two such deaths within a fortnight in the north of England.

Malcolm Flynn, 72, from Carlisle, died after being charged by cows, police said on Friday.

Police asked for witnesses after Flynn was fatally injured in what they said was a tragic incident while he was walking on land near Thirlwall Castle and Gisland, Northumberland, at around 11.45am on Friday 11 September. Police said he died at the location, which is on the Pennine Way.

On Monday, deputy headteacher Dave Clark died after he was injured by cows while walking near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Det Ch Insp Jane Fairlamb said: “My thoughts are with Malcolm’s family and friends at this time as they come to terms with the loss of a loved one in what was a shocking and tragic incident.

“Our investigation is very much ongoing and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses, however, we are still trying to trace a number of people who were in the area at the time who we haven’t yet spoken to, and think could greatly assist our inquiries.”

Flynn, who was walking with a companion, was wearing glasses and a sunhat, a T-shirt covered by a fleece, and had a telescopic stick.

Officers are interested in hearing from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, particularly:

    • A white man with grey hair and a grey beard walking a dog, who is believed to have walked past the pair shortly before the incident.
    • A man and woman, believed to be in their 40, who spoke to the walkers before they entered the field.
    • A group of four walkers who spoke to Flynn’s walking companion immediately after the incident and offered to alert the farmer, as well as another man who entered the field and tried to divert the animals away from the scene. It is thought he left a fleece behind.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101.

    ^ What's all that about?

Why aren't they interviewing all the cows? Surely they should be looking for the guilty cow .... likely a black and white friesian cow weighing about 580kg.

There are cow attacks every year in the UK and a few result in deaths. I have no idea what triggers them.

Well that's a moot point now.
The walker should've hoofed it out of there but wound up on the horns of a dilemma - 'should I be cowed by this creature or fight like a man and then milk the story for all it's worth and skim off the cream ?'.

Most attacks are triggered by dogs....but not always. In 70's and 80's, had occasions on Pennine way and the Lake District where bulls were deliberately put close to footpaths to deter hikers....Practice has long since been banned.
Normally they just come wandering over to say hello.

Maybe it was because he had no troosers on... that would upset any cow. I've never heard it called a telescopic 'stick' before though.

And I thought the most dangerous part of my work commute was the ride down to Swampy from Korat. I'll have to be more careful... it looks like my thread has months to go... be a shame if it got cut short!

I called them cows, but the wild beasts that chased me were beef cattle... bullocks. That farm doesn't do dairy, and I checked the photos to be sure and there's not an udder between them. Maybe that's the case with a lot of these attacks? About 40 years previously a similar thing happened to me in a neighbouring field when I was out walking Jos, a basenji and my first dog. When I let her off the lead Jos used to run around nipping the back heels of the 'cows' and it drove them mad. Once she was back on her lead they tried to take revenge, and eventually I had to wade across that river to escape them.

I should have learnt. I won't be making that misteak again.

Having read my thread the BBC are also jumping on the bandwagon...

How common is it for walkers to be killed by cows?

A deputy head teacher killed by cows this week was the second dog walker to die after being fatally injured by cattle in Yorkshire this year.

Dave Clark was attacked in fields near Richmond on Monday.

In May, an 82-year-old man died from injuries he sustained while walking with his wife and dogs in the Yorkshire Dales.

But how common are these incidents and what can walkers do to protect themselves?

But if the calf is shapely it might be a struggle to ignore it for some.

Well, you're assuming that these animals were protecting their young, but that is just an assumption.

There's no mention of that possibility in any report.

Well cows are vegans so maybe it was the leather walking shoes that upset them.
Could’ve been pre-milking tension or maybe, like people, some are just bullies.

Well it is 2020 so rampaging homicidal cows shouldn't be ruled out.

Maybe they can smell COVID like dogs can, and are frustrated that they're not getting jobs at airports?
