California Governor Gavin Newsom Confronts Donald Trump On Climate Change, Wildfires: “57% Of The Land In This State Is Federal”
California Governor Gavin Newsom started his Monday meeting with President Donald Trump by thanking the Commander-in-Chief for his help with the California wildfires.
Newsom said the president had acted very quickly and that his major disaster declaration “profoundly significant.”
“I want to thank you and acknowledge the help that you’ve given,” said Newsom to Trump. Newsom then observed that the amount of federal wildfire support the state has received, “may be a record.”
He thanked the president for a new commitment to “double our vegetation management and forest management” over the next 20 years.
But Newsom then leaned into Trump with statistics that reflect the federal government’s responsibility for the recent wildfires.
“We can agree to disagree on the politics,” said Newsom, “but one thing is fundamental: 57% of the land in this state is federal and 3% is state forests.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom Confronts Donald Trump About Wildfires – Deadline
Hmm. So lax FEDERAL forest management is somewhat responsible for the fires Trump wants to blame on California. Now I wonder if this lack of management has been in the last four years.
The smoke from the west coast fires is now over New York and the east coast.
Seattle, Portland and the Bay Area still are in possession of the "cities with the worst air quality in the world" titles. The smoke here is so bad it is hard to breath when you are outside. I keep my house completely closed up all day to keep the smoke out and with the HEPA filtration I have it is not as bad as outdoors. This has gotten really old. It was reported that there was going to be rain and winds yesterday but apparently the smoke actually is changing the weather and even drying up rain clouds.
It feels like things are post-apocalyptic here.
Pheonix looked apocalyptic on the BBC news tonight.
Stay safe.
If only some of that rain we had last night would’ve blown westward! It POURED for eight hours. The weather alert on my phone went off at 3 am. I thought a tornado but was a flood warning for the nearby river. Luckily, I live on a ridge so no flood up here. Got to go back to sleep.
Yosemite National Park closes as wildfires scorch West Coast
One of America's most popular national parks, Yosemite, was closed Thursday as wildfires continued to scorch the West Coast, filling the air with toxic smoke and prompting evacuations in Southern California, officials said.
The federal government-run air quality monitor, Airnow.gov, showed that pollutant levels in the park were so high that they exceeded the site's index.
Dangerous air quality is expected in the park, which is spread across nearly 1,200 square miles in the Sierra Nevadas, for the next several days, the National Park Service said. It isn't clear when Yosemite will reopen.
Two wildfires were burning in or near the park, including the massive Creek Fire to the south. The 244,756-acre blaze ignited this month, trapping dozens of people at a campground in Sierra National Forest and destroying hundreds of homes and other buildings.
The fire was 18 percent contained Thursday.
