UK and Russia team up for hybrid COVID-19 vaccine

AstraZeneca is to start clinical trials to test a combination of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine with Russia's Sputnik V shot to see if this can boost the efficacy of the British drugmaker's vaccine, Russia's sovereign wealth fund said on Friday.

Trials will start by the end of the year and Russia wants to produce the new vaccine jointly if it is proven to be effective, said the RDIF wealth fund, which has funded Sputnik V.

AstraZeneca said it was considering how it could assess combinations of different vaccines, and would soon begin exploring with Russia's Gamaleya Institute, which developed Sputnik V, whether two vaccines based on a common-cold virus could be successfully combined.

Hey look, here is something suitably obscure for our resident nutcases to make a conspiracy theory of.

To think, a British pharma teaming up with Vlads Russia to develop a vaccine- Unthinkable. More likely a nerve agent.
I have a feeling the yanks ain't gonna like this.

    Sputinik

Yeah this is an outrage. Considering all the work they've done to make Russia look sub human to the average Anglo citizen

Great strides often come about by accident; would be nice if they inadvertently develop a vaccine for the common cold.

    Yeah, poor li'l old Russia.

It really takes some hardcore propaganda to make them look bad.

I happen to believe they are doing a far better job for the citizens of their country snubble, than our political system is doing for us. Certainly the US & UK.
Just look at how living standards have improved in those countries in the current century- while our system just makes the already rich richer, and the rest tread water.
So this non- stop propaganda just acts as a smokescreen for the gullible, and our politicians evade having to answer for their manifest failures. If that makes me a commie, I am a proud one.

So I guess they're hoping by adding one vaccine with 70% effectiveness to one with probably 30% effectiveness they end up with one with 100% effectiveness.

It sure does, and you have swallowed it hook line and sinker. Ask the average Russian if they think life was better under the USSR than today. Do you want to guess what the answer is the overwhelming majority of the time?

"The common cold" really just refers to a set of symptoms caused by more than one virus, and no one vaccine is likely to eliminate all of them any time soon. However, a good number of the viruses that cause those symptoms are coronaviruses; the theory that led to the ChAdOx1 nCoV-1 vaccine might very well be adapted to make vaccines for coronaviruses other than Covid-19, and perhaps rhinoviruses as well (though there are an awful lot of both, and these are not the only viruses that cause colds).

Whether it would be a good thing for future generations to go running to the doctor every time they sneeze is another matter. There is an argument that the occasional bout of mild illness is good for keeping our immune systems doing what they're supposed to.

    Mutate and survive.
