Another Colour Revolution Attempt? Belarus - Election Time.

Protester Dies In Minsk As Clashes Over Election Go Into Second Night

"A Belarus protester has died in Minsk as thousands of people turned out to demonstrate against official election results that say incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka won in a landslide.

The protester died after an unidentified explosive device blew up in his hand while he tried to throw it at the police, the Interior Ministry said, according to RFE/RL’s Belarus Service. The incident occurred during a confrontation with the riot police, who had arrived to unblock a square in the Belarusian capital.

There were reports that demonstrators were being fired upon when the man died. RFE/RL’s Belarus Service said several thousand people were in the area and some have attempted to build barricades.

Police reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets earlier and detained protesters as demonstrations against the result of the August 9 presidential election prompted a second day of unrest in Minsk and elsewhere in the country and Washington expressed concern over the election and the crackdown.

Dozens of demonstrators were reportedly detained in Minsk on August 10 as they assembled in the city center in a resumption of protests against the election.
The renewed demonstrations followed violent clashes between protesters and police the night before.

On August 9, some 1,000 people were detained in Minsk, and about 3,000 nationwide, after demonstrators took to the streets to protest what they called a rigged election after an exit poll showed Lukashenka winning with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Supporters of leading opposition candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who had less than 10 percent of the vote according to preliminary official results announced by the Central Election Commission (TsVK), had announced that they would stage a mass demonstration against the official tally on August 10.
The opposition in Belarus also has called for a nationwide protest strike starting at noon local time on August 11.

In its first comment since the election, the White House said it was "deeply concerned by the Belarus presidential election...and we urge the Belarusian government to respect the right to peaceably assemble and to refrain from the use of force."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed that sentiment in a separate statement while urging the Lukashenka government to "respect the rights of all Belarusians."
"We urge the Belarusian government to respect the rights of all Belarusians to participate in peaceful assembly, refrain from use of force, and release those wrongfully detained. We strongly condemn ongoing violence against protesters and the detention of opposition supporters, as well as the use of Internet shutdowns to hinder the ability of the Belarusian people to share information about the election and the demonstrations," Pompeo said.

Britain earlier called on Belarus to refrain from further violence against protesters following what it called the "seriously flawed" vote, while France has urged security forces to exhibit "the greatest restraint."
Tsikhanouskaya -- who has rejected the results giving Lukashenka his sixth term in office and says the vote was rigged -- was not planning on taking part in the demonstrations "to avoid provocations," according to her campaign team.

Tsikhanouskaya, who said in Minsk on August 10 that "I consider myself the winner in the presidential election," explained that her opinion was based on what she called "real protocols" collected at the majority of polling stations which, according to her, prove that she won. ...."

Belarus opposition leader had no option but to leave her country, says Lithuania

"Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanouskaya left her home country on threat of detention, and Belarus officials facilitated her departure, Lithuanian foreign minister Linas Linkevicius said. “She apparently faced certain pressure and did not have much choice but to leave the country,” Linkevicius told a news conference.

“Apparently, the other choice was not compatible with freedom, so she needed to take the offered possibility to leave the country, and used it”, said Linkevicius.

Tikhanouskaya was given a one-year visa and a place to stay in Lithuania, which is taking care of her safety, Linkevicius said."

One hopes the Lithuanian authorities can ensure her "safety".

Yeah, if you're going to fix an election, probably should go for something credible like 54% of the vote.

But no, he had to go for 80% and everyone knows it's bullshit.

    Except you of course.

Hundreds Detained, Firearms Used in Third Night of Belarus Unrest

Police in Belarus said Wednesday they had detained hundreds more people and used firearms against protesters in a third night of violence over a disputed presidential election.

Western governments have condemned the crackdown and the European Union said the bloc's foreign ministers would discuss Belarus at an extraordinary meeting on Friday.

Protesters rallied again on Tuesday night to contest strongman President Alexander Lukashenko's claim of having won Sunday's election, although they were in smaller numbers after police cordoned off city centers and limited transport.

In the capital Minsk, protesters and witnesses said riot police used indiscriminate force against those who did gather, firing stun grenades and rubber bullets in the suburbs.

In the southwestern city of Brest on the Polish border, police said they had used firearms against a group of demonstrators armed with metal bars who had ignored warning shots, wounding one.

"A group of aggressive citizens with metal rods in their hands attacked police employees in Brest" on Tuesday, interior ministry spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova said in statement.

"Firearms were used to protect the lives and health of the employees," she said, adding that "one of the attackers" was wounded.

The ministry said protesters gathered in 25 cities and towns on Tuesday night and that more than 1,000 people had been detained.

The latest arrests have brought the number of detentions to more than 6,000 after three days of protests.

More than 50 people sought medical assistance, it said.

Chemodanova said there had been smaller gatherings on Tuesday than on the two previous nights.

"The number of protesters was smaller last night, as was the number of cities where protests took place," she told AFP.

Dozens of people have been wounded in the crackdown and police said that one protester died when an explosive device went off in his hand on Monday night.

    Women form human chain
The protests broke out after authorities said Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, won 80% of the vote in Sunday's polls.

Election officials said Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a 37-year-old political novice who ran after other potential opposition candidates including her husband were jailed, came second with 10%.

Tikhanovskaya said the vote was rigged and claimed victory, demanding that Lukashenko hand over power.

She left Belarus on Tuesday for neighboring Lithuania, with supporters saying she came under pressure from authorities.

Protesters said Tuesday night's crackdown in Minsk was especially violent, with videos released on social media showing police kicking protesters lying prone on the ground, smashing cars with truncheons and assaulting passers-by.

Yan, a 28-year-old paramedic from Minsk who has protested every night since the election, said police had become more aggressive.

"Things were scary last night, it was complete lawlessness," he told AFP. "All of this is aimed at intimidating people so that they keep quiet."

Oleg Gulak, the head of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee rights group, said he was "stunned by the unprecedented level of cruelty and violence" used against protesters.

"Last night was the scariest night in Belarus's modern history," he said.

On Wednesday, several hundred women, many wearing white and holding flowers, joined hands to form a human chain in central Minsk urging an end to police violence.

Hundreds of people also gathered outside a pre-trial detention centre in Minsk in an effort to learn about the fate of missing family members.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Belarus would be discussed at Friday's extraordinary meeting.

The bloc on Tuesday condemned the election as "neither free nor fair" and Borrell threatened sanctions against "those responsible for the observed violence, unjustified arrests, and falsification of election results."

It's said, a sick dictator has the reins and the majority of the people want him gone. He lies about his opponents and responds to public protests by sending armed police out on the streets to brutalise those who participate.

But enough about baldy orange cunto, it's time they got rid of this Belarus bastard.

Here's me thinking Reuters was a well respected, international, unbiased news reporter.

    Ah well.

As we only have one report, so far. It's probably useful to await the fleeing candidates "truthful" version to be published, before judging the accuracy of Reuters.

Belarus Says 700 More Held as Women Stage New Rallies

Police in Belarus said Thursday they had detained 700 more people during a fourth day of protests over the ex-Soviet country's disputed election.

"Some 700 people have been detained for participating in illegal mass events" on Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement, bringing the total number of people detained to more than 6,700.

The ministry said it had registered fewer instances of mass unrest "although the level of aggression towards members of law enforcement remains high."

A total of 103 members of law enforcement have been injured with 28 hospitalized since Sunday, the interior ministry said.

In the capital and the town of Baranovichi, southwest of Minsk, drivers attacked members of traffic police, the ministry said.

"Members of law enforcement used arms to stop the transgressors," it said.

Rallies and clashes with riot police erupted in the authoritarian ex-Soviet country amid claims long-serving leader Alexander Lukashenko has stolen Sunday's election from his rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, 37.

Dozens have been injured in the post-election unrest and two people died.

Police have acknowledged opening fire on demonstrators and wounding one in the southwestern city of Brest on the Polish border on Tuesday night.

For the second day in a row, dozens of women joined hands in the capital on Thursday to form human chains, many wearing white and holding flowers, to denounce the violence.

A religious procession was set to take place later in the day.

    The dictator's dilemma:
The Communist Party of the Soviet Union won 100 percent in every legislative election.
George Washington took 100% of the vote, twice, which is no sweat when you run unopposed.
Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was reelected with 97 percent of the vote, up from 87% following the convenient death of his predecessor; the other 3% was spread among seven 'opposition' candidates who spent most of the campaign lavishing praise on him; he never quite matched another predecessor's 99.5%, but beats neighbouring peers like Uzbekistan’s Islam Karimov and Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Nazarbayev, who won with poor totals of 91% and 81%.
Hosni Mubarak got 89% in 2005 and Bashar al-Assad getting 98% with no opposition candidates.

The 99% club includes the Castro brothers and Kim Jong Il, while Saddam Hussein went for broke with 100% the year before he was overthrown, which may have been fixed.

Why a dictator decides between winning by 97 percent or 99 percent isn’t quite clear, though .

Approximately 6,7000, about 0.01% of the population, have been accused of, "acting in an unlawful behaviour". Which presumably is against some repressive law and detained prior to trial.

I presume attacking of the police with grenades, firing shots at and utilising metal bars as offensive weapons against the police men and women, whilst being filmed by the police, is a repressive law soon to be repealed by the new regime.

By your logic, if regime change is successful this time. There should be no outrage when others utilise the same means to overthrow the next democratically elected government.

Democratic elections or illegal, violent, possibly foreign funded, led, regime change.

If some of a countries citizens desire a change in election rules, democratically vote for a political party which announces they will modify them in accordance to your wishes in a certain time scale.

Failure to deliver their manifesto, legally defined promises, automatically dissolves their mandate, and a new election is instigated.

Something by RFE, VoA or Medusa cannot be found?

Our MoD (Master of Demagogy) did not disappoint again. Perhaps he can make the link to the quote of the lady who "calls for Russian military"?

But he (MoD) is surely watching the RT and knows how they speak and report about the "revolution"... Beside that 2 RT journos have been arrested and detailed by Lukashenko...

'Torture Chamber': Jailed Belarusians Reveal Prison Abuse

Emerging from a jail in Minsk with other Belarusians detained in a post-election crackdown, 27-year-old math teacher Yana Bobrovskaya said she never expected to make it out alive.

"We thought we would be buried in here," she said Friday, weeping as she recounted her experience to AFP.

"They can do anything while you have no rights," she added.

Bobrovskaya was one of hundreds of Belarusian protesters and chance bystanders who were being released after they were detained in a crackdown following President Alexander Lukashenko's disputed landslide win on Sunday.

Hundreds of anguished friends and relatives were waiting outside the Minsk detention center, and several ambulances arrived to take injured people away.

Many detainees gave harrowing accounts of beatings, humiliation and torture.

Some women were threatened with rape, while men spoke of being ordered to strip naked and get down on all fours while officers beat them with truncheons, according to Amnesty International.

One man told AFP he was burned with cigarettes, while another said he was given electric shocks and beaten with sticks.

Many seemed unafraid to speak out and some men undressed to show AFP journalists their bruised buttocks and stomachs.

Bobrovskaya said she was detained even though she did not take part in protests and spent three days without food with some 50 women crowded into a cell designed for four.

When they asked for tampons and toilet paper, they were told to wipe themselves with their clothes, she said.

"It's hard to imagine such things in the 21st century," she said, describing Belarus as a "peaceful country."

She said her cellmates were well-educated professionals like her.

"We started joking: 'If you haven't been to jail, you're not a Belarusian."

    'We do whatever we want'
Olesya Stogova, a Russian citizen in her 30s, said she received equally inhumane treatment.

She was visiting Belarus from her home city of St. Petersburg and was snatched off the streets in the crackdown.

Stogova said she was kicked and beaten with truncheons and there were almost 40 women in her four-person cell.

When she said she was Russian, guards unleashed an expletive-laden tirade.

"We'll do whatever we want. We'll leave you disfigured — you won't recognize yourself," she said guards told her.

"There was only tap water and nothing else. We were packed like sardines in a tin, all sweating," she told AFP.

"It was a torture chamber," she said.

Male detainees were treated even worse, she said.

Ales Pushkin, a prominent Belarusian performance artist, said he was detained after a protest and beaten until he "turned blue."

"All these days I've been brutalized," the 55-year-old told AFP.

Protester Andrei Yanushka said he had been beaten on the head and body.

Speaking just before an ambulance arrived to take him away, the 35-year-old said Lukashenko should no longer remain at the helm.

"He cannot be president of Belarus," he said.

    'Gulag experience'
While many detained protesters are being released under pressure from a growing wave of demonstrations, high-profile Lukashenko critics are still being held in jail.

Vitali Shkliarov, a Washington-based political analyst and strategist who has worked on U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, was detained while on a visit to his native Belarus.

The 44-year-old, who is a visiting scholar at Harvard University, has been accused of helping plot mass unrest, a charge he denies.

He is being held in a jail in central Minsk where he is experiencing humiliations and pressure, his lawyer Anton Gashinsky said.

Several days ago Shkliarov was strip-searched and put in a standing cell where he spent five or six hours without food or water, the lawyer said.

He also had to sleep with the lights on and listen to Soviet-era propaganda songs.

"He calls this torture," Gashinsky told AFP, adding that his client said his experiences were similar to the Gulag camp memoirs of Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

"He is trying to hang on in there," the lawyer said.

Belarus Leader Lukashenko Says Wants to Talk With Putin

Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko said Saturday he wanted to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin as protests grew over a disputed election.

"The aggression against Belarus is developing. We need to contact Putin, the president of Russia, so that I can talk with him now," Lukashenko said in a meeting with government officials.

"Because this is already a threat not only to Belarus."

Thousands of opposition supporters have been taking to the streets for days against Lukashenko's claim to have won re-election last Sunday with 80 percent of the vote, in the biggest challenge to his rule since he came to power in 1994.

Belarus is more tightly linked to Russia than any other country and the two form a "union state" with an integrated economic zone and military alliance.

"The protection of Belarus today is no less than the protection of our entire space, the union state, and an example to others. If Belarus cannot withstand it, this wave will roll there."
