It's not nice from him - and not democratic - that he does not want to repeat the election he has won.

However, I cannot remember a case of repeated election when some were not happy with the results... (Wasn't it in Ukraine? Oh no, they did not need any election, did they?)

Belarus State TV Workers Join Anti-Lukashenko Strike

Belarusian state television and radio workers walked off the job Monday, becoming the latest public employees to support the opposition in calling for new elections after last week's official results showed a landslide victory for strongman President Alexander Lukashenko.

The unprecedented show of resistance comes after several state television presenters resigned last week in protest against the government’s harsh crackdown on peaceful opposition demonstrators.

Around 100 Belteleradio camera operators, directors and recent resignees have gathered outside the broadcaster’s headquarters in Minsk, the independent tut.by news outlet reported.

The journalists are demanding that the authorities invalidate the Aug. 9 presidential election results, release political prisoners and abolish censorship in the media.

Belteleradio’s Belarus 1 television channel broadcast reruns of Sunday’s news for at least two hours during the workers’ strike, the Russian state-run TASS news agency reported Monday.

Employees who agreed to meet Belteleradio chairman Ivan Eismont inside the office said he urged their disgruntled colleagues to resign rather than strike, according to tut.by. One of the protesters said Belteleradio employees would continue striking and defy Eismont’s calls for them to quit, according to the same report.

Around 55 out of Belteleradio’s 1,500 employees have signed a petition calling for the nullification of the election results and an end to media censorship, tut.by reported. Belarus’ state-owned All-National TV (ONT) and Capital TV (CTV) stations have also declared plans to strike, it added.

Lukashenko’s main challenger Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and her supporters dispute his claim of an 80% victory in the Aug. 9 vote. Thousands took to the streets of the capital Minsk and other cities over the past week to protest the election results, including more than 100,000 who gathered Sunday.

State broadcasters, a major source of news in Belarus’ tightly controlled media environment, had initially aired footage of last week’s violent crackdown on the election protests to blame demonstrators and warn people not to participate.

Belarus 1 covered anti-Lukashenko protests on Sunday for the first time since the disputed election after previously characterizing them as “riots.”

Lukashenko defied calls to step down at a rally in his support earlier that day.

Cannot find on The Moscow Times report about the pro-Lukashenko rally that goes in parallel with the anti-Lukashenko one. Perhaps not so big but per some sources it's quite huge. Wondering that The Moscow Times - known for their unbiased reports - have not seen it...

Lukashenko says no new election 'unless you kill me'

Facing growing protests, President Alexander Lukashenko has said no fresh elections will take place in Belarus. Germany's president has called on Lukashenko to enter into dialogue with the opposition.

Belarusian opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said that she was ready to lead the nation. Speaking in a video address from Lithuania, where she fled following the election, Tsikhanouskaya said she was ready to facilitate a rerun of the disputed election.

"I'm ready to take on the responsibility and act as a national leader in order for the country to calm down, return to its normal rhythm, in order for us to free all the political prisoners and prepare legislation and conditions for organizing new presidential elections,'' she said.

Tsikhanouskaya also urged security and law enforcement officers to switch allegiance from Lukashenko's government, adding that they would be pardoned for their past actions if they did so now.

‘No new elections, unless you KILL ME’: Defiant Lukashenko confronts enraged workers as key industrial sites erupt in strikes

    17 Aug, 2020 11:21 / Updated 1 hour ago

"The president of Belarus, who won his sixth term in last week’s controversial election, had a rough face-to-face with striking workers in Minsk, telling them the vote is a done deal – at least as long as he is alive.

As massive anti-government rallies linger across Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko – the long-serving president who the opposition accuses of rigging the recent election – tried to win the hearts and minds of workers at MZKT, a key factory manufacturing an array of wheeled haulage trucks, including for the military.

The people amassed in front of the podium this Monday were seemingly unhappy about Lukashenko’s appearance. “Go away!” they repeatedly chanted, but couldn’t make the stubborn president budge.
“Thank you. I’m answering this question – you could yell some more,” Lukashenko told the crowd, with no sign of nervousness in his voice. The embattled president rejected the opposition’s calls to hold a new “fair” election – even to the extreme.

We have held the election. There will be no other elections, as long as you don’t kill me.

He told those gathered there that it was him, the “bad president,” who kept the jobs at the plant so that people “would not be thrown out into the street.” However, it all fell on deaf ears, and Lukashenko had to shorten his visit after being repeatedly interrupted.

As he spoke, a large column of workers from two other plants set out for MZKT, possibly to reinforce their striking colleagues, but Lukashenko had already left the plant before they arrived.

The president’s public appearance comes as nationwide outrage over the results of the election has spilled over onto Belarus’ industrial sites. By Monday, an array of key factories have either halted or limited their operations due to striking.

Among them are renowned truck-making giant BelAZ, Minsk-based carmaker MAZ, as well as Belaruskali, the country’s largest exporter of potash fertilizers, to name a few. There have also been reports of strikes at state-owned television network NGTRK.

Belarus’ opposition media was quick to describe the events as a nationwide strike – but the government downplayed the scale, insisting that only a tiny share of workers were taking part."

    More from your DW link:

"German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said there should be a "national dialogue" between Lukashenko and the opposition "to surmount the crisis," adding that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) could play a role with a "review of the election."

Seibert also said Germany was prepared to back broader EU sanctions against Belarus. The bloc's foreign ministers agreed on Friday to draw up a list of Belarusian officials who would be targeted with sanctions.

"Of course we are looking at the option of expanding the sanctions to other leading figures," Seibert told reporters."

Germany ignores the "Yellow Shirts" in France but call for "sanctions" on Belarus.

Macron wants EU to back Belarusians standing up for ‘rights & freedom’. But what about the Yellow Vests at home? Twitter users ask

"The French President called on the EU to throw its weight behind Belarusians demanding that their liberties be respected – but the online community was quick to remind him of fellow Frenchmen rallying for the same cause at home. Emmanuel Macron tweeted his support for the growing anti-government sentiment in Belarus, writing on Sunday that Brussels must continue “to mobilize alongside the hundreds of thousands of Belarusians who demonstrate peacefully for the respect of their rights, their freedom and their sovereignty.”

The demonstrations that caught Macron’s eye have been building since the controversial presidential vote in Belarus, that saw the sitting President Alexander Lukashenko being re-elected for a sixth term. The outcome was rejected by the opposition, who insisted that the vote was rigged.

Notably, the French President’s appeal didn’t receive an overly positive response in the Francophone realm of Twitter. He took quite a bit of heat online for prioritizing grievances of Belarusians over those of the French.

“Haven't you noticed that in France people also march for the respect of their rights?” one asked.

Another used the President’s language, reminding that “the Yellow Vests demonstrated, and still demonstrate peacefully today for the same demands, before you had them knocked down and clubbed.”

Thousands gather for pro-Lukashenko rally amid post-election protests
Christian Thiele and Ulf Mauder Aug 16, 2020

Moscow (dpa) - Thousands of people joined a protest in central Minsk on Sunday in support of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, whose re-election for a sixth term in office a week ago has unleashed mass demonstrations against his rule.

Footage shown by local broadcasters showed thousands of people thronging Minsk's Independence Square, with some shouting "For Lukashenko" and others wearing t-shirts saying "We agree."

Local media reported that some government employees had been pressured to join the protests, while photos of busloads of protesters being brought to the capital were circulated on social media.

Independent observers estimated 10,000 participants, while state news agency BelTA reported 50,000.

How Many People Gathered At Pro-Lukashenko And Anti-Lukashenko Rallies

Two rallies have been taking place in Minsk today, one was in support of Alexander Lukashenko on Independence Square, the other – at the Minsk-Hero City stele on Pobediteley Avenue. TUT.BY tried to calculate how many people gathered at these two events via the MapChecking service.

People from all over the country were brought to Minsk by bus and train for a rally in support of the president. Some of them came of their own will, others reportedly were told to attend otherwise face dismissals, being evicted from dormitory or promised financial rewards.

The president himself addressed the audience. According to the Interior Ministry, 65,000 people participated in pro-Lukashenko rally. Meanwhile, tens of thousands gathered at the at the Minsk-Hero City stele chanting: “Go away!”, “We believe! We can! We will overcome!”, “Lukashenko — to a police van!”.

Let’s count the number of people. For speed and convenience, TUT.BY journalists used the MapChecking website: there one can outline a zone and the algorithm will calculate the approximate area and the number of people who could fit in there.

So, let’s have a look at the photo from Independence Square

Lukashenko promises fresh elections in Belarus after new constitution is adopted via nationwide referendum

"Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been defiant in defending last week’s controversial election victory, has suddenly relented, saying new elections could be held – but only after a new constitution is adopted.

In a seeming about-face, Lukashenko told striking workers in Minsk that he would agree to a new vote – both parliamentary and presidential – but only after the nation adopts a new constitution via a referendum. He did not mention any specific time frame when it could happen, though.

“This is what will happen… We need to adopt a new constitution – that is what you wanted,” he said while facing a crowd of striking workers. “You need to adopt it via a referendum since this was how the previous constitution was approved. Under this new constitution, elections could be held – parliamentary, presidential and local – if that is what you want.”

Just hours ago, the newly re-elected president appeared set on sticking to his victory. During another rough face-to-face with workers, he said no other elections would be held unless he is “killed.”

The president’s comments come amid nationwide outrage over the election results. The first protests began immediately after Lukashenko’s victory was announced by election officials on August 9. Some demonstrations led to clashes with police, in which at least one person died.

The wave of public discontent has also spilled over to the nation’s major industrial sites, including renowned truck-making giant BelAZ, Minsk-based carmaker MAZ, as well as Belaruskali, the country’s largest exporter of potash fertilizer. The massive strikes prompted Lukashenko to hold some meetings with workers.

The country's opposition media was quick to describe the events as a nationwide strike. Yet, the government downplayed these reports by saying that only a portion of workers were taking part in the industrial action.

Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who fled to Lithuania in the wake of the protests last week, said earlier on Monday that she is ready and willing to take the role of an interim leader in case new elections are held."

An undated referendum, with unknown content but presumably written by the current government and "overseen" referendum/election counts?

Once security forces realise they could be on the end of retaliation from the people they will no doubt "side with the people" to save their sorry asses. Lukashenko is a dead man walking. The populace must be close to the magic 3%. Hopefully they will find a nice wall near a ditch for him and his henchmen. Vlad will cut his losses to keep on side with the people and keep them in the "fold".

So maybe, Mr. Putin has got scared now when he heard from EU (and from a big supperpower, please no names here) that he is not allowed to meddle in his Union fellow member as he promised more than 20 years ago to cooperate.

The Union State,[a] also referred to as the Union State of Russia and Belarus,[b] is an international organisation consisting of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.

Citizens of both parties are guaranteed the right to move and reside freely within the territory of the other party. For instance, Belarusian citizens can travel freely in Russia, and have the right to settle there to work or study, and vice versa.[4]

The Commonwealth of Belarus and Russia was founded on 2 April 1996.[5] The basis of the union was strengthened on 2 April 1997, with the signing of the "Treaty on the Union between Belarus and Russia" at which time its name was changed to the Union of Belarus and Russia.[6] Several further agreements were signed on 25 December 1998, with the intention of providing greater political, economic and social integration.[6]
    Union State - Wikipedia
Instead, the EU (also a Union, isn't it?) will meddle as they had meddled in Ukraine (and elsewhere as well). And it has worked so well, hasn't it?

NATO denies Belarus claim of military buildup, but watching situation

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO dismissed on Sunday allegations by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that it was conducting a military buildup near the country’s western border but said it was closely monitoring the situation following his contested re-election.

Earlier on Sunday Lukashenko said tanks and planes of the 30-nation military alliance had been deployed 15 minutes from the Belarusian border.

“There is no NATO buildup in the region,” NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said in a statement.

“NATO’s multinational presence in the eastern part of the Alliance is not a threat to any country. It is strictly defensive, proportionate, and designed to prevent conflict and preserve peace.”

Hadn't it been promised by his predecessor?

    NATO Expansion: What Gorbachev Heard

Declassified documents show security assurances against NATO expansion to Soviet leaders from Baker, Bush, Genscher, Kohl, Gates, Mitterrand, Thatcher, Hurd, Major, and Woerner

Washington D.C., December 12, 2017 – U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents posted today by the National Security Archive at George Washington University (National Security Archive | 30+ Years of Freedom of Information Action).
