Passengers injured as US fighter jet comes close to Iranian plane

Several passengers on an Iranian airline have been injured over Syria after the pilot changed altitude to avoid collision with a US fighter jet, according to Iranian media, but the United States military said its F-15 kept a safe distance.

The Iranian plane, belonging to Mahan Air, was heading from Tehran to Beirut on Thursday when the pilot staged a safety manoeuver, in an incident that Iran's Foreign Ministry said would be investigated.

Iran's official IRIB news agency quoted a passenger describing how his head had hit the roof of the plane during the change in altitude, and video showed an elderly passenger sprawled on the floor.

"I don't know what happened. A black plane came close to our plane and our plane lost its balance. I was sprung up and my head was banged against the ceiling," the unnamed passenger told IRIB.

Another said: "It was a fighter jet. A fighter jet was literally sticking to our plane. We lost balance and bounced up and down."

All the passengers left the plane, some with minor injuries, the head of the Beirut airport told Reuters News Agency. The plane arrived back in Tehran in the early hours of Friday, the Fars news agency reported.

The incident comes amid tensions between Tehran and Washington, with ties deteriorating since 2018 when US President Donald Trump exited Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and reimposed sanctions that have battered Iran's economy.

    'Visual inspection'

The pilot of the passenger plane contacted the jet pilots to warn them to keep a safe distance and they identified themselves as American, IRIB reported.

The US military's Central Command, which oversees American troops in the region, said the F-15 aircraft was conducting a visual inspection of the Iranian aircraft when it passed near the Tanf garrison in Syria where US forces are present.

Captain Bill Urban, the senior Central Command spokesman, said the F-15 "conducted a standard visual inspection of a Mahan Air passenger airliner at a safe distance of about 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) from the airliner this evening".

"The visual inspection occurred to ensure the safety of coalition personnel at Tanf garrison," Urban said. "Once the F-15 pilot identified the aircraft as a Mahan Air passenger plane, the F-15 safely opened distance from the aircraft."

He added the intercept was carried out in accordance with international standards.

I often wonder, when I read things like this, how the US would react if the tables were turned.

We saw what happened when after decades of bombing and invading other countries causing hundreds of thousands of deaths two planes were flown into the Twin Towers with 3000+ deaths (not all of them Americans).

The US went batshit ballistic . . . and continued doing what they've always done - revert to bombing and invading countries, even unrelated ones, because we all know that doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is . . .

...I assume you mean if an Iranian jet had buzzed a US commercial airliner over...um...wherever...the example you include doesn't really illustrate a turning of the tables...

Surely plane manufacturers have heard about inexpensive and potentially priceless technology like cameras, so there's no reason at all for commercial and military planes not to have them cover every direction.

Yes, and yes, it does. I am far from being anti-American and have no ulterior motive. If US planes were harassed by Iranian fighter jets anywhere . . . that is a fairly well clear issue of 'turned tables'. How about shooting down an Iranian passenger airliner with hundreds of deaths? Turned tables would be Iranian fighter planes shooting down a US passenger airline.

Seems to me the Iranian pilot overreacted.

Wondering what can be seen and "visually inspected" over a "safe distance of about 1,000 metres"?

I'm sure if the fighter aircraft had been Belgian or Brazilian the reaction would have been different but the US has history of blasting Iranian civilian passenger planes out of the sky

But then you buy the US forces line every time, never mind the countless times it’s been proven to be bs.

To visually confirm the aircraft matches the identity it is squawking on Mode 3. The air defences might presume that the radar signature of the aircraft would be enough to ID it before sending up a missile. Ask the Ruskies how well that worked when MH17 'intruded' into their airspace and they didn't check. Better to send up a fighter to confirm. A good international airline pilot would know this and consider it part of a normal workday when crossing areas of conflict. It is after-all part of their job description to know where they are going.

So it could be an overzealous US pilot playing silly buggers or a sleeping Iranian pilot that got rudely awoken when the aircraft collision warning went off and panicked. All this data will be available for analysis. Doubt that
    1. Either side will make it public.
    2. Any news media will bother following it up, they've already got their headline, move to the next story.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

    A fair analysis.

Sounds like both sides are being economical with the truth. Since when have US given distances in metres?
At a guess, I'd say airliner was not responding to M3. Fighter did classic intercept and scared the shit out of airline pilots who made rapid descent to airport.

In fact, it was in Ukraine airspace (so far, the Ukraine not yet "annexed")...

(actually the Ukrainskies did check, however, the one who was in charge of the "checking" is no longer "available")

I do believe the US military uses the metric system, but logical thinking, K.

Can't imagine why an Iranian pilot might get spooked when a US fighter jet approaches at speed. Can you?
Apparently, the explanation is the civilian jet was passing fairly close to a US military base- in Syria!! Still there? friggin' go home.

Weirdly aviation mostly still uses feet as a distance of measure worldwide. It's a hangover from the old days they haven't quite managed to get over. The maintenance crew on the ground will almost certainly be using metric during all their servicing processes.
