Saudi Arabia - Neom development - wants to be an "accelerator for human progress"

A vast mega-city is rising from the Saudi Arabian desert, 30 times larger than New York, built with a mixture of concrete, steel and unbridled ambition.

Part financial hub, part technology lab, part futuristic playground, Neom is slated to become the innovation capital of the world, according to its creators, striding both East and West.

The initial budget is huge — $US500 billion — and as a pet project of Saudi Arabia's young ruler, Mohammed bin Salman it's backed by the vast wealth of the House of Saud.

"It will attract the best minds and the best projects and be an accelerator for human progress, that's what they are calling it, and that line has been repeatedly trotted out," says journalist and Saudi Arabia watcher Bill Bostock, who writes for Business Insider.
"Some of the lines have fallen away, but that 'accelerator of human progress' line is really at the forefront."

The tribe standing in the way of a Prince's $700b dream

The Saudi Crown Prince wants to create the world's first high-tech megacity, known as Neom.
As Mohammad bin Salman tries to build an economy less dependent on depleting supplies of oil, Neom is a $700 billion project designed to attract mass foreign investment and tourism.

But the farms and homes of the Al-Huwaitat tribe are in the way.
Advertising for the city says it will have flying drone taxis, a Jurassic Park-like island, they'll be an artificial moon, glow in the dark beaches and it will have more Michelin star restaurants per capita than in any other city in the world.

And the propaganda says it's being built on "virgin" land.
But the Al-Huwaitat people dispute that and say they have lived in the area for centuries.

I hate the Saudi scum. But Mohammad Bone Saw is actually doing some good things. He's opening it up a bit as can be seen here. If I had freedom, I would go check it out myself.
