what percentage of thailand's population is unbanked?

it's ~7% in the US, and i'm going to guess it's higher here.

Slightly on a tangent. When I started work in Thailand, about half my salary came through direct payments to me, and basically it was up to me whether to declare it and pay the tax on it. I did, most of my colleagues did not. Now everything comes through the electronic salary system, and tax is deducted at source. I much prefer this to be honest, as I do not have to come up with a fairly large wedge of cash every April.

It is one thing using your card when in a restaurant or when buying a new tv but they should be forbidden in grocery stores.
That's complete and utter rubbish. I use contactless via my smart phone, the payment is authorised in less than 5 seconds, there is no signature required and if I need to verify then it is 2 seconds tap on my phone screen. You sound like you live in a different era.

They will all just be using apps such as this. Venmo

There are plenty more ways to make peer to peer cashless payments in seconds.

here in China everyone uses wechat or alipay. I have a QR barcode which you can scan and send money to my phone or visa versa. I can get it printed and you can scan that. even the beggars use it.
It's not that long ago it didn't even need to be attached to a bank account.
it was a completely black economy for a while there.

.A cashless society means no cash. Zero. . It doesn’t mean mostly cashless and you can still use a ‘wee bit of cash here & there’. Cashless means fully digital, fully traceable, fully controlled. I think those who support a cashless society aren’t fully aware of what they are asking for. A cashless society means:

    * Your child can’t go & help the local farmer to earn a bit of cash.
    * No more cash slipped into the hands of a child from their grandparent when going on holidays.
    * No more money in birthday cards.
    * No more piggy banks for your child to collect pocket money & to learn about the value of earning.
    * No more cash for a rainy day fund or for that something special you have been putting $10 a week away for.
    * No more selling bits & pieces from your home that you no longer want/need for a bit of cash in return.
    * No more cash gifts from relatives or loved ones.

What a cashless society does guarantee:

    * Banks have full control of every single cent you own.
    * Every transaction you make is recorded.
    * All your movements & actions are traceable.
    * Access to your money can be blocked at the click of a button when/if banks need ‘clarification’ from you which could take weeks, a hundred questions answered & five hundred passwords.
    * If your transactions are deemed in any way questionable, by those who create the questions, your money will be frozen, ‘for your own good’.

And before anybody slams this post ... don’t go shooting the messenger .. I’m sharing it because maybe we all need to take off our blinkers. Forget about cash being dirty. Cash has been around for a very, very long time & it gives you control over how you trade with the world. It gives you independence.

If you are a customer, pay with cash. If you are a shop owner, remove those ridiculous signs that ask people to pay by card. Cash is a legal tender, it is our right to pay with cash. Banks are making it increasingly difficult to lodge cash & that has nothing to do with a virus.

Please stop believing everything you hear on the TV. Politics & greed is what is wrong with the world; not those who are trying to alert you to the reality.
Please pay with cash & please say no to a cashless society while you still have a choice.

You can get crypto currency in any flavour ranging from open for all to see ledgers to untraceable washed 'cash' to buy whatever you want on the darkweb. You get to be your own bank and that pesky inflation and the CB printing presses won't dilute your value.

What you won't get is the safety nets that come from government regulation and compliance. If someone hacks your life savings, it's gone baby, gone.

If you don't trust your banks it's because you don't trust your government.
If you don't trust your government vote for someone you do trust.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

I will make one point: cashless allows greedy arseholes that run service establishments to nick the tips.

I always make a point of leaving zero tip when paying by card and leaving cash on the table in an attempt at making sure that doesn't happen.

    Cut and pasted from where?
The nonsense about kids not getting money from grandparents. The kids get 'cards' on the app from the relies all the time with money attached.
