10-foot great white shark kills surfer in Australia

SYDNEY (AP) — A 60-year-old surfer was attacked and killed by a 3-meter (10-foot) great white shark off the coast of northern New South Wales state on Sunday, officials said.

The man received a bite to the back of his thigh and was brought to the shore by other surfers who had fought off the shark, a surf rescue group, Surf Life Saving NSW, said in a statement. The victim, from Tugun just over the state border in Queensland, received first aid on the shore but died on the beach.

“A shark biologist assessed photographs and confirmed a white shark was responsible for the fatal attack,” the state’s Department of Primary Industries said.

New South Wales Ambulance Inspector Terence Savage said it was a “dreadful” situation for everyone involved.

“When you get a call to attend a shark attack, you never really know the full extent of the damage until you get on scene,” he said. “They did everything they could to try and save his life, but despite their best efforts, were unable to do so.”

Nearby beaches were cleared of swimmers and surfers and will remain closed for 24 hours.

Kingscliff resident Stuart Gonsal had just arrived at the beach ready for a surf, when he found out about the fatal attack.

“We came down and we hadn’t got in the water and police were immediately hauling people in,” Gonsal told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio. “We found out there was a fatal shark attack on the south side of the rock wall. We were going to get in, we’re not going to now for sure.”

It was the third fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

In January, a diver was killed near Esperance off the Western Australia state coast. In April, a shark fatally mauled a 23-year-old wildlife worker on the Great Barrier Reef.

'Tis a big fucker indeed. It's a shame that they will probably end up killing it. After all, the surfer was intruding in its habitat, not the other way around.

We know it was a white shark, do we know if the surfer was white or a 'person of colour', is this a race issue?

I agree mate. I also agree that it's a real shame that the shark will now be killed for simply being a shark in it's natural environment.

The shark did not abide by social distancing rules and needs to be punished for such.

Are there social distancing rules pertaining to you and your food?

If so I've just violated social distancing rules between me and a plate of Beef Chow Mein.

^ For those who don't know 'Flake' is shark with Aussies eat often as the 'Fish' in their Fish and chips.

Firm white flesh with little or no bones.

Perhaps a tickle under the fin would also have worked.

Number of shark fatalities per year is an average of 4. Number of sharks killed by us per year is estimated to be 100 million.

Sharks have a skeleton that is made primarily of cartilage rather than bone so no surprise there.

Thankfully Human Leg Soup isn't that popular, outside of Papua New Guinea.

I always thought that our environment was in the sea and on the land. I'm not for 'their' environment. So what is 'our' environment. A city, the country, the desert. Maybe it's Mrs Higgins biscuit shop?

    We are all animals.

The area we can live in unaided.

Which is actually rather small. Given that the planet is mostly sea, where we die pretty quickly if left out there alone and unaided, most start to experience Altitude Sickness at 2,500m. We haven't actually evolved that well for the planet's environment and aren't really that adaptable.

Well I would have thought that hoomans are very adaptable. Look where some people live.

We live on land, but the sea is very much a part of some peoples lives. Especially some Island nations, where if they didn't have the sea they would starve.

So, it's living unaided eh? Who made these rules?

Not in the sea and not at an altitude above 5,100m.
