Russia Begins Building First Stealth Bomber: Report

Russia has begun manufacturing the prototype of its first strategic stealth bomber, state news agency TASS reported on Tuesday, as the country presses ahead with the modernization of its military.

Quoting defense industry sources, TASS said the state-controlled United Aircraft Corporation was overseeing the project. It said material was being shipped for the project and that work had begun on the cockpit of the bomber, known as the PAK DA. “The final assembly of the entire machine should be complete in 2021,” one of the sources told TASS.

Stealth bombers are designed to evade radar detection while carrying large amounts of weaponry.

Russian officials have revealed few details of the project, though last year Deputy Defence Minister Alexei Krivoruchko said aircraft maker Tupolev — which is part of United Aircraft Corporation — was in charge.

Reached by AFP, United Aircraft Corporation spokesman Sergei Loktionov declined to comment on the report. Tupolev also did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Reports have said the plane will feature a flying wing design similar to U.S. stealth bombers, fly at subsonic speeds and carry strategic cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons.

The U.S. Air Force’s B-2 stealth bombers are among the world’s most feared aircraft.

China is working on its own long-range stealth bomber — the Xian H-20 — with the South China Morning Post reporting this month that it could make its first public appearance at an airshow in November.

HooHoo will be squealing in delight.

What's the betting it looks suspiciously like its American cousin?

    The B2-ski to Concorde-ski?

Mind you look how that turned out.

An antique plane that can lift large payloads. Useful sometimes.

I don't think it lifted large payloads. Even Concorde, from which it was copied, only had the seating capacity of a smaller 737.

Interesting. I didn't know it had much of a career after its short lived passenger service.

I was thinking about another plane. They still sometimes use a soviet design heavy lift cargo plane for some very large payloads. Seems that is not a Tupolew.

    World's Second Largest Aircraft
Workers unload space hardware from an Antonov An-124, the world's second largest aircraft. The plane landed at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on Thursday, August 9, carrying a payload fairing for the European Ariane 5 rocket. The fairing is designed to protect a mission's payload from the thermal, aerodynamic and acoustic effects of launch and flight through the atmosphere.

The fairing was transported to NASA Glenn Research Center's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio. It will be tested in a simulated space environment in the Space Power Facility, the world's largest vacuum chamber.

They must have got the schematics from the internet, or maybe from the Pentagon.

A departure from the standard Russian military doctrine of victory through superior numbers and Nuclear weapons. Now they're playing catch up to the Yanks & Chinks. Maybe they got hold of the same designs of the F-35 that the Chinks did.

The company was established in 1946 at the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association as the top-secret Soviet Research and Design Bureau No. 153 (OKB-153). It was headed by Oleg Antonov and specialised in turboprop military transport aircraft. The task was to create an agricultural aircraft CX-1 (An-2), the first flight of which occurred on August 31, 1947. The An-2 biplane was a major achievement of this period, with hundreds of these aircraft still operating as of 2013.[6] In addition to this biplane and its modifications, a small series of gliders A-9 and A-10 were created and built in the pilot production in Novosibirsk. In 1952, the Bureau was relocated to Kiev, a city with a rich aviation history and an aircraft-manufacturing infrastructure restored after the destruction caused by World War II.

No need to play catch-up, being tooled up is good enough.
