Airbnb slashes staff in effort to ride out pandemic

Home-sharing platform Airbnb said Tuesday it will slash one fourth of its workforce — some 1,900 people — as the coronavirus pandemic crushes the travel industry.

The cuts are needed for the San Francisco-based company to survive until people start traveling anew, Airbnb co-founder and chief executive Brian Chesky said in a blog post.

“We are collectively living through the most harrowing crisis of our lifetime, and as it began to unfold, global travel came to a standstill,” Chesky said.

Airbnb explained that it will try to soften the blow with benefits including providing 12 months of health insurance to laid-off workers.

The job cuts will be spread about the company’s global operations, with a goal of tuning a more focused business strategy that returns to Airbnb “roots” of being a platform for sharing homes and local experiences, according to Chesky.

“Teams across all of Airbnb will be impacted,” Chesky said.

“Many teams will be reduced in size based on how well they map to where Airbnb is headed.”

Airbnb added that it will cut investments in transportation, hotels or other endeavors that do not directly support hosts whose homes are listed on the platform.

Airbnb in April announced it was taking a billion dollars in new investment to endure and, it hopes, thrive in a travel world transformed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The fresh resources will enable the San Francisco-based company to invest in its community of “hosts” as well as local experiences provided along with stays in homes, Chesky said at the time.

Airbnb planned to focus particularly on long-term stays, from students needing housing to remote workers, building on a rising demand the platform has seen as people self-isolate during the pandemic.

The company recently announced new cleaning “protocols” to reassure travelers. Airbnb is also helping hosts with financial losses after guests cancelled travel plans.

I thought these internet platforms didn't need that many staff.

Several years ago I rented an AirBnB condo for three months.

Owner had a reasonable business going, owning at the time, I think, four condos around greater Bangkok at the time, he had just bought his newest close to Soi Cowboy, with a plan of using the profits to buy another condo every year or two.

Wonder how that plan worked out and what his situation is today. Imagine he now has six or seven unrented condos for sale. Best laid plans of keeping all your eggs in one basket.

I've used them a couple of times on business trips and got really nice apartments in excellent locations at half the price of a hotel.

    What's your beef with them?

    That's fair enough.

I noticed in Edinburgh last year that the natives were getting a bit restless about that aspect, although tbh they were getting restless about too many tourists in general.

They serve a purpose harry. For example i wouldnt book airbnb anywhere in asia instead i prefer hotel or resort style coz its cheap accomadation innit as im usually with her indoors and the nippers. But travelling to australia airbnb is unbeatable value for a family. Simply cant be spending crazy money on hotels.

the bangkok condo market (and others like worldwide) would implode.

and FWIW, IMO you'd have to be crazy to stay in an airbnb now.

Nigel lives in Frinton on Sea, Essex. That's around 400 miles away from Edinburgh.

You can bet there are lots of airbnb hosts closing down their listings too. I know a guy in Tokyo who has 5 empty listings he is paying rent on. Ouch.

    Airbnb is brilliant.

Has changed the way people travel. Much easier to get a down to earth experience. There are Japanese families who own beautiful traditional homes looking over lakes with Mt.Fuji in the background. Soak in a hot spring and get served sake and local food as you take in the view. This was not possible before airbnb, unless you stay in an expensive hotel or inn ~ but you know, that's same same but different ...

I've never been one interested in this homeshare shit, I like my privacy.

The advantage of AirBnB is getting a nice apartment or even a house at the fraction of a price of a hotel and, as I've found the few times I've used it, in much more convenient locations than the nearest decent hotels.

There is a market for share accommodation . Young people mostly I would say. Not my thing either. You can rent entire 8 bedroom homes or a tent in someone's backyard - up to you.
