    Canada bans assault weapons

I'm sure the NRA and all those trumpanzees will be soooooo triggered.

But congratulations to Canada on a very sensible piece of legislation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday that the government would immediately ban the use and trade of roughly 1,500 different kinds of assault-style weapons, including the AR-15 variant that has been used in many U.S. mass shootings, the Globe and Mail reports.

The move comes in response to a murder rampage in Nova Scotia that left 22 people dead.

    https://politicalwire.com/2020/05/02/trudeau-announces-assault-weapons-ban/
And before any of our resident trumpanzees start snivelling the usual NRA bollocks....

May 1, 2020 – With the Trudeau government poised to ban some “assault style” weapons, it finds significant support for a change first promised by the Liberals in 2015.

The results of the latest public opinion survey from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute show an overwhelming majority – nearly four-in-five – support a complete prohibition on civilian possession of the types of weapons used in the Montreal Massacre in 1989, and most recently, the rampage of an assault weapon-carrying murderer who killed 22 people in Nova Scotia last month.

Significantly, two-thirds (65%) strongly support such a move, giving federal policy makers a clear mandate to go forward.

It was anything but legislation, it was an order in council from cabinet. Legislation has to go through parliament. So, basically, an undemocratic order. The anti gun crowd can cheer all it wants without realizing a comparison would be had the conservatives won a minority government and used the same law to ban abortions.

Canada has very strict rules dealing with the ownership of these weapons, and the Novia Scotia shooter would not have been granted a license to own them, so he got them from the USA. This law will do nothing to stop that.

    Trudeau also said this:

"You don't need an AR-15 to bring down a deer,"

Most deer hunters would find that idiotic, as an AR-15 round is not nearly lethal enough to bring down a deer instantly and you would be following a blood trail for hours until it bleeds out.

In order to own one in Canada you need to have no criminal record for violent crime, and take a two day course to get your RPAL. You are then run through an intensive background check which will likely take up to 5 months to be approved.

You have to keep the gun locked in a safe separate from the ammunition.

You have to be a member of a gun range and give a detailed map showing the route from your home to the gun range and are not allowed to deviate from it. Other transport of the weapon is not allowed.

The maximum size of magazine allowed is 5 bullets.

Every day your name is run through the CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) database and checked against all crimes or current police investigations.

I suspect a lot of the people in Harry's poll don't know that, and are as naive about guns as Trudeau clearly is.

As I posted a few posts up, this ban would not have prevented that. He didn't have a license and got his guns from the States.

Well its time for a change and if the US wasn't so pro guns, change would possibly happen there, but after so many senseless mass murders nothing has changed.

from what I have read, two long guns were used in the mass shooting in NS and they are now banned.

"Canada’s public safety minister said two long-guns used in the Nova Scotia mass shooting are included in the list of more than 1,500 “military-style assault weapons” now banned in Canada.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair told reporters Friday the firearms used by the gunman who killed 22 people are covered by the ban, but did not specify the models. He said it’s the responsibility of the RCMP to release that information.
“Every firearm begins legally and then moves into an illegal market,” Blair said."

So most deer hunters would agree with him then.

he got them from the USA. This law will do nothing to stop that.
They are dealing with that as well.

...when Parliament resumes, the Liberal government will take further action to tackle illegal smuggling of firearms at the Canada-U.S. border and new measures to control ammunition and large-capacity magazines.
    As for....

I suspect a lot of the people in Harry's poll don't know that, and are as naive about guns as Trudeau clearly is.
I suspect you should have a pint of bitter with your sour grapes. Canadians don't want these weapons in the hands of the mentally impaired, and that's usually where they are anyway, especially in America.

a comparison would be had the conservatives won a minority government and used the same law to ban abortions.
And that's horseshit, because 80% of Canadians agree with banning these weapons, so it is not as if the current administration are going against public opinion.

I think that will be coming, the crackdown on illegal guns imported from the US. It is a step in the right direction no matter.

Pretty soon the only country dumb enough to give assault-style weapons to poorly educated tiny-dicked psychopaths will be the US.

Naive? He isn't taking any chances for any other mass shootings with assault rifles.... I believe you chose the wrong word. After all the crap that Canada and Trudeau has had to endure recently (NS mass shooting, 1 killed, 6 missing Military personnel in the helicopter crash, Covid, etc), I'd say he's doing a pretty fine job for only being in office five years or less.

For what it's worth; The "AR" in AR-15 is short for "Armalite Rifle", not "Assault Rifle".

This buyback plan they have will cost upwards of a billion dollars. During a recession. They would have better results in stopping shootings by using that money to stop the smuggling and crack down on gangs first.

And if your poll is correct Harry, why didn't they actually bring it to parliament for a vote? What were they afraid of?

Maybe Canadians remember their last bit of gun control that was projected to cost 2 million, and ended up being over 2 billion dollars, and then eventually scrapped.

Canada isn't the States, and not all gun owners are conservatives.

^At least Trudeau is doing something about it. I am very anti-guns and I would never want to live in the US because of the ease of getting guns and ammo. It is common sense that the less available these assault rifles are, the less mass violence will occur. I mean looking at mass shootings in Canada, compared to the US is like comparing apples and oranges.

The overwhelming majority of gun deaths in Canada are caused by handguns, mostly illegal ones, and Trudeau didn't ban those. And assault rifles are illegal and have been for some time. The ones he banned just look like them, but are incapable of selective fire. But you probably don't know that.
