Canada shooting: Gunman kills at least 18 in Nova Scotia

fffA gunman disguised as a policeman killed at least 18 people, including a female Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, in the worst mass shooting in Canada's modern history.

The 12-hour rampage started late on Saturday and ended with a car chase.
Police said the suspect shot people at different locations in Nova Scotia, many of them randomly. He was killed in a confrontation with police. He was reported to have been driving what looked like a police car. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the attack as "a tragedy". "Violence of any kind has no place in Canada. We stand with you and we grieve with you," he said, addressing the nation on Monday. Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil told reporters this was "one of the most senseless acts of violence in our province's history".

What do we know about what happened?

At about 23:32 local time on Saturday (02:32 GMT on Sunday), the RCMP said officers were responding to a "firearms complaint" at a home in the small town of Portapique and advised residents to lock themselves indoors.
The officers found "several casualties" inside and outside the home, but did not find the suspect. A neighbour told CBC News that he saw three properties were also on fire in the area at the time.

At 08:54 on Sunday, the RCMP said there was an "active shooter investigation" and that there were several victims. It identified the suspect as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, who owned three properties in Portapique.
RCMP officers continued pursuing Mr Wortman for hours, following a series of crime scenes that police said were "scattered across the province" and which they are still working to piece together. Mr Wortman was later seen in the Glenholme and Debert areas, east of Portapique, driving what the appeared to be an RCMP vehicle and possibly wearing an RCMP uniform.
"There's one difference between his car and our Royal Canadian Mounted Police vehicles: the car # [registration plate]. The suspect's car is 28B11, behind rear passenger window. If you see 28B11, call 911 immediately," the force tweeted.

Mr Wortman then changed cars and was seen driving southbound along on Highway 102 from the Brookfield area in a silver Chevrolet Tracker, according to the RCMP. At 11:40, the RCMP said that Mr Wortman had been taken into custody. It later emerged that he was killed after being intercepted by officers at a petrol station in Enfield, about 92km south of Portapique. Witnesses reported seeing a body lying on the ground.

Completely senseless violence, a madman was on the loose (dead now). They are still trying to count the bodies at all of the locations the shooter went to randomly shooting and lighting fire to houses.

I first heard about this listening to LBC in the middle of the (UK) night. And nary a mention since.

I assume it didn't kill as many people as the bug so it didn't merit too much front page.

It has been all over the news here today and yesterday.

CCC: I am not sure.. they don't know at the moment they are investigating. The killer was shot as he was a loose cannon.

Trudeau promises gun-control legislation after deadliest shooting in Canadian history

    By
    Amanda Coletta

    April 20, 2020 at 6:40 p.m. EDT

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that his government would move ahead on the gun-control legislation he promised during last year’s election campaign after the deadliest shooting in his country’s history, though it was not clear how soon he would do so.

“I can say that we were on the verge of introducing legislation to ban assault-style weapons across this country,” he told reporters. “It was interrupted when the pandemic caused Parliament to be suspended, but we have every intention of moving forward on that measure, and potentially other measures, when Parliament returns.”

Authorities say a single gunman shot and killed at least 18 people in rural Nova Scotia during a rampage Saturday and Sunday before he died. On Monday, a coalition of gun-control groups implored Public Safety Minister Bill Blair to ban the new sale of military-style assault weapons.

While we appreciate the capacity for substantive policy change is difficult at this moment,” the groups wrote to Blair, “we implore you to take one decisive, achievable action right now. … As has been well documented, these guns pose an excessive risk to public safety and serve no reasonable purpose.”
Authorities have not said what firearms suspect Gabriel Wortman used in the shootings or how he obtained them.

Blair said he intended to introduce gun-control legislation “as quickly as possible.”

Rod Giltaca, chief executive of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, said it was too soon to debate guns.

“Just shy of 24 hours past the tragedy in Nova Scotia, the gun-control lobby is leveraging this community's suffering for their own political gain,” he said. “No law in this country could have stopped a madman with this level of determination and resources.”

Giltaca said “there will be time to debate the details of this event when we know more,” but now “is the time to support those affected by this senseless tragedy.”

18 confirmed killed in Canada's deadliest mass shooting, but officials expect to discover more victims

TORONTO — Police fanned out across more than a dozen crime scenes Monday after a rampage by a gunman disguised as a police officerleft at least 18 dead and homes in smoldering ruins in rural communities across Nova Scotia — the deadliest mass shooting in Canada’s history. Officials said the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, also died in the weekend attack. Authorities did not provide a motive for the killings.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told a news conference Monday that police expect to find more victims once they are able to comb through all the crime scenes, some of which were houses set ablaze as victims were inside, adhering to government calls to stay at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Leather said police teams were spread out at 16 locations across central and northern Nova Scotia. He said some of the victims knew Wortman, and some didn’t. “We’re relatively confident we’ve identified all the crime scenes,” Leather said. “We have had five structure fires, most of those being residences, and we believe there may be victims still within the remains of those homes which burnt to the ground.”

The dead included a police officer. Another was wounded by gunfire and was recovering at home, Leather said.
The 18 innocent lives lost will be remembered throughout Canada’s history,” Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted how close-knit the small province of Nova Scotia is.

“The vast majority of Nova Scotians will have a direct link with one or more of the victims. The entire province and country is grieving right now as we come to grips with something that is unimaginable,” Trudeau told a news conference.

“The pandemic will prevent us from mourning together in person, but a vigil will be held virtually to celebrate the lives of the victims,” Trudeau added, saying it would take place Friday night through a Facebook group. Trudeau asked the media to avoid mentioning the name of the assailant or showing his picture.

“Do not give this person the gift of infamy,” he said.all The 12-hour rampage began late Saturday in the rural town of Portapique, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) north of Halifax, where police warned residents to lock their doors and stay in their basements as the attack unfolded. The town, like all of Canada, had been adhering to government advice to remain at home because of the pandemic and most of the victims were inside when the attack began.Several bodies were later found inside and outside one house on Portapique Beach Road, the street where the suspect lived, authorities said.

Bodies were also found at other locations within about a 30-mile (50-kilometer) area from the neighborhood where the shootings began, and authorities believe the shooter may have targeted his first victims but then began attacking randomly. Authorities said the gunman wore a police uniform and made his car look like a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser.

“His ability to move around the province undetected was surely greatly benefited by the fact that he had a vehicle that looked identical in every way to a marked police car,” Leather said, adding that the gunman was also either wearing a police uniform or very good copy.

He said at one point the suspect was forced to abandon his car and then carjacked other vehicles to continue to “circulate around the province steps ahead of our investigators.”Authorities believe he acted alone. RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki said he was not well known to police and no note from the suspect has been found. She said police were still studying the crime scenes to determine what weapons were used.

According to his high school yearbook, Wortman long had a fascination with the Mounties. “Gabe’s future may include being an RCMP officer,” his yearbook profile said.
The dead officer was identified as Constable Heidi Stevenson, a mother of two and a 23-year veteran of the force. Two health care workers at local nursing homes were also among those killed, according to Von Canada, a long term health care company, which identified them as Kristen Beaton, a continuing care assistant, and Heather O’Brien, a licensed practical nurse.

O’Brien’s daughter, Darcy Dobson, wrote in a Facebook post that, “A Monster murdered my Mother.”
“Murdered her, without a second thought. The pain comes and goes in waves. I feel like I’m outside of my own body. This can’t be real. At 9:59 am she sent her last text message to our family group chat. By 10:15 she was gone.”

School teacher Lisa McCully, who worked at a local elementary school, also was among the dead. “Our hearts are broken along with those of her colleagues and students at Debert Elementary,” Nova Scotia Teachers Union President President Paul Wozney said.

Police initially said Wortman had been arrested Sunday at a gas station in Enfield, outside Halifax, but later said he had died. It was not clear how, and they did not provide further details, although one police official said that there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police at one point.

Wortman, who owned a denture practice in the city of Dartmouth, near Halifax, lived part time in Portapique, according to residents.
Atlantic Denture Clinic, the practice Wortman owned, had been closed for the past month because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Neighbor Nancy Hudson said she met Wortman about 18 years ago when he bought the property on Portapique Beach Road, which is a short walk from her home, and she and her husband used to socialize with him.

“There is another side to Gabe. He had some issues, especially with his girlfriend,” Hudson said, adding that he was obsessed and jealous. “It was a red flag.” Speaking to reporters Monday, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil said that even in the midst of such anguish now was not the time to gather together to mourn.

“We cannot forget that in the midst of this tragedy we are still fighting a deadly virus,” McNeil said. “Now more than ever we need your cooperation. It takes inner strength. The best that we can honor the victims of this tragedy is to continue to act in a way that protects our fellow Nova Scotians.”

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada. The country overhauled its gun-control laws after gunman Marc Lepine killed 14 women and himself at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique college in 1989. Before this weekend’s rampage, that had been the country’s worst mass shooting.
Trudeau said Monday his government would introduce further gun control legislation prohibiting military-style assault weapons, a measure that had already been planned before the coronavirus pandemic interrupted the current parliamentary session.e crime scenes.

    ^Yes, sadly.
Death toll in Nova Scotia mass shooting has risen to 23: RCMP | National Post

What kind of whackjob dresses up like an officer and drives a cop car look alike and goes around randomly shooting people? Some of the people he knew and others he didn't. One of the latest victims is a 17 yr old (second 17yr old dead now). The cops were tweeting this out and didn't sound any national alarm, so people didn't even know that there was this whackjob dressed up as a cop going around setting random fires and shooting people !
