iPhone charging cable: Apple could be forced to change to USB-C

Apple could be forced to change its charger cables for iPhones, for the third time, in a move that would impact millions of people worldwide.

Apple could be forced to change the iPhone cable yet again under new rules.
The tech giant may have to switch to USB-C cables — and ditch the hugely popular Lightning connector in Europe.
Apple would only be compelled to use this common charger in EU countries — but would likely do the same in the USA and globally anyway.
The EU is set to vote on the matter “at a future session”, but hasn’t confirmed a date, The Sun reports.
The switch would render current iPhone cables useless, and force fans to buy a new lead if they upgrade their handset.
The new iPhone cable would be Apple’s third in 13 years.

Apple’s first iPhones used the massive 30-pin dock connector, before the firm abruptly switched to lightning connectors in 2012.
The move made everybody’s old charging cables useless, and the same could happen again.
The EU has previously called for common chargers on phones, but now wants to enforce the ruling.
“To reduce electronic waste and make consumers’ life easier, MEPs want binding measures for chargers to fit all mobile phones and other portable devices,” the EU explained.
“A common charger should fit all mobile phones, tablets, e-book readers and other portable devices, MEPs will insist.
“According to estimates, old chargers generate more than 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year.”

If forced to create a USB-C iPhone, Apple would likely do so globally — to avoid creating different designs for non-EU countries.
Brexit is unlikely to prevent the change in the UK for the same reasons.
The most likely candidate for a new charger is USB-C.
It’s an increasingly popular type of charging and data transfer port that was launched in the middle of 2014.
The male end of the cable is a little thicker and much wider than Apple’s Lightning cables, but they largely perform the same job.
However, while Lightning ports are exclusively used on Apple devices, USB-C ports are now very common.
Most flagship Android phones now feature USB-C ports, including the Samsung Galaxy S10, Google Pixel 4, and OnePlus 7 Pro.
Apple has also adopted USB-C ports on several products, including new MacBooks and the iPad Pro.
Last year’s iPhone 11 cable also has a USB-C tip on one end, but still joins to the handset using a Lightning connector.
It’s also worth mentioning that Apple is rumoured to be adding USB-C connectors on the upcoming iPhone 12 anyway.
But Apple has previously spoken out against proposals to force common chargers across the industry.
“Regulations that would drive conformity across the type of connector built into all smartphones freeze innovation rather than encourage it,” Apple’s Claire Darmon told the EU in 2019.
“Such proposals are bad for the environment and unnecessarily disruptive for customers.
In other news, Samsung is expected to reveal the world’s first 5G tablet in a matter of weeks.
The iPhone 12 could be the thinnest ever thanks to new screen technology.
And the new phone could also see through mist and fog thanks to rumoured ‘Spectral Edge’ camera integration.

    ^ Yup, many reasons

I have two iPhones (one in NZ and one for here because of single-sim) because I use a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops and an iMac so file transferring and backing up is easy, interconnectivity when doing training and seminars is seamless . . . among other things

Everyone in our company uses Apple products - makes tech issues easier to handle

Apple won't go with USB-C. Instead, their next iPhone will have no port, just wireless connection; they save money in production and will charge the customer more...

Apple are a bunch of conts, sending out updates to slow down their older phones. They also have a controller built in to stop you using third party repairers.

The fingerprint scanner has stopped working on the iphone X I just had the screen repaired on, they also send out a battery message if thats not replaced by Apple.

Then theres the amount they want for storage on their phones and that fukkin icloud. You are better off downloading Google Photos than using that icloud.

Then theres your Apple Music and Apple TV on their phones.

    Wankers

Not really true, is it? They aren't changing the port on your existing phone FFS.

Agree with a lot you say.

When I first started using apple products in the late 90s they were superior to windows for me, as I used it for creative things - music, photoshop, movie software. iTunes was much better than the Windows equivilant - happy days.

Over the past 15 years or so, they have brought in the things you mention. constant pop ups asking me to buy icloud storage are annoying. I just had my iphone 7 update itself without me doing a thing - now it is slow and has a lot of glitches ... even freezes up sometimes.

Changing the cables again is a pain in the arse --- last time they did it, I had not long purchased speakers for my phone, which you would sit into a slot when using --- it became obsolete when i updated my phone as the new one would not fit in the slot with the new port ...

Steve Jobs would be rolling over in his grave as he was all for keeping apple products user friendly..

^ Another thing... Try using a generic iPhone lead to charge it. It stops them working properly after a while. Although Samsung do the same thing.

Imagine the underhanded shit they get up to with your data

Smart Phone chargers should be a NORM, including the batteries. Any thing else doesn't make sense.

easy to sell to gullible people, with stupid little details

^ they were always better when doing creative stuff - that is the direction they headed back in the 80s and they were better than windows if you wanted to edit movies, mix music or do computer graphics for a long time --- while windows was pegged as the computer you used for business related stuff . but with the rise of the internet in the mid - late 90s, they started playing catch up with windows , when they released the first range of iMacs --- remember them? you could buy them in orange, purple, green, etc

they were a different company back then, they lost the PC market and went into the Phone and music business, easier to be successful with the right marketing, and that's what saved them

otherwise they will have gone out of business, their software have always been crap and inferior, and MS software on Macs were always the best, that's the irony of things

Well there are sound logical reasons why it is better to drive on the left that you appear to be uninformed about. Please read and be enlightened.

What a moron. Go back to your Windows XP.

I use macOS and Windows (and z/OS) constantly.
macOS is just so much nicer than Windows.
It's just a much better polished product.

Go back to your XP thread where you belong.

You would be the last person on earth that I'd take any I.T advice from. (other than to do the exact opposite of what you recommended)

typical Mactard precious, can't take a dose of reality about this crap setup

and I am not giving you advice, you confused mactard, I am simply stating facts and you don't like and can't face those facts, so fooking what

MS Software have always been better on the Mac, Apple could never succeed in developing good software, and even MacOS X is an absurdity of an OS that only clueless idiots could appreciate

Your reality is just an illusion.
