Early reports suggest it was in flames on the way down. Someone fire a missile at it? Hardly sporting if they did it on purpose. It was a 737-800 NG, but I doubt that matters.

Iran plane crash: Ukraine International Airline jet crashes killing 176

A Ukrainian Boeing-737 carrying 176 people has crashed in Iran and officials say there is no chance of finding survivors.

Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 to Kyiv went down after taking off from Imam Khomeini airport in Tehran at 06:12 local time (02:42 GMT).

The majority of passengers were from Iran and Canada.

Ukraine's Tehran embassy initially blamed engine failure but later removed the statement.

It said any comment regarding the cause of the accident prior to a commission's inquiry was not official. Iranian media blamed technical problems and quoted an aviation official who said no emergency had been declared.

Debris and engine parts from the plane were found some 10km (6 miles) from the airport and rescue workers with face masks searched the wreckage for victims.

    Who was on board?

Among the victims were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians including all nine crew, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Britons and three Germans, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said.

It was unclear why such a large number of Canadians were on board, however the airline provides relatively inexpensive flights via Kyiv to Iran.

Sweden's foreign ministry said its embassy in Tehran was seeking further information about the crash. Foreign Minister Ann Linde said she had spoken to Mr Prystaiko.

‘One of our best planes’: Ukrainian Boeing 737 that crashed in Iran was ‘in excellent condition’ & manned by experienced crew

Nothing was wrong with the Ukraine International Airlines jet that came down in Iran with 176 on board, the company has said. It was one of the best planes in UIA’s fleet and had undergone maintenance just days before the crash.

Delivered to UIA in 2016, the Boeing 737-800 was “in excellent condition” before its last flight from Tehran to Kiev, Evgeny Dykhne, the company’s president, told reporters in Kiev, also describing the aircraft as “one of the best.”

UIA flight director Ihor Sosnovsky ruled out a pilot error, saying the ill-fated flight was manned by a reinforced crew comprising Captain Volodymyr Yaponenko, Pilot Instructor Oleksiy Naumkin and First Officer Serhiy Khomenko.
“Given their experience, it is very hard to say that something was wrong with them,” he insisted. There were six flight attendants on the plane and the entire crew had had enough rest before departing from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini airport, Sosnovsky added.

The airline had also undergone scheduled maintenance just two days before the crash on Wednesday, which killed 167 passengers and nine crew.

Most of the passengers were making connecting flights via Kiev’s Boryspil airport, the main hub of UIA. There were citizens of Iran, Canada, Germany, the UK, Sweden and Afghanistan among the victims.

UIA’s 737-800, which belongs to the troubled family of Boeing’s single-aisle, medium-haul jets, was less than four years old, according to Flightradar. Nevertheless, it was extensively used by the airline, completing up to four flights a day.

Founded in 1992 as the country’s flag carrier, UIA connects Ukraine with 38 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Although the airline describes itself as a “low-fare network carrier,” it hadn’t lost single plane in accidents or incidents in recent decades.

Today’s tragedy in Iran, which left 176 people dead, was UIA’s first crash, breaking its relatively good safety record.

It also represented more bad news for Boeing, which is struggling to repair its reputation after its newest 737 MAX plane killed 346 people in two separate crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia last year. The manufacturer has been accused of failing to inform pilots and industry stakeholders about a new, potentially dangerous flight control feature on the MAX planes.

In the wake of the tragedy, the airline suspended all flights to and from Imam Khomeini. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky directed the government to launch an inquiry and to “consider all possible versions [of the crash].”

Iran 'mistakenly shot down Ukraine jet' - US media

Iran mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian plane that crashed on Wednesday near Tehran with 176 people on board, US media report.

US officials say they believe the Ukrainian International Airlines Boeing 737-800 was hit by a missile, CBS says.

Ukraine earlier said it was examining whether a missile strike brought down the aircraft - but Iran ruled this out.

The crash came just hours after Iran carried out missile strikes on two airbases housing US forces in Iraq.

CBS News quoting US intelligence said a satellite detected infrared "blips" of two missile launches, followed by another blip of an explosion.

Drop in some anti Iran militia men around the airport.

Provide them with a well oiled shoulder fired missile from the CIA

They wait around until the Iran counter attack starts. Shoot down an aircraft as it takes off.

Iran's reputation gets completely shredded by the international community for "accidentally" shooting down a civil aircraft.

Europe slides in behind the US and stops all cooperation with Iran.

Just like MH-17 in Ukraine. Similar to MetroJet crash over Egypt in 2015.

The WarZone , a Pentagon approved site said this about the missles

Iran choosing targets based on the likelihood that the strikes would cause minimal casualties or to achieve other specific effects would indicate that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has confidence in the performance and accuracy of its extensive missile arsenal. Judging by the imagery, they have good reason to be. We already knew the latest short-range ballistic missile systems from Iran were quite accurate, but the pinpoint targeting of key aviation facilities is very telling.

Shoulder fired missiles are unlikely to be heat seeking and that rules out your theory.

Shoulder fired? GTFO with that nonsense. This was a Russian supplied missile the same as brought down the Malaysian airliner.

    Lol

You are clueless. Positively clueless. Shoulder fired missiles are made for just this exact operation. Taking out aircraft that are landing or taking off from air strips

    Oh yes.

How convenient eh ? How perfect. Get the savage sub human Russians in on it too. Hell, lets sanction Russia on this one too. Man are the Americans ever lucky that Iran managed to shoot a civilian aircraft out of the sky on their big day of retaliation.

Iran deliberately hit Apache helicopter hangers on the sprawling US base because that is what was used to kill their general. So that the attack would qualify under section 52 of the UN code on retaliation. And that's what they did. They also filed the necessary paperwork with the UN for this counter attack.

But oh hey there's a civilian airliner. One of our highly accurate missiles went and hit that !

Jesus Christ. Iran just admitted that it accidentally shot the jet down. I just wouldn't have believed it if they didnt admit it. Holy Christ. Luck is not on Irans side.

Anyway it was still a casualty of war. A war started by the USA.

They killed the Iranian General. Iran had to respond. Which it did. Through it all, 176 people were killed. I'd argue that the blood is on the US's hands. It all just goes to show how terrible war is and why it should be avoided.

The WarZone had a good write up on what probably happened.

I don't think most people comprehend just how unique the situation was and had been for those tasked with defending Iranian airspace at the time of the supposed shootdown. For nearly a week, Iran's air defense network had been on high alert. Following the airstrikes on Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and theassassination of Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani, the biggest crisis between the U.S. and the country in decades was unfolding. The rhetoric between the two bitter foes had quickly reached new heights with direct threats from President Trump about striking 52 target sets, some of which could include cultural sites important to the Iranian people and regime. American military might, including heavy airpower, was pouring in the region. A spark could ignite a war at any time—even one caused by a relatively minor miscalculation.

After a week of being on extreme alert already wearing down their effectiveness, and with their country having just launched a truly unprecedented ballistic missile strike on U.S. forces in Iraq, even though the American president swore vengeance if such a strike were to occur, the stress and fatigue levels were likely very palpable. In fact, the ballistic missiles flew into Iraq at roughly 3AM local time and dawn was coming soon when the 737 went down three hours later. That makes for a long, very tense night after a long tense week, and if the U.S. were to retaliate, those weapons would arrive before sunrise. For the Iranian air defenders, the window of vulnerability was closing, but as a result, the risk of such a strike was also being compressed into that shrinking timeframe and magnified.

For the personnel sitting in that cramped road-mobile air defense system on the western approaches to Iran's capital city, which is rife with relevant targets, it would be an immeasurably nerve-racking situation that they would found themselves in around 6AM on January 8th, 2020.
