Maybe the occupants of the plane were spies from the west.

Hey look. A cruise missile is taking off from Kohmaini International Airport. It's following the same path as 10 other flights tonight. Let's get radar lock on it , and shoot it down.

^ Heightened tension following an attack on 2 US air bases in Iraq. An expectation that an attack is imminent, especially with a breakdown in comms, possibly due to some jamming activity by the US. A plane that takes off late and shows up on a scan when it shouldn't. All sorts of possibilities could have led to this unfortunate incident.

More silver linings in this disaster.

The Iranian population are demonstrating against the regime.

Anything that weakens the Islamic religious regime and puts more distance in between them and nuclear weapons is good news for the world.

    ----

Iran's police shoot at crowds protesting against Government's denial of Ukrainian plane shootdown

Iranian security forces have reportedly fired live ammunition and tear gas at demonstrators protesting against the Islamic Republic's initial denial it shot down a Ukrainian jetliner.
    Key points:

An online video showed crowds of demonstrators fleeing shots fired by police
Tehran's police chief General Hossein Rahimi denied his officers opened fire
Crowds had been protesting against Iran's initial denial it shot down a Ukrainian jetliner

Videos sent to the New York-based Centre for Human Rights in Iran and later verified by The Associated Press showed a crowd of demonstrators fleeing as a tear gas canister landed among them.

The chief of police in the Iranian capital of Tehran, Hossein Rahimi, said officers are under orders to show restraint towards protesters.

He has denied police used live ammunition against demonstrators earlier this week, despite videos of the protests posted on social media in which gunshots can be heard.

People coughed while struggling to escape the fumes, with one woman calling out in Farsi: "They fired tear gas at people! Azadi Square. Death to the dictator."

Another video shot in the aftermath shows a woman being carried away, leaving a bloody trail.

People are seen around her crying out that she was shot in the leg with live ammunition.

"Oh my God, she's bleeding nonstop," one person shouts. Another shouts: "Bandage it."

Photos and video after the incident showed pools of blood on the footpath.

However, Tehran's police chief General Hossein Rahimi later denied his officers opened fire.

"Police treated people who had gathered with patience and tolerance," General Rahimi told Iranian media.

"Police did not shoot in the gatherings since broad-mindedness and restraint has been the agenda of the police forces of the capital."

However, uniformed police officers were just one arm of Iran's security forces who were out in force for the demonstrations.

Riot police in black uniforms and helmets gathered earlier on Sunday in Vali-e Asr Square, at Tehran University and at other landmarks.

Revolutionary Guard members patrolled the city on motorbikes, and plainclothes security men were also out in force.

In November the guard was accused of opening fire on people protesting against government-set petrol price rises in violence that reportedly left more than 300 people dead.

So we are all regime changers again eh Looper. I supported the Iraq war and it was a mistake. But it looks like you are grabbing onto these flimsy overly simple narratives again.

Isn't it strange how Iraq's military would not fight and would run away and disband when things got tough. And isis took advantage of this. That's because the US trained up a totally artificial army. The men that made up the army didn't believe in anything. It was only after Iran got involved, that the Iraqi army started believing in something. And then it took the fight to isis and stabilized the country a bit.

Maybe, just maybe , this "regime" in Iran isn't just a regime. But maybe its a real living breathing polity of some sort. A Shiia Muslim polity. And they are always going to be around. So believing that you can eradicate them is pointless and just wrong.

I think this whole situation is more complicated than you are giving it credit for Looper.

My point is we don't have any evidence to support the Iranian claim of mistaken identity nor do we have any actual evidence to support 'incompetence.' We know nothing for certain other than a plane on a scheduled flight that was filled with people took off from an airport roughly 4-hours after the last salvo of missiles were fired and did not deviate from the same basic flight path that no less than eight planes traveled during that same 4-hour window all without incident.

Could have been a mistake, could have been incompetence and it could have been something more nefarious - as if almost 200 dead bodies isn't nefarious enough. None of those theories is supported by anymore evidence than the other two. We simply do not know why that plane was shot down. We will know more as the investigation moves forward.

Perhaps, somebody can point to a country where 100% of population is happy with their regime?
Especially such country, where the population has been troubled by the kind help of sanctions for generations.

BTW, did the US population demonstrate when their USS Vincennes shot ("mistakenly") the Iranian plane with 290 people?

New Video Shows 2 Iranian Missiles Striking Doomed Passenger Jet

Ok this is some sick shit. Its a NYT video so you have to click on the link. There was 2 shots. One first injures the plane then there's a 30 second maybe? pause, then a kill shot. This is mass murder. And no. Nothing is accidental about it. In my opinion.

Iran plane downing: Person who filmed video 'arrested'
Iran plane downing: Person who filmed video arrested - BBC News

Iran says it has arrested the person who filmed the footage showing a Ukrainian passenger plane being shot down by a missile.

It is believed the person being detained will face charges related to national security.

Flight PS752 was brought down after it took off from Tehran on Wednesday last week, killing all 176 people on board.

Iran has said it was shot down by accident and announced the arrest of several people over the incident.

President Hassan Rouhani said his country's investigation would be overseen by a "special court".

"This will not be a regular and usual case. The whole world will be watching this court," he said in a speech.

Mr Rouhani also stressed that the "tragic event" should not be blamed on one individual.

Qatar to offer Iran $3 billion for Ukrainian plane victims
Qatari Emir makes surprise visit to Tehran to offer compensation for 176 passengers killed after plane is unintentionally shot down by Iranian missiles.

Iranian activists criticised the Qatari attempt to help the Iranian regime, describing it as "covering up for a crime”.

DOHA - Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is in Tehran on Sunday amid regional tensions following the US killing of Iranian commander and Iran accidentally shooting down a Ukrainian jetliner.

According to several sources, the reason for the visit is for the Emir of Qatar to offer President Hassan Rouhani $3 billion in compensation for the 176 passengers who lost their lives following Iran’s admission that it shot down the Ukraine-bound aircraft after mistaking it for a ‘hostile target’.

In a statement, Sheikh Tamim was quoted by the Iranian presidency as saying that "Qatar will not forget Iran's position on the sanctions imposed on Doha,” in a tacit nod of acknowledgment for past Iranian support. .

Despite being close to the United States, even hosting Washington’s largest Middle East base, Qatar also enjoys strong ties with Iran, with whom it shares the world’s largest gas field.

Doha’s relationship with Tehran has been a primary contributor to tensions with former Gulf allies the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Sheikh Tamim is set to meet with President Hassan Rouhani and other top Iranian leaders to discuss regional affairs and bilateral issues.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani reportedly called for a peaceful solution that would lead to de-escalation during a visit to Tehran in the immediate aftermath of the US strike on January 3.

    Iranians in uproar

Following Saturday’s admittance of guilt, the Iranian regime now faces uproar at home, where scores of protesters gathered for a second day to voice anger and chant slogans against authorities.

"They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here," protesters who had gathered in the street outside a university in Tehran chanted.

Iranian activists criticised the Qatari attempt to help the Iranian regime, describing it as "covering up for a crime”.

A ceremony in mourning of those who lost their lives in the plane accident quickly turned into a protest late on Saturday, with police having to disperse crowds using tear gas,.

Police also briefly detained the British ambassador to Iran, Rob Macaire, who attended the vigil without knowing that it would transform into an anti-government protest.

He was accused of inciting anger among demonstrators, before later tweeting ‘Can confirm I wasn’t taking part in any demonstrations!’.

Downing Street called the arrest a ‘flagrant violation of international law’.

The new surveillance footage obtained by The Associated Press showing the missile fire was filmed off a monitor by a mobile phone.

Hence the person being detained facing charges related to national security.

It appears to be taken near the town of Bidkaneh, northwest of Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport.

The footage corresponds with AP reporting, appears genuine and matches geographic features of the area. The date in the upper right-hand corner of the video appears to correspond to Iran's Persian calendar. It also explains how so many people filmed the shoot down: The first explosion drew their attention and their filming mobile phones to the predawn sky.

That was the first video. The missile attack on the US was 6 hours before that btw

Nobody has been arrested for the 2nd video. It could be security cam footage
