Marcus Stoinis fined for homophobic slur against Renegades' Kane Richardson

Melbourne Stars all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been fined $7,500 for using a homophobic slur against an opposition player during the Melbourne derby versus the Renegades at the MCG on Saturday night.

    Key points:

Stoinis made the slur against Melbourne Renegades' Kane Richardson in the Big Bash
This is the second such offence this season, after Victoria's James Pattinson was suspended for a match for personal abuse in a Sheffield Shield game in November
Pattinson's suspension came for a third offence, whereas Stoinis's incident was his first infraction

Stoinis hit a match-winning knock of 68 not out off 55 balls, but after the match he did not challenge a charge of breaching Cricket Australia's code of conduct for an incident involving Renegades' paceman Richardson.

Stoinis was found guilty of a level-two breach for personal abuse aimed at Richardson while Stoinis was batting in the Stars' eight-wicket win over their crosstown rivals.

When the match ended, umpires Gerard Abood and Phillip Gillespie spoke to Stoinis and then Richardson, before reporting the breach to match referee Daryl Harper.

Stoinis later fronted a hearing, accepted the charge without challenge and was fined.

Cricket Australia's head of integrity and security, Sean Carroll, said the decision to hand Stoinis a level-two breach and fine him was the appropriate course of action.

"The behaviour in this matter falls short of the standards we expect and we have acted accordingly," Carroll said.

"There is no place for it in the game."

Stoinis issued an apology in a statement after the hearing.

"I got caught in the moment and took it too far," the 30-year-old said.

"I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and to the umpires.

"I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty."

The penalty leaves the BBL's leading run scorer free to play in his team's clash with Sydney Thunder on Wednesday.

The 3 things I want to know are

    1. What did he say? if we are supposed to start watching our language for fear of fines then we need to know what is considered fineable. I have googled several pages of links and not a peep about the actual 'insult' that dare not speak its name

    2. Was the other bloke gay? I would say it is worse to have a go at a poor gay fella for his homosexuality than just casually throwing around gay insults at a straight fella to bait him as is the norm in everyday life

    3. How does this stack up against non 'homophobic' insults? I am curious to know if the hyper-sensitive political atmosphere surrounding the shirt lifters politics attracts heavier fines than regular insults.

Life has clearly moved on since the last time looper played cricket.

I can remember when i use to play cricket in my twenties and when you were batting and at the bowlers end the bowler would quip "I met your wife, she's a good root", as he walked past. I'd just quip back "yours isn't".
I'd probably be fined, the bowler offered trauma counselling and we'd both be sent on a "spouse awareness" course these days.

Racism and bigotry is alive and well in Japan. Strangely, I feel more comfortable here. The PC babies in the west just make me want to cry..

Yeah, I miss the old days, when if someone called you something nasty you could just smack them in the kisser and that would be the end of it.

    Goddamn snowflakes....
