Chile combs Antarctic for missing plane with 38 aboard

The C-130 Hercules carried 17 crew members and 21 passengers, including three civilians — a 24-year-old embarking on a research project and two employees of a private company.

SANTIAGO, Chile — Searchers using planes, ships and satellites were combing Antarctic seas on Tuesday, hunting for a Chilean Air Force transport plane carrying 38 people that vanished en route to a base on the frozen continent.

Seven hours after contact was cut off, the Air Force declared the plane a loss, though there was no sign of what happened to it. The Air Force said two ships, more than a dozen planes and three satellites were being used in the search.

Officials said the plane had taken off in favorable conditions on Monday, though it was flying in an area notorious for rapidly changing conditions, with freezing temperatures and strong winds.

The C-130 Hercules carried 17 crew members and 21 passengers, including three civilians. They were en route to check on a floating fuel supply line and other equipment at the Chilean base.

President Sebastián Piñera said via Twitter that he was with his defense and interior ministers at the air force headquarters monitoring developments.

Not good when a plane disappears without so much as a distress call.

Hoho will be along soon with some bollocks about patents or the CIA or some such fucking nonsense.

Depends, would prefer to go out through lack of oxygen or sudden nosedive or explosion, than a slow descent and wee paddle in the Antarctic ocean.

Given that the Antarctic oceans have waves that regularly exceed 30 feet and have been measured up to 60+ feet, I doubt it would be all the gentle or slow.

Chile missing C-130 plane: Floating debris found

Chilean officials say they have located debris believed to be from an air force plane that went missing on Monday.

They said the wreckage was found floating 30km (19 miles) from where the C-130 Hercules cargo plane with 38 people on board last made contact.

The wreckage was spotted in a body of water known as the Drake Passage.

The plane was en route from Chile's southern city of Punta Arenas to the country's Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva base in the Antarctic.

The located debris "could be part of the remains of the sponges of the internal fuel tanks," Air Force Commander Eduardo Mosqueira told reporters on Wednesday.

Mr Mosqueira said the air force would carry out "corresponding checks" to determine whether the wreckage was from the missing plane.
