Morrison visited Kangaroo Island and stepped in the spinach again.

Taking the positive approach, he said that fortunately nobody had died, but was corrected by a local: " 2 has died so far"

May be Australia needs to eradicate the 'Firehawk Raptors'?

For thousands of years, Australia’s Aboriginal people have sung stories about sacred “firehawks” — raptors that, according to lore, use fire to hunt and introduced fire to humans. Now, merging traditional knowledge, firefighter reports and other sources, an international research team has validated at least part of these legends. Raptor species in northern Australian savannas really do spread fire to smoke out prey.
“This behavior has been widely seen — raptors flying around fires by the thousands in some cases,” said Mark Bonta, lead author on the paper published in the Journal of Ethnobiology. “They see smoke, and they’re on their way. They’re picking up a brand repeatedly until they’re able to take a fire across a road, river or firebreak created by humans. It’s intentional, as they’re going to fires and doing this because more prey are needed.”
From 2011 to 2017, Bonta — an assistant professor of earth sciences at Pennsylvania State University — and his colleagues interviewed indigenous people, fire rangers, academics and others who had witnessed firehawks carrying fire in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia. Their observations indicated black kites (Milvus migrans), whistling kites (Haliastur sphenurus) and brown falcons (Falco berigora) congregate around savanna fires, descend to seize burning sticks and transport them in their beaks or talons, either individually or in small cooperative groups. After dropping the sticks in other areas and setting the ground ablaze, these fire specialists swoop closer and grab grasshoppers and other invertebrates in midair as the prey flee the smoldering vegetation.

“Certain birds are fire followers in that they will take advantage of fires,” Bonta said. They perceive smoke and snatch the flushed-out animals. But a few raptors actively disperse flames on the landscape to obtain food. Their reliance on fire challenges the conventional notion that only human beings can wield it, he said, and it casts light on recent research suggesting birds have higher intelligence than was previously thought.
Yet this fire manipulation could put other birds on the savanna in jeopardy, Bonta said. Since European colonization, he said, cattle ranchers have suppressed fire to protect livestock, including by illegally shooting species resembling firehawks — possibly rarer birds like letter-winged kites (Elanus scriptus), square-tailed kites (Lophoictinia isura) and peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus).
For many Australians, the birds’ use of fire isn’t news. Rangers in northern Australia take these animals’ ability to perpetuate fires into account when managing fuel load in the ecosystem, Bonta said. Modern anthropological records of firehawks distributing flames to capture prey date back to 1963, Bonta said, when a book described raptors snatching brands from indigenous cooking fires and depositing them in grass up to half a kilometer away.
While tales of firehawks have a long history in Aboriginal culture, that knowledge is being lost, he said. “We’re stimulating people to say, ‘Our knowledge is valuable and needs to be rescued and published.’”
This May, he and his collaborators are returning to Australia with binoculars and high-tech cameras to discover more about its firehawks with the help of local land managers who’ll kindle controlled burns and cooking fires to attract them. Bonta intends to gather data on the prevalence of the ranch practice of killing raptors, too. The researchers are also investigating whether people have noticed raptors spreading fire in South America and Africa, and they hope to establish methods for others to study fire foraging.

It's the biggest ever though and the only one of this magnitude.
They're saying that some species have been so severely affected they may never recover and it could be forty years before the rest is back to its previous state if it ever is.

Fondler don't know shit from sticky pudding.

Much of the Native species will be wiped out because of the sustained heat and what regrows is the shit.

The large native trees that have gone take fuking decades to reach maturity they just don't pop back up. A sustained replanting effort will be needed and this will continue indefinitely.

    You are right thou,

left alone without the interference from humans and major bush fires such as this one it will grow back. That's nature innit.

The areas that are well fuked now will be fire free for decades mostly because there will not be significant regrowth in the short term and there will be little under growth to fuel it.

Still a shit load a forest left over for next year though.

It's quiet fuked though, all previous Governments were warned time and time again about this disaster waiting to happen and they all chose to wait shit out before throwing huge amounts of money towards serious fire fighting gear.

Now Australia has been turned into a fuking chimney they step shit up.

    Always the way innit.

The religious fat fuk is taking all the heat but it was the coonts before him who had the power to do something and did not.

    True story that.

Man who lost house in bushfire snags $1m lottery win after 'perfect' change of fortune

A Queensland man whose uninsured family home was destroyed by bushfire late last year has won $1 million in a lottery that will allow him to rebuild.

The winner — who wished to remain anonymous — is from Mount Cotton in Redland, south of Brisbane, but owned a family property in a part of northern New South Wales hit by the fires.

Lauren Cooney from The Lott notified him of the win on Thursday morning and said he was incredibly emotional.

"He told me his family had just lost their home in the bushfires," she said.

"The home wasn't insured, so this prize meant that they would be able to rebuild which initially, they thought they wouldn't be able to," she said.

The man detailed how his family had returned to the property several weeks ago, which was said to be "very sentimental and special to them".

The man held the only division one winning entry to Wednesday night's draw, claiming all of the $1 million prize.

He told Ms Cooney the circumstances surrounding the win were "just perfect".

"He said he couldn't have imagined more impeccable timing which meant that he could use his prize to rebuild their family home," Ms Cooney said.

Australian authorities urged another mass evacuation across the heavily populated southeast on Thursday as a return of hot weather fanned huge bushfires threatening several towns and communities.

Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews urged communities to be on alert ahead of the extreme conditions.

"If you receive instructions to leave, then you must leave," Andrews said in a televised briefing. "That is the only way to guarantee your safety."

Parts of Kangaroo Island, a wildlife-rich tourist spot off the southeast coast where Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday made a plea for foreign tourists not to be deterred by the fires, were again evacuated on Thursday.

"I urge everyone to heed warnings, follow advice, and to head to the east part of the island, which is deemed safe at this point," South Australia Fire Chief Mark Jones said in a separate briefing in Adelaide.

A third of the island has been destroyed.

Twenty-seven people have been killed this fire season, according to the federal government, as the monster fires have scorched through more than 10.3 million hectares (25.5 million acres) of land, an area the size of South Korea.

Thousands have been made homeless and thousands have had to evacuate repeatedly because of the volatility of the fires.

A huge blaze has also now begun threatening Perth, in western Australia, with emergency warnings issued in several suburbs as the fire moved toward them with frightening speed.

A thick smoke cloud hung over most of the city late in the afternoon, while residents in Mardella, Hopeland, Wellard, Casuarina and Oldbury were told to leave their home if they have a safe escape route, and otherwise to stay indoors and shelter in a room with two exits and a water supply.

The fire burnt 1,000 hectares in its first four hours, and authorities warned it is out of control and highly unpredictable.

Also in Western Australia, hopes to get stranded travellers across the only sealed road that connects the state to South Australia were dashed Thursday when the fires blocking the Eyre Highway got worse.

People have been stranded on the Nullabor, on both sides of the state border, trying to get home for several days, relying in part on local truck stops for vital supplies.

Also on Thursday, the Australian Academy of Science released a video summarising the impacts of the crisis on Australia’s native wildlife. It is now believed one billion animals have been killed, and many species lost forever.

New South Wales fire fighters said more than 2,600 homes have been incinerated or badly damaged this fire season, including 1,870 destroyed. On the same day, the state government announced a $1billion (£530,000,000) fund for reconstruction efforts.

The commitment comes on top of more than $200 million already committed by the State, and a $2billion national fund provided by the Federal Government.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state funds would be used for infrastructure, while the Federal relief money would go directly to people.

Mining billionaire Andrew Forrest also pledged $70million (£36,820,000) for fire relief and reconstruction. Mr Forrest did, however, receive some criticism for blaming the majority of the fires on arson, when police and fire authorities in all affected states have made clear that is not the case.

It emerged this week that the Bureau of Meteorology found 2019 was the hottest and driest year ever recorded in Australia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison's problematic handling of the crisis continued on Thursday too, when he said “thankfully we have had no loss of life” on Kangaroo Island while visiting an area where a father and son had been killed by the blaze.

When he was quickly corrected, he said: “Yes two, that's quite right. I was thinking about firefighters firstly.”
'''If you'''re told to leave, you must leave''': mass evacuations as Australia'''s bushfires intensify

    That Morrison's a fucking dick.

The huge problem is that once these fires get their go on they move at warp speed and fook off into territory where the firies and their vehicles can't go so that leaves the planes to deal with them.

Very limited water available in many places so it's a double wammy.

    Same shit every year.

Spare a thought for the volunteers who not so long ago were mainly being kitted out with permanent firies cast off's. Also using second hand trucks and generally being treated like slaves providing free labor.

It's only been the last few years that these guys and bints have been given proper protective gear and proper vehicles.

Left to foot the cost for the volunteers were the employers. They are trying to run a business but when the call come out their staff would bolt out the door to deal with nasty shit. ?

In the cuntry side this was the way shit rolled because there were no Permanent fire fighters so they had to protect their own communities.

The Australian Government are a pack of oxygen stealing fuktards who took advantage of these volunteers simply because they had no other option but to protect themselves.

Only now after this fuking disaster are they talking about paying these coonts who have done it all these years for no finantial reward at all.

    Australia the lucky cuntry ?

Shit yes, thats if you are cashed up and not a volunteer fire fighter.

    Look Fondler,

That Cujo must be the worst cock sucker on this forum. Fuking pathetic little mommies boy who Tefles in Slope head land for pennies and is one ugly little piss ant so i agree with you on that point.

Regards your other comment it's uninformed fookin bolliks.

Kuntry fukers in Australia must provide for themselves and contributing to the Volunteer fire service is looked upon as a right of passage and a worthy respectable way to help the community.

Also it's a very sociable pass time , team building and getting to know who is shagging who and who is counting.

You are correct when you say no one is forcing them but it's really not a relevent comment.

We now have a problem in Arsetralia where we have a shortage of volunteer fire fighters and i suspect that maybe because they are simply sick and tired of putting their life on the line and getting zero money for it.

Can't blame them really so it's like this.

Insure the fuck out of everything and let it burn baby burn.

Further more ya gota question the system when a permanent fire fighter pulls 100 K per year and the fuking Government cannot come to the party and pay Volunteers at least for the hours they put in on the fire ground.

Remember that these fukers out in the communities must deal with road accidents as well as chemical spills and general fire fighting.

And in general every road accident they attend is fooking ugly as sin because of the high speeds involved.

They are not as highly trained as a permanent fire fighter but in most cases perform the same work.

So in conclusion Arsetralia has been getting a free kick on the back of these fukos and the time is now for some pay back.

Royal Comission has been called and the time is kumin.

So what your sayin then is the voluntary part of it is not compulsory there for they are not forced the join.

Thanks for confirming and reinforcing my point.
