39 bodies found in lorry container in Essex

Breaking News... it takes something big to knock Brexit from the top of the news in the UK just now...

39 bodies found in lorry container in Essex

The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, Essex Police said.

The force said the lorry came from Bulgaria and entered the country via Holyhead on Saturday.

Ch Supt Andrew Mariner said officers were trying to indentify victims but anticipated a "lengthy process".

Tragic for sure, triggers hand wringing in Parliament, we must do more blah blah, candles and flowers already ordered, next we will be roused to celebrate as a couple of small fry are arrested before business as usual.

Can't see how they will make a murder charge stick though. Manslaughter certainly. For murder there has to be intent.

Sad and sorry desperation of people wanting a better life in Brexit Britain.

Wouldn't surprise me if the dead were destined for Britians many canabis factories.

The lorry driver was probably getting 5 grand a person!
Must have been hellish suffocating conditions in that container.

Of course everyone who reads UK news knows about the ganja business.

You don't have to see bonfires to get news anymore.

It's just not generally a great idea to jump to conclusions.

Didn't they teach you that at schoo...oh.

THIRTY-nine migrants found dead in the back of a lorry in Essex were Chinese nationals and included eight women.

Dad-to-be Maurice 'Mo' Robinson, 25, is still being quizzed on suspicion of murder after he picked the trailer packed with bodies up from Purfleet in Essex yesterday.

Chinese paper says Britain must accept responsibility for truck deaths

    BEIJING (Reuters) -

Britain and other European countries must accept some responsibility for the deaths of 39 people, believed to be Chinese nationals, found dead in a refrigerated truck near London, the state-backed Global Times said on Friday.

Police officers are seen at the scene where bodies were discovered in a lorry container, in Grays, Essex, Britain October 24, 2019. REUTERS/Simon Dawson
Paramedics and police found the bodies of 31 men and eight women on Wednesday on an industrial estate at Grays in Essex, about 20 miles (30 km) east of the British capital.

For years, illegal immigrants have stowed away in trucks while attempting to reach Britain, often from the European mainland. In 2000, 58 Chinese were found dead in a tomato truck at the port of Dover.

At the moment it was impossible to say how much responsibility the dead should bear for the tragedy, the widely-read Chinese newspaper said in an editorial.

“But such a serious humanitarian disaster has occurred under the eyes of the British and Europeans,” it said. “It is clear that Britain and relevant European countries have not fulfilled their responsibility to protect these people from such a death.”

Even if found to have been smuggled into the country, the victims’ death was not their fault, added the paper, which is published by the ruling Communist Party’s official People’s Daily.

“We hope that Britain and European countries will put into effect their various commitments to human rights and make due efforts for Chinese people to be free from abuse and sudden death.”

Britain appears not to have learned its lesson from the Dover incident two decades ago, it added.

“Imagine how thoroughly European countries would take measures if dozens of Europeans were collectively tragically killed in some way,” the paper said.

“Could the British and European people ask themselves why they have not been able to avoid a similar tragedy...Did they take all the serious remedial action that they could have?”

China has not formally confirmed the victims are citizens.

On Friday, the Chinese embassy in London said it had sent a team to Essex that met police.

“The British police said they are verifying the identity of the deceased, and at present are unable to be certain that they are Chinese nationals,” the embassy said.

^ Agree with wit Harry here.

So the final destination of illegal immigrants must be partly responsible for nationals from other countries that want to risk their lives by paying criminals to transport them through continents for the sole purpose of enrichment?

Essex lorry deaths: Two held on suspicion of manslaughter

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of the manslaughter of 39 people found dead in a refrigerated lorry in Essex.

The man and woman, both 38, from Warrington, Cheshire, were also held on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic.

The BBC has spoken to the families of three Vietnamese people who are worried their relatives may have been in the trailer.

The family of one woman say she sent a text saying she could not breathe.

They say Pham Tra My, 26, sent the message on Tuesday night and they have not been able to contact her since. They said they had paid £30,000 for her to be smuggled to Britain.

Two other families have also been in touch with the BBC. They are relatives of a 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.

The 19-year-old's brother said she called him early on Tuesday to say she was getting in to a container and was turning off her phone to avoid detection.

There has been no word from her since, he said, but a people smuggler had returned money to the family.

Relatives of the 26-year-old - with whom she was said to be travelling - also received money back, according to the younger woman's brother.

Surely it's the several countries they passed through to reach GB that should be reviewing their anti-human trafficking efforts, if any.

And probably China, considering that's where they escaped from.

My journey abroad hasn't succeeded. I'm dying, I can't breathe

Pham Thi Tra My sent a farewell message to her mother

A heartbreaking text message from a young Vietnamese woman to her mother, saying "I love you so much, I'm dying because I can't breathe".

The messages were released as her family grew increasingly concerned she was one of the 39 migrants who perished in the back of a truck.

It was sent by Pham Thi Tra My (26) to a friend, to allow what is believed to be a final farewell to her mother.
The message, sent from an account named "daughter", was received in Vietnam at 4.28am Wednesday morning, 10.28pm UK time, just four hours before the alarm was raised in Essex, when the bodies were found within the truck's refrigeration unit.
"I'm sorry mum. My journey abroad hasn't succeeded," the text read.
"Mum, I love you so much! I'm dying because I can't breathe... I'm from Nghen, Can Loc, Ha Tinh, Vietnam... I am sorry mum."
The account has not been accessed by Ms Tra My since Wednesday, adding to the concern she is among the dead.

It has also emerged two more Vietnamese migrants are feared dead - a 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.
The text message highlights the torturous moments the migrants will have suffered as they waited for death in the back of the truck in transit from Belgium to the UK.
Ms Tra My's brother Pham Ngoc Tuan told the BBC her journey began on October 3. She had instructed her family not to contact her as "the organisers" did not allow her to receive calls.
"My sister went missing on October 23 on the way from Vietnam to the UK and we couldn't contact her," he said.
"We are concerned she may be in that trailer."

    Screenshot
British police had said the 39 victims were all believed to be Chinese nationals.
"Pham Thi Tra My went to China and planned to go to England via France, a contact with her family told me," Hoa Nghiem, from Human Rights Space, a civic network based in Vietnam, said.
Mr Nghiem published a screenshot of Ms Tra My's text message which indicated it was sent at 4.28am on Wednesday Vietnam time (9.28pm GMT Tuesday).
The bodies were found in the truck container at an industrial estate near London at 1.40am (12.40am GMT) British time.
The container had arrived in Britain about an hour-and-a-half earlier after being shipped from Zeebrugge.

Someone pls explain how open borders a la Schengen, on the back of virtually open international borders as part of loose immigration policies could possibly lead to greater rather than notional, or wishful security. Wish I were a politician, then so much would start to make sense.
