The sensible thing to do is to ease the sanctions and reduce the risk of an escalation. Dangle a carrot instead of using a stick.

Your "punch on the nose" is the least sensible option. It is the path taken by the weak minded who have little understanding.
Clearly you haven't got a fucking clue how these idiots work.

A limited strategic response is by far the best solution. Doing nothing will make the mad mullahs believe they can get away with it and perhaps do more or worse.

If they think they are going to take a commensurate loss every time they do damage, they will stop doing it.

They should be treated like a child having a tantrum, because that's what they are: Mentally underdeveloped hotheads.

And that's also the main reason for keeping them away from nukes. They would use them, they're fucking retarded.

And the Houthis are so angry that nobody blame them, and all the cream goes to Iran.

Why not to impose sanctions on Yemeni Houthis? It would teach them...

Was the question too difficult for you?

I was only seeking clarification as it had potential to be the single most dumb thing I'd read yesterday so wanted to make sure it was ranked accordingly. If not #1 it still would've been Top Three, easy.

You can’t label people as ‘victims’ anymore because they’ll feel victimised according to the PC police.

They are now ‘injured persons’ or ‘injured parties’ though I don’t know if they’ll be doing much partying with a missile jammed into them.

Well, that's a very simple but true statement. But with some people here on this forum (Trolls in pink underwear) who have "NO OPINION" at all, it might be a bit too complicated.

Iran biggest and last mistake would be to confront Israel directly. The "WEST" (incl. Russia) would never allow it and put those mentaly underdeveloped hotheads in their place.

    Putin :
“Citizens of Russia and Israel are connected by ties of family, kinship and friendship. This is a real network, a common family, I say without exaggeration. Israel has almost 2 million Russian-speaking citizens. We consider Israel a Russian-speaking state,” he said.
There you have it. Iran should start taking care of it own people and give up its dream of destroying Israel.
I think Iran is the only country that treats its people worse then the enemy

Some people still think Iran is like the lovely, friendly country it was under the Shah, when the Shi'a nutters had a foot on their necks.

Now those nice people are the minority, and it's run by the nutters.

France says Houthi claim of Saudi attack lacks credibility

PARIS (Reuters) - France on Thursday appeared to dismiss claims by Yemeni Houthi rebels that they were behind an attack on Saudi oil facilities, and said Paris would renew efforts to defuse tensions between the U.S. and Iran at next week’s U.N. General Assembly.

France has been scrambling with its European partners to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran for months, but last weekend’s attack has jeopardized those efforts, diplomats have said.

The Trump administration and Saudi Arabia have pointed the finger at Iran for the Sept. 14 raids, which hit the world’s biggest crude oil processing facility and initially knocked out half of Saudi output.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for the attack. Iran, which supports the Houthi group, has denied any involvement in the attacks.

“The Houthis ... announced that they launched this attack. That lacks credibility,” French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, told C News television, adding that at this stage Paris would not draw conclusions that Iran was behind it.

“There is an international investigation, let’s wait for its results. I don’t have a specific opinion before these results.”

He said the Saudi investigation would be fast.

France’s Armed Forces Ministry spokeswoman said seven of its experts in explosives, surface-to-air defenses and missile trajectory had been sent to Saudi Arabia to help make an independent assessment of the attack.

France, which has a naval base in neighboring Abu Dhabi, had the Jean Bart warship operating in the area at the time of the attack.

“It is an act of war. When missiles hit another country it is an act of war, but we have to go back to the principle of de-escalation,” Le Drian said.

He said France would continue its efforts to defuse the crisis at next week’s U.N. General Assembly. French President Emmanuel Macron was scheduled to meet Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Trump, he said. Iran has said the Iranian leader has yet to receive a visa for the trip.

“Iran must return (fully) to the nuclear deal. It is a requirement. It needs the economic benefits of the accord, but we must also discuss the rest,” Le Drian said, referring to regional security.

Clearly you are one of those brexit supporters and an admirer of Trump. Escalating tensions in an area that supply's the world's fuel is just a little on the risky side. Far better to de-escalate the tension over tea. After all the Saudis have been happily committing acts of war against its neighbour Yemen for four years.

You would never make a diplomat Harry...

So you don't think blowing up the equipment that supplies it is a risk?

Well Harry, it was you who wanted the retaliatory strike against an Iranian oilfield. Good to see you have worked out the flaw in that idea.

Let me say it again: A strategic, surgical strike on one of their oil installations - to educate the Iranians that further unprovoked attacks will not go unpunished - is by far the most effective response.

N.B. This will not affect global oil supply except to the chinkies who are bypassing sanctions, and they can go and fuck themselves.

Why not just shoot down a few more Iranian airliners ?
The USS Vincennes has been decommissioned but the officers who were commended might still be about.
There’s nothing better than screaming women and children plunging to their deaths to make a man behave himself.

Or let the Saudis do the job - the West has sold them a lot of popguns over the years and it’s kinda like buying a dog and doing the barking yourself if America gets in first.

Why do you think so many missiles and drones got through in the first place?

You really must be a moron if you think that was intentional. The Iranians deliberately changed the data signal that that plane transmitted. If you are not aware of that then you are a fucking moron.

Where did you get that lie? This is same as:
IS fighters hid among Afghan pine nut harvesters during U.S. drone strike: U.S. official
The jet was hit while flying over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, along the flight's usual route, shortly after departing Bandar Abbas International Airport, the flight's stopover location. Vincennes had entered Iranian territory
the cruiser negligently shot down the aircraft, which was transmitting IFF squawks in Mode III, a signal that identified it as a civilian aircraft, and not Mode II as used by Iranian military aircraft.[9][10]

I guess Iran can hypothetically get oil and gas to China via Russia and Kazakhstan and maybe via Pakistan and India.
Russia is a funny one, as they're not exactly matey with China, are they?
Really the USA should be giving Kazakhstan incentives to back away from facilitating China undermining sanctions.

Iran is quite happily sending oil to China in Chinese-flagged tankers.

The seppos seem reluctant to take one, probably because they are getting their arses kicked in a trade war.

It's not that hard to blockade the gulf of Hormuz, which seems the least destructive option.
I've been through there, and you can see both sides (though admittedly ships tend to stay closer to the UAE-Omani bits.

Not so sure about the trade war bit, I mean China is so fucked with debt and unproductive labour, they hold like $3Tn of US debt, and that's only a fraction of the debt China's got to avoid defaulting on. They can't have it all their own way, fucking up HK and trying to dump goods on the US and elsewhere, it's not gonna work if they won't open up to more free trade. It's a great game, and the Chi know that the west wants access to China's financial system, and to grab leverage on them through that. Meanwhile China has to send its unproductive labour out around the world to save having to deal with them at home.
All those loans to dodgy regimes, they aren't paying in money, but in resources and sovereignty, but when they default, what then?
If the US blocks China's access to oil from Iran, Venezuela, Angola, etc... what are the Chinese gonna do about it? I don't see what levers they have; they can't project meaningful naval power; all they have is money to throw at problems, and that isn't always enough.

Well it isn't really a straight loan. It's conditional, and normally well above market rates, and it has to be spent with Chinese companies so it goes straight back.

Then, when it can't be repaid, they take things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magamp...Rajapaksa_Port

    It's called "Debt diplomacy".

They'll just buy it from the Gulf at market rates and the oil price will go up - and the gas price in the US will go up too, and voters will grumble...

It’s quite simple - Iranians are arseholes who won’t let women watch football games and who want nukes and want Israel destroyed.
Saudis are arseholes who run a medieval police state.
Let them be arseholes and sort it out themselves.
The West is idiotic for being dependent on arseholes that ‘need’ controlling.
China meantime will happily let any arsehole do whatever they want as long as China gets what China wants and can’t do much about it anyway. Smart.

The problem with the surgical strike option is that that’s a logical response for logical people to interpret.
The local arseholes tend to marry their cousins so they’re not the best thinkers.

Well with a third of the world's oil at stake, would you be happy with petrol prices tripling (and everything else rocketing in price)?

And the "West" likes to control so it's a win-win for both sides.

Ditto the "west". So long as friends do it or it's in the west's interest, it's OK. Anybody else and it's wrong.

That dependence is lessening, but it's going to take time.

If you have an instant solution I'm sure the 'idiots' would be all ears.
