Climate saving by sailing instead of flying

Climate campaigner Greta prepares to sail to the U.S. on boat with no toilet

LONDON (Reuters) - Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg will set sail for New York on Wednesday, crossing the Atlantic in a racing yacht with no shower or toilet to join protests in the United States and take part in a United Nations summit.

To avoid traveling by air, Thunberg is making her trans-Atlantic trip on board the 60-ft yacht, the Malizia II, fitted with solar panels and underwater turbines that produce electricity onboard, with the aim of making the journey zero-carbon.

“I might feel a bit seasick and it’s not going to be comfortable but that I can live with,” Thunberg told BBC TV in Plymouth, southwest England, from where she is due to leave on Wednesday afternoon.

“If it’s really hard then I just have to think it’s only for two weeks then I can go back to as usual,” said the 16-year-old who will be accompanied by her father, Svante, and a cameraman on the journey.

Earlier this month, the boat’s skipper told Reuters the teenage activist, who has become a figurehead for young environmental protesters, faced a challenging voyage on board the yacht which is designed for speed rather than luxury.

There are no showers or toilets - those on board have to use a blue bucket.

“Greta taking on this challenge of sailing across on a race boat with zero comfort really shows her commitment to the cause and how far she’s willing to push herself,” skipper Boris Herrmann told Reuters.

He said they will try to make the journey as smooth as possible.

“By stopping flying you not only reduce your own carbon footprint but also that sends a signal to other people around you that the climate crisis is a real thing,” Thunberg said.

When she arrives, she will join the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York in September and the COP 25 climate change conference in Santiago, Chile in December.

“Me speaking to the U.N. is not going to change the situation but if that can help to create awareness ... then I think that together we can try to ... make a change,” Thunberg said on a visit to a German anti-coal protest camp on Friday.

Greta Thunberg sets sail for NYC on zero-emissions racing yacht

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg sets sail on Wednesday for New York, heading for a UN summit on a zero-emissions yacht skippered by a member of Monaco's ruling family.

The 16-year-old Swede, whose school strikes have inspired children across the world to protest against global warming, refuses to fly because of the carbon emissions caused by planes. But she has been offered a lift on the Malizia II racing yacht, along with her father Svante and a filmmaker to document the journey, that will allow her to attend the UN talks in September with a clear conscience.

The 60-foot (18-metre) boat is skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, vice president of the Monaco Yacht Club and a member of the principality's ruling family, and German round-the-world sailor Boris Herrmann.

The journey takes about two weeks -- the yacht can travel at speeds of around 35 knots (70 kilometres an hour) but will be heading into the wind for much of the time so will be slower, and the captain wants a smooth ride.

"The objective is to arrive safe and sound in New York," Herrmann told AFP as he made final preparations in the English port of Plymouth.

Thunberg has become a figurehead for climate action with her stark warnings of catastrophe if the world does not act now to cut carbon emissions and curb global warming.

Speaking to AFP before she set sail, the activist said: "Of course there are many people who don't understand and accept the science. I will just have to do what I have always done -- ignore them and just tell the science as it is."

The yacht is made for racing, with foils, or wings, that lift it out of the water for a faster and smoother ride. Inside it is sparse, fitted with high-tech navigation equipment, an on-board ocean laboratory to monitor CO2 levels in the water, and four bunks -- Herrmann and Casiraghi will share one, sleeping in turns.

The toilet is a blue plastic bucket, complete with a biodegradable bag that can be thrown overboard, and meals will be freeze-dried packets of vegan food mixed with water heated on a tiny gas stove. But state-of-the-art solar panels adorn the yacht's deck and sides while there are two hydro-generators, which together provide all the electricity they need on board.

Thunberg has never sailed before this week, and got seasick on their first journey out of Plymouth on Monday, but said she was looking forward to the adventure.

The teenager, who has spent hours on trains across Europe to spread her message, was relaxed about the basic conditions.

"You can't really ask for that much if you get to sail across the Atlantic for free," she said, adding: "I am grateful for what I have."

She could book a passage on a cargo/container ship going to the US. As the ship is already going, the addition of her will not add to any carbon footprint nonsense. She just hasn't thought outside the loony stuff.

^It would not be so spectacular and news worthy as to sail with a:
Pierre Casiraghi, vice president of the Monaco Yacht Club and a member of the principality's ruling family,
the family well known for their environment-saving life...

The poor little pixie really needs to be taken into care so that her parents can stop exploiting her for financial gain and all the brainwashing they have subjected her to that she thinks the world will end soon. Bsnub probably hangs on her every word though.

Would be a good fishing trip if she's sea sick all the way.

I hope they're not proposing all to follow suit. That would pollute the sea a whole lot more...

Greta Thunberg crew will fly to US to bring back 'zero-carbon' yacht

Climate saving by sailing instead of flying-0_318a6be8-bc8f-4c17-a545-0b17d5e2718e-jpg

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg's high-profile 'zero carbon' transatlantic crossing from Plymouth to the USA will leave a carbon footprint after all - because a crew will have to FLY to New York to bring her boat back, it is claimed.

Crowds applauded the 16-year when she set sail from Plymouth on August 14, after saying she wanted to get to New York without using planes or cruise ships which emit greenhouse gases, to join climate change protests in the US and take part in a United Nations summit.

However those cheers have turned to jeers in some quarters, after reports in German newspapers that two people will have to jet out to America to return the ship to Europe.

Holly Cova, a spokesperson for the yacht's owner Team Malizia, said: “We only have one boat, so they cannot easily sail over to meet them.”
She said the team recognises it’s “an imperfect solution” but believes offsetting the emissions by funding carbon-reducing projects elsewhere “is better than doing nothing.”

Greta Thunberg addresses Asperger's diagnosis, says being different is a 'superpower'

Climate saving by sailing instead of flying-11459634-3x2-700x467-jpg

Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg has hit out at critics in an online post, describing her Asperger's diagnosis as a "superpower" that she has never tried to "hide behind".

    Key points:

    • Greta Thunberg drew criticism after refusing to fly to the UN's climate summit because of the carbon cost of plane travel
    • The teen climate activist said she was public about her Asperger's diagnosis to change people's preconceptions
    • She has previously hit back at Australian columnist Andrew Bolt for labelling her the "deeply disturbed messiah" of the global warming movement

At least she tried to do something about her passion, unlike many others who may be all talk but no action. What a brave chick.

According to a report by the New Climate Economy, if we make the right choices over the next 2-3 years we could unlock benefits worth $26 trillion from here to 2030, create 65 million new low-carbon jobs
