Greta Thunberg crew will fly to US to bring back 'zero-carbon' yacht
Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg's high-profile 'zero carbon' transatlantic crossing from Plymouth to the USA will leave a carbon footprint after all - because a crew will have to FLY to New York to bring her boat back, it is claimed.
Crowds applauded the 16-year when she set sail from Plymouth on August 14, after saying she wanted to get to New York without using planes or cruise ships which emit greenhouse gases, to join climate change protests in the US and take part in a United Nations summit.
However those cheers have turned to jeers in some quarters, after reports in German newspapers that two people will have to jet out to America to return the ship to Europe.
Holly Cova, a spokesperson for the yacht's owner Team Malizia, said: “We only have one boat, so they cannot easily sail over to meet them.”
She said the team recognises it’s “an imperfect solution” but believes offsetting the emissions by funding carbon-reducing projects elsewhere “is better than doing nothing.”
