Thread: Southern California hit by 7.1-magnitude earthquake

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake has hit southern California, less than two days after another strong tremor in the state.


It hit at 8.19pm local time 11 miles from Ridgecrest in the Mojave Desert, the site of Thursday's 6.4-magnitude quake.




It was also felt in Las Vegas and parts of Mexico, while offices in downtown Los Angeles shook for around 30 seconds.


The earthquake is the strongest to hit the region in 20 years, with seismologists giving it an early rating of 6.9 to 7.1 on the Richter scale.


San Bernardino County Fire Department reported damage to buildings, including homes shifting, foundations cracking and walls coming down.

My daughter who is lives in Santa Monica said she felt both but it was no big deal. She is about 150 K from the epicenter. Said it was rolling rather than shaking and nothing fell off of shelves or anything. Surprised it did not shock her more as these were her first two.

2 sons living in La Verne said it rolled pretty good there. Closer than Santa Monica so to be expected.

I was in Naples when the 1980 earthquake hit. A 6.9 magnitude quake. Killed close to 3,000 and displaced about a quarter million.

Majority of the deaths and damage based on “old” architecture. Buildings and housing greater than a hundred years old and made of magic mud (adobe).

That being said – it is mind boggling to watch skyscrapers dancing and swaying.

Don’t recall how far from the epicenter I was, nor how long it officially lasted, probably only a minute or so, but, time does get suspended during the event and it seemed to last for minutes on end. Remember saying to my friends I hope the power lines don’t fall, then, of course moving away from the power lines. Also remember neighbors yelling, crying out, kneeling and praying in the streets.

This all followed by massive traffic jams as folks fled and went to check on relatives.

Massive relief efforts started and lasted for many months/years. The displaced relocated to tent cities.

A 7.1 quake is not a small tremblor.
