Instagram and Facebook Ban Far-Right Extremists

In an effort to contain misinformation and extremism that have spread across the platforms, Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, have banned several prominent right-wing extremists including Alex Jones, Infowars, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson, Laura Loomer, and Paul Nehlen under their policies against dangerous individuals and organizations. They also banned Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has repeatedly made anti-semitic statements.

They are a private company and can ban whatever they want. However, this sort of thing is a very slippery slope. The definition of "Far-Right Extremists" is subjective and in the US it is not a crime to post far right, left or moderate views on social media.

Oh, and what about Far Left Wing Extremists? Need to get those bastards off social media as well.

Facebook should tell those pushing them to censor to fuck off!

Should this catch on across the industry, wtf will Trump use to communicate his right wing agenda.

The headline is misleading, as they also banned Louis Farrakhan from the Nation of Islam. Far right and far left meet under the same aluminum foil tent.

Do they promote death and destruction or peddle harmful lies?

So you'd support a Brides of ISIS page recruiting girls to go to Syria, and a Death To Infidels page, that shows how to make suicide vests and IEDs?
In my mind, the Brides of ISIS should (unfortunately) be left alone as long as it sticks to just calling on girls above age of consent to get married, but the other page should indeed be taken down.

I don't think the free speech vs hate speech debate is complicated. If it promotes death or destruction based on race, sexuality etc, it's plainly hate speech. One may stand up and proclaim "I hate gays", but not "Lets kill all the Muslims". One can stand up and shout "The holocaust never happened" or "the Earth is flat", but not "President Obama is selling children from a pizza shop" because the former are ideas but the latter is a deliberate lie designed to impugn and has the capacity to incite violent retaliation.

They would be classed as right wing extremists.

Point. At first I would lump them in with flat earthers, but you're right, it's a harmful message.

What are some of those far left wing extremist websites?

The difference is that the right wing extremists are targeting ethnic groups or religion. (Farrakhan is an anti-Semite.)

In the case of Nutter Jones, he’s having his followers harass people who have been struck by unimaginable tragedy.

I am continuing to monitor the censorship of AMERICAN CITIZENS on social media platforms. This is the United States of America — and we have what’s known as FREEDOM OF SPEECH! We are monitoring and watching, closely!!

The notion that left wingers do not promote and carry out violent action is myth.
They have and will continue to do so but that is not the issue here.

It is simply a restriction of free speech. This is particularily an issue on social media for couple of reasons. First no one is forced to look at a particular site and who gets to define and censor those things deemed far right?

Hell everyone knows TD is a far left social media site.

Leave social media free to express opinions even though as in my case I find some personally objectionable.

There's no such thing as 'Freedom of Speech' on social media.

They are all owned and driven by companies and to use them you need to agree to and abide by their Terms of Service.

Agree but one can always find a site where they are free to speak and promote their opinions.

the notion that left wing extremists are as numerous and dangerous as right wing extremists is an even larger myth.

Agree. However, hopefully Mark will make sure banning and censorship apply equally.

FWIW, i was listening to a podcast the other day with roger mcnamee (VC and former zuckerberg mentor) and he posited that social media platforms like facebook and instagram are deliberately manipulated to incite fear, jealousy and hostility in their users... the reason being is that from these emotions marketers and advertisers are able to best determine what you really want to buy.

    it's insidious.

Sounds plausible. I'm sure the platforms were not designed to be such but they go where the money is. They'r not dumb.

Correct me if I'm under a misaprehension, but "social media" is different from online forums, albeit the forum is "social".

Paul Joseph Watson is anti-left - he is in no way far-right
Milo Yiannopoulos is not far right either - but he has done some pretty dumb things in his attempts to seek attention

The label 'far right' is becoming meaningless. It basically now covers anyone that's able to dissemble leftist talking points. The left don't like debate - so they silence the opposition.
